4.0 Business Arising from June 2004 Annual General Meeting

4.1 Schools in Sport Task Force
Sport Manitoba was pleased with the information exchange during the discussion groups. Morris sits on a committee reviewing the whole process. Discussions are positive and ongoing. They are at least a year away before any kind of implementation.

4.2 Discussion Groups Feedback
The discussion groups are very important and the staff reviews the feedback. There was a general consensus to informally utilize an online scheduling/scoring system. A "Parents as Good Sports" workshop will be piloted, starting in October. We received feedback that the PACER can be put online, but schools appreciate an initial mailout in September, which has been done.

7.0 Executive Director's Report

7.1 High School Sports Week
High School Sports Week will take place October 16-23. Posters will be mailed out this week. We would like to promote the week better so more schools will take advantage of it. This week is a great opportunity to promote high school sports, coaches appreciation and the positive benefits of school sport. For 2005, Morris would like to solicit people for a promotions committee and create a resource package.

7.2 Sponsorship
We have maintained our sponsors for this year and in some cases support has increased. Manitoba Telecom Services was very pleased with their first year of sponsorship and are looking to expand their relationship. McDonald's is our biggest corporate partner. Boston Pizza, a rather recent sponsor, is very happy with their relationship. They provide product to many of our events and cash for the "AAAA" volleyball championships. CIBC, who sponsored the Scholar Athlete awards for the past 10 years, has moved in another direction and have ended this relationship. Manitoba's Credit Unions was excited to pick this up. They have increased the amounts to 4 - $1000.00 scholarships. Coca Cola is still onboard. The Manitoba Milk Producers has changed their name to the Dairy Farmers of Manitoba. Total sponsorship for MHSAA is in the proximity of $50,000 (cash and services).

7.3 CSSF Meeting
The Canadian School Sports Federation annual meeting is in Quebec at the end of this month. This is an excellent opportunity for the provinces to compare issues and share information. It is a great networking opportunity for the Executive Directors, Presidents and other volunteers.

7.4 Hazing
Hazing is an issue that we identified last spring and included in our Game Plan. There have been some serious incidents in the United States and some in Manitoba, most recently in a non-sport context in the Pas, as well as with the Winnipeg Football Club. We will address this issue and develop a template and policy statement to circulate within the schools.

7.5 Parents As Good Sports
The idea of a parent education course was discussed last year. Morris has made contact with two former Stanford University professors that have put together a workshop for this. The MHSAA will host a workshop with parents, referees and the athletes. We will be hosting two trainers' in-services, October 13 & 14 in Winnipeg as a pilot project.

7.6 Student Leadership Conference
Our Making Connections workshop has run its course and it may be time to look at a new direction. Morris and Blair DuGray took some students to Indianapolis for a conference, where topics such as recruiting, hazing, etc were discussed. It also included many ideas for schools to promote and better the school sports programs in there schools. Morris will gather more information and present a concept paper.

7.7 Website updates
The website is definitely being utilized with over a million hits last year. Were looking at student "sign up" section.

- Master schedule/database program (ETS) - There are a few zones that are going to attempt putting their volleyball schedules online. We will attempt this scheduling/scoring system as a pilot project with any zones that are willing to try it.

7.8 Champions
The Champions program is a drug and alcohol cross-mentoring workshop for school student leaders. It has been ongoing for approximately nine years. We are presently looking for new 'team' of facilitators. The October workshop is filling up fast and we are looking at hosting another one in late winter.

8.0 Eligibility Appeals - September 22, 2004
Presently there are four appeals, with a few more expected to come in. Extenuating circumstances are the main reason for the appeals. Overage and graduated students are not considered.

9.0 Correspondence

9.1 two female students at West Kildonan want to try out for the boys hockey team. The school does have a girls hockey team.
