MHSAA Update


April 13, 2009

  1. We have moved -  MHSAA is now located on the second floor of 200 Main Street in room 210, and our new fax number is 204- 925-5792.
  1. Congratulations to Doran Reid, who has been appointed Athletic Director at the University of Winnipeg.  Doran has coached the girl’s basketball team at Selkirk for a number of years and has been the assistant AD for the last several years.  All the best to Kirby Schepp, of Sturgeon Heights, who was appointed as the University of Manitoba Bisons head Basketball Coach.  Kirby’s teams have been very competitive at the Varsity Boys level and most recently appeared at the “AAAA” Championship Final.
  1. Annual Meeting  2009 Annual General Meeting - The MHSAA Annual meeting will take place June 14-16, at the Canad Inn -Portage La Prairie.  Plan now to attend.  The registration form has been posted on the website, http://www.mhsaa.mb.ca/pages/forms.php.
  1. Positions open for MHSAA Board of Directors- start thinking about running for a position on the MHSAA Board.  Open positions include President, Urban rep,  and a rural rep.  Contact Morris at morris@mhsaa.ca if you would like further information
  1. Home Run Sports has moved and the new location is now open.  They are located at at the corner of Bishop Grandin & De La Seigneurie Blvd between St Anne's Road and Lagimodiere Boulevard.
  1.  2010 "AAAA" Hockey Provincials - We do not currently have a host for the 2010 Provincial High School Hockey Championship on March 12, 13 & 15, 2010.  If your school is interested please contact Morris at 925-5641 or morris@mhsaa.ca.  Remember, the host school gets an automatic berth.
  1. Volunteer Recognition - The MHSAA is accepting nominations for the Jostens Zone Volunteer of the Award and MHSAA Certificates of Recognition.    These awards are presented annually in June.  If you know of someone deserving, contact Morris at morris@mhsaa.ca
  2. Cross Country Running Championships -  If anyone is interested in hosting the 2009 Cross Country Running Championships this wonderful, fun, fulfilling, spectacular, life changing, exciting championship on Thursday, October 8 in October, please contact Carey at 925-5642.  (If we cannot find a host, these championships may not take place)
  1. Basketball Manitoba is pleased to launch a new initiative aimed to attract more young people into becoming a new basketball referee or coach. The 'Be a Coach / Be a Ref' promotion is targeting young adults in the 18-25 age range to continue with the sport this April in a different capacity. These are free to coaches and referees for people this April to make basketball a 'sport for life'.   1. Athletics Manitoba is hosting a Track and Field Coaches Clinic on Friday,
    April 17th at the U of M. Cost $40.  It will be very informative for school
    coaches.  Topics including strength training, injury prevention and a
    variety of event specific practical sessions.  For more information, contact

  1. Track and Field Hurdles - Neepawa Collegiate is looking for some new or slightly used   If any schools have hurdles that they are no longer using and would be willing to sell or donate please contact Bryce Koscielny @ NACI at 476-3305 or email brycekoscielny@gmail.com
  1. The MHSAA is now accepting applications for the Easton "Unsung Hero" Award - The Easton "Unsung Hero" Award is to be given to a hockey player who has been judged by his teammates and coaches as the "unsung hero" of the team.  This person may not have the best stats, but is a leader and contributor to the success of the team.  The winner will receive a pair of skates from Easton.  The nominations can be by letter from the coach outlining that persons leadership skills and why they are the 'unsung hero' of that school team.  Deadline is Friday April 24, 2009.
  1. Nominate a deserving individual for the MHSAA student manager award.  This $750.00 scholarship will be awarded to a student manager that has demonstrated real value to the team that he or she has been a part of.  A letter from the coach, outlining the student’s contributions should be sent to morris@mhsaa.ca by April 24, 2009.
  1. Coaching Manitoba is offering four bursaries of $500 each to a male and female student from the Winnipeg region and rural Manitoba. This is to encourage students to continue coaching in Manitoba while attending a post-secondary institution. Students who are, or will be, enrolled in the upcoming school term in a post-secondary institution and are currently coaching for a school, club or community center are invited to submit an application.   1. SAG 2009-  will be held on October 23.  MHSAA will not sanction any
    tournament during that day.  Tournaments beginning at 3:30 p.m. on October
    23, will be approved.

    recently printed in the U of M student newspaper, the Manitoban.
