MHSAA Update

Number 20

April 27, 2006

1. Track & Field spikes -
At Selkirk - Athletes can use 5 mm or 7 mm spikes (ceramic or metal are fine). The 9 mm spikes are too long for most events but could be worn for high jump.
At Pan-Am stadium - Athletes can use only 5mm or 7 mm Ceramic spikes.

2. Winnipeg STUDENT Representative - The Board of Directors is looking for a Winnipeg student representative to fulfill the position of urban student rep as our current one is graduating. We would prefer a grade 11 student, as this is a two-year term. The successful candidate will be required to attend four Board Meetings per year, as well as provincial championships, etc. If you have an active student that you believe would be an appropriate candidate, please contact Morris or Carey. There is also more information on our website.

3. Notices of Motions - the notices of motions to be voted on at the 2006 AGM are now up on our website.

4. Rural Soccer Championships - If any schools are interested in hosting the 2006 Provincial RURAL Soccer Championships, please contact Carey at 925-5642. The dates for this championship will be October 13 & 14.

5. Cross Country Running Championships - will be held on Thursday, October 12

6. Track & Field Multi Event (Point Table) - the point table to determine placings for the multi event is now up on our website, under Track and Field Update. Or go directly to: http://www.mhsaa.mb.ca/pages/multi.php

7. Weightlifting competition - It has been brought to our attention that there is a Manitoba high school weightlifting competition this weekend. This event is in no way sanctioned with the MHSAA.

8. Red River College - is having identification camps in May for their Volleyball and Basketball teams. For more information contact Ryan Ratushniak at 632-3030 or email him at rratushniak@rrc.mb.ca

9. SAG Conference - Remember that SAG will be held in November now, so that 3rd weekend in October is now open to host tournaments.

10. Baseball equipment - There seems to be some confusion between the batting helmet facemasks for fastball and baseball. For the sport of fastball runners and batters require facemasks on their helmets. Baseball does NOT require the facemask on their helmet.

11. Track and Field implements - please note that the following are the implement weights that are in affect starting this season, as per the Provincial Handbook:

Shot put - JV girls, JV boys and SR girls - 4kg SR boys - 5 kg
Discus - Girls - 1 kg Boys - 1.5 kg
Javelin - Girls 600 grams Boys - 700 grams

(This equipment is available through Home Run Sports)

12. Legion Athletic Camps - the 45th Legion Athletic Camp will occur from July 16 - August 26, 2006. Registrations are now being accepted. Students should register early to ensure that you are not disappointed. This camp is hosted at the International Peace Garden and boasts 12 sports to choose from for 2006! For Further information, check out http://www.legionathleticcamp.com/

13. Soccer - As per my indication at the Zone Presidents' Meeting, Winnipeg schools will not be required to have MSA soccer identification cards this year. This is as a result of an agreement and ongoing discussions between the MHSAA and MSA. Winnipeg Schools will be required to fax a copy of their eligibility sheet to the MHSAA Office.

14. High School Baseball - I have been informed that some schools may be using students that do not attend their school to play high school baseball. Please remind your zone members that baseball is an official MHSAA sport, and is therefore subject to all the rules and regulations that apply. Consequently, student athletes can only play for the school that they are enrolled in. Pitchers cannot be "borrowed" from other schools.

15. Board of Directors Representation - We have two urban positions available on the Board of Directors for the coming school year. These are a two-year term positions, and we are looking for at least one administrator. Please circulate this information, or suggest people that we could recruit.

16. MTS Golf Classic will once again be looking for volunteers this year. The Classic will be held again at PineRidge from July 13-16. More info will be forthcoming.
