MHSAA Update

May 27, 2010

Number 7

1.       Track and Field Entries – there seems to be a bit of confusion in regards to qualifying for the Milk Provincial Track and Field Championships. The qualification is stated on page 62 and 63 of the handbook, “athletes who did not attain the standard at their zone meet, but have attained the standard at another meet recognized and sanctioned by the MHSAA may participate in the Provincials providing the MHSAA is notified by Monday noon June 7th  A reminder, that the athlete must have competed in that specific event at their zone meet, and the school must provide proof of obtaining standard at a MHSAA meet.

Entry due to injury – an athlete may request approval of an entry without competing at the zone meet providing she or he meets the following requirements.

·         Written request from the coach or principal

·         Medical certificate

·         Proof of obtaining standard after April 15th

This written request must be received by the Assistant Executive Director by Monday June 7th noon.

These are the only cases that will be considered.  We have had requests from schools asking if athletes can run in events that they did not run at their zone event, to try and qualify, and this is not permitted.  The Key is the athlete must have participated in that event at their zone meet, except in case of injury.

2.       Volleyball On the Road – The Manitoba Volleyball Association will once again be featuring Volleyball on the Road for Rural Schools.  In order to book a clinic for your School or Area this summer contact Mitch Davidson of the MVA at 925-5784 or Daryl Ford at 827-2229.

3.       Beach Volleyball – The Annual Nikki Redekopp Beach Volleyball Tournament will be held at the Melrose Community Center on Saturday June 19, cost is $25.00 Per Player which includes a T-shirt.  For further information contact 925-5787 or go www.manitobavolleyball.com.

4.       Badminton – The Manitoba Badminton Association will be running Yonex Summer Badminton Camps throughout the summer.  For further information contact www.badminton.mb.ca  or 925-5679.

5.       Annual Meeting – The Agenda, Notice of Motions and registration form for this year’s annual meeting to be held June 20th, 21st, and 22nd at Canad Inns in Portage la Prairie are posted on the MHSAA Website.  This will be a very interesting meeting and there will be some very excellent professional development and discussion groups taking place.  Plan now to attend.  Go to www.mhsaa.ca and look under Current Items on the right hand side of the page.

6.       Contact Information – Please look at the back of the MHSAA Handbook, in the Yellow Pages and advise the MHSAA office at info@mhsaa.ca of any changes or corrections that might need to be made for your school.  Also if you know of change in staffing at your school, whether they be Phys Ed teachers or coaches coming or going or new administrators please contact us as well as we would like to include this in the September Issue of The Pacer.

7.       Attention All Web Savy Enthusiasts – The MHSAA is looking at developing a web page that Provincial Championship Hosts could use.  The page would have a standard look and would have options that the host could utilize.  This Website would make it easier for schools hosting Provincial Championships in that they would not have to design a website, and it would also make it easier in that the MHSAA Office would be able to develop templates and assist in managing it. We are looking for volunteers (perhaps honorariums involved) to help us develop a hosting website.  Please contact Morris at morris@mhsaa.ca  or 204-925-5641 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              204-925-5641      end_of_the_skype_highlighting to express your interest and to ask for further information.

8.       Urban Student Representative – The MHSAA is still looking for an Urban Student Representative to sit on the Board of Directors.  They would be required to sit in on four meetings a year plus participate at Provincial Championships and some committee work.  We are looking for a student who is entering grade 11 next year who would be prepared to commit for two years, further information is available from Morris at morris@mhsaa.ca.

9.       High School Sports Hall of Fame -Nominate a deserving athlete, team or builder to the Manitoba High School Sports Hall of Fame.  Athletes must have played high school sports, and then gone on in that high school sport to National or International prominence.  Teams that have had a great season or a number of championships are eligible as are builders.  In order to nominate, send a letter to mhsaa@mhsaa.ca
