MHSAA Update

1. CORRECTION – the River East Outdoor Meet will be held on Thursday April 27 (not April 17 as mentioned earlier) from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Cost is $4.00/athlete or $50.00/team. Field events will be done cafeteria style and it is a “sticker” meet and there will not be hurdles. For more information, contact Danielle Fontaine at 338-4611 or email her at dfontaine2@retsd.mb.ca

2. Basketball Summit, April 21, 2006 – there is an agenda on the MHSAA website, as well as the registration form.

3. Multi event in Track & Field – is ready for implementation. The details of this event are now up on our website. Please visit our homepage and click on “track and field update”.

4. Athlete Discussion: Olympic Preparation - You are invited to attend an Athlete Discussion with several of the 2006 Turin Olympians. Cal Botterill, who has been to 8 Olympic Games, will be facilitating the discussions, comparing athlete preparation for the 2002 Olympics and preparation for the 2006 Olympics. Why are Canadian performances improving? What will athletes be doing to prepare for the 2010 Olympics?

We are expecting the following to attend:

Performance Technology officers – Adrian Honish and Carolyn Taylor
Support Staff – Hub Berube
Where: Room 136 Frank Kennedy – University of Manitoba
When: April 12 - 5:00 – 7:00pm

5. Looking for Jewish Athletes - The Rady Jewish Community Center is
looking for candidates to be considered for Jewish Athlete of The Year. If
you have any Jewish athletes in your school (they do not necessarily have to
compete for your school), can you contact Ernie Nairn at 885-3330 x 277 or
e-mail enairn@assiniboiadowns.com.

6. Student Manager Award $500.00 scholarship – If you know a deserving individual, please submit a letter of nomination with detailed information about the contributions made by the Student Manager. Letters should be sent to Morris Glimcher. Deadline for nominations is May 1, 2006.

7. CSSF/Canada Basketball Scholarships 5 x $1000.00 awards- deadline April 15- applications on website http://www.mhsaa.mb.ca/pdfs/scholar/Canada_Basketball.pdf

8. Easton Sports High School hockey “unsung hero” award- This award is for a player that is a leader or “behind the scenes” player on your team. If you know of a deserving candidate, please send a letter of nomination to the MHSAA office 925-5624 (fax) or morris@mhsaa.ca. This person is not necessarily the best or most talented player, but rather a leader and motivator and will be awarded a pair of Synergy1200C skates (value $500.00). Deadline for nominations is Thursday, April 20, 2006.

9. Birchwood Auto Group – Thinking of buying a new car?? MHSAA and Birchwood Auto Group have put together a special $200.00 incentive for MHSAA coaches. Call now and we will mail out a voucher. In the meantime, visit www.birchwood.mb.ca.

10. AAA Alarms – AAA Alarms is please to offer $50 off the purchase of a new alarm and 3 months basic monitoring free to MHSAA coaches and teachers purchasing a new alarm system. 11. Softball equipment – As of this year, batters will be required to wear helmets with facemasks. The official ball is the Worth Red Dot 12" Optic - COR 46

12. Basketball in Thompson - We would like to invite you and your varsity basketball team NORTH! R.D. Parker Collegiate (in Thompson) is planning to host a 2nd bi-annual “South Comes North” invitational basketball tournament on Jan. 11, 12 & 13, 2007 for senior varsity girls and boys.

We are offering the following incentives: A competitive tournament, four game guaranteeing, No entry fee, Free accommodations in the school, $200.00 towards each team’s travel expenses, Assistance in organizing travel (We would like to arrange 2 buses to 3 teams, each at our special rate), Special northern hospitality; we are planning entertaining events for the athletes and will arrange educational tours on request. eg: museum, mine, Pisew Falls, All-star and MVP awards. 14. Cross Lake Girls Fastball Tournament - are looking for teams to attend their tournament in Cross Lake on May 5-7. Please contact Nick Halcrow at 676-2050.
