DONALD IRWIN BARTON (published on May 30, 2009)
DONALD IRWIN BARTON November 22, 1943 - May 27, 2009 It is with great
sadness the family announces the unexpected passing of Don Baton in the ICU
of St. Boniface Hospital on Wednesday, May 27, 2009.
Don has joined his
dearly beloved wife, Gail, who had just passed away in July, 2007. With her,
he rests in love. Don was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Nickey Barton
and in-laws Ron and Tex Wallace. He will be forever missed by his children:
Sandra (Todd) Young; son Matthew; his sister Joan (Tom); his brother Bob
(Fran) and his sister-in-law Judy; grandchildren: Silas and Jasmine;
nephews: David, Paul and Casey.
Don was the baby of the family, growing up
on Kingston Crescent. He spent his childhood on an ice rink with Christmas
oranges and shortbread in his pocket. He became quite the athlete and his
sportsmanship and people skills lead him into a long career of teaching and
coaching.
He graduated Grade 12 at United College Collegiate and went on to
the University of Manitoba to complete his degree in Physical Education. His
first teaching job was at Queen Elizabeth School then a year in the country
in Waskada. He spent most of his teaching career in St. James Assiniboia
School Division, retiring as Vice Principal at Sturgeon Creek Collegiate. He
offered structure and guidance and sheer heart to all students. He was very
instrumental in starting up high school hockey in the province of Manitoba.
He was very proud of this and has been honoured for it. Don was booked up
for golf, baseball, hockey and poker up until three weeks before his
passing. He was incredibly active and as it's been said before - he lived a
full life right to the end. He was able to spend a whole week with his
beloved daughter and two grandchildren before he left us. His son Matthew,
who was a great son and friend to him, kept him going these last two years.
Don loved him very much. Don leaves a multitude of friends who will miss him
greatly. Every one of you meant the world to him and each one of you in your
own way has helped him through these last two difficult years.
It is
impossible to single out all his best buds . You all know who you are. Share
with each other the happy memories you will have forever. In keeping with
Don's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating
his life will be held on Thursday, June 4 at 11:00 a.m. in the Charleswood
United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. A reception will follow at the Headingley Community Centre, 5353 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
may be made to a charity of one's choice. We love you , Dad, dear brother
Rest in Peace - you deserve it. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.
