January 22, 2004 Update

1. Track & Field Summit - The MHSAA will be hosting a track & field summit in Winnipeg this Tuesday January 27th. The Purpose of this summit will be to review high school track & field in the province, qualifications for provincials, etc. Information is available on the MHSAA website. Cost is $10.00 per person and lunch will be provided. It is not too late to register. Contact Carey Lasuik at the MHSAA office for further information.

2. Champions - The next Champions cross-mentoring program will be held in Winnipeg on February 6th & 7th. This program provides a great opportunity for high school student leaders to speak to grade 5 classes about drugs and alcohol, peer pressure, making the right choices etc. Information and registration forms are available on the MHSAA website. For further information contact Ron Paseshnik at 925-5643.

3. CNIB - The Canadian National Institute for the Blind has a calendar fundraiser. The calendars sell for $30.00 and schools would keep $7.50 per calendar sold. There are a number of daily and monthly prizes. It is an excellent fundraiser and a great way to support the CNIB. Contact Gord Smith at 1-800-552-4893 or 774-5421.

4. Floorball - The dates for the long awaited high school floorball tournament have now been released. This tournament will be held on April 16th & 17th at Grant Park High School in Winnipeg. We are hoping to make it a boys' and a girls' tournament. Please contact Morris at 925-5641 or morris@mhsaa.mb.ca to signify if your school would be interested. There will be a nominal entry fee, however all participants will receive a t-shirt and pizza. There is still time to organize a clinic for your school. Contact Brian at 925-5643 or Morris at 925-5641to book a date.

5. Annual General Meeting - The MHSAA Annual General Meeting will be held in Portage La Prairie on June 20th - 22nd. Plan now to attend. This is a great opportunity to become involved with the MHSAA legislative process and at the same time meet with your peers from across the province. You may also think about running for the board of directors. Positions up for nomination include: 2 urban representatives and 2 rural representatives. For further information, contact Morris Glimcher at 925-5641 or morris@mhsaa.mb.ca.

6. Updates - All Updates will now be stored on the website. Minutes from past meetings are also on the website for your reference, as is the constitution and other areas of the handbook. Please refer to them.

7. School Logos - Just a reminder, if you have not already done so, please submit your school logo so that it can be posted on the MHSAA website. This is a great opportunity to have all logos visible, and schools use them for tournaments.

8. Email Addresses - Please ensure that all email addresses from your school have been accurately entered onto your school information sheet. Also, this year, we have added a place for guidance councilors' email address as well, and we will send scholarship information to them. Please ensure that all information is updated including school website etc.

9. Provincial Baseball - This year's baseball championships will be on June 11th & 12th. Gerry Falk from Carman Collegiate will be convening this championship. Baseball will be recognized as a sanctioned MHSAA Championship in the 2004-2005 school year.
