The Manitoba
High Schools Athletic Association supported by Manitoba's
Credit Unions, presented $1,000.00 scholarships to four outstanding
Manitoba High School students on Thursday, June 23, 2005.
In order to qualify for this award, students must participate
in at least two interscholastic, athletic activities and maintain
a minimum 85% average. Other criteria that are considered
are the student's involvement in school and community activities,
athletic achievements, as well as a two hundred word essay
indicating the importance of school sport.
The awards
were presented at a reception hosted at Government House by
His Honour, Lieutenant Governor John Harvard. Mr. Mel Edmunds,
of Swan Valley Credit Union, representing Manitoba's Credit
Unions and MHSAA President, Ross Metcalfe also participated
in the awards ceremony.
Ashley
Morris of John Taylor Collegiate participates in cross-country
running, volleyball, basketball, badminton, handball and track
& field. She was captain of the varsity volleyball and
basketball teams and was selected as an all-star at a number
of tournaments in both sports. She has an 88 % average. Ashley
was chosen as a graduating all-star in both volleyball and
basketball this year, and was selected Most Valuable Player
at the "AAAA" Basketball Provincials which John
Taylor captured. She also serves on Student Council.
Ashley
states, "Athletics are an essential part of a well rounded
high school education. They prepare you for life in ways that
the classroom cannot. Commitment, leadership and motivation
are just some of the skills that athletes develop while participating
in high school sport
the feeling you get after
achieving a personal best or winning a championship is what
pushes me to work harder. Athletes understand that success
requires hard work and are willing put in the effort to experience
that success."
Willie
Bell of Lord Selkirk Regional Secondary School, participates
in volleyball, cross-country running, indoor and outdoor track
and water polo. He placed first in the senior boys category
in all of the KPAC conference meets and took a silver medal
at cross-country provincials and 4th in the 3000m event at
Provincial Track. He set a number of indoor track records
at the KPAC championship. Willie maintains a 98.1% average
and is Student Council Co-President. He also participated
in the Champions cross-mentoring program, and is chairman
of the Lord Selkirk Youth and Philanthropy Committee.
Willie
states, "Some people look at others with high marks and
say that they must be smart. It may be more likely that students
with high marks simply decided to do the work to obtain their
goal. This is the main thing that sport has taught me, the
correlation between effort and result. As well, my team experiences
have included many friendships and have provided me with both
social and leadership skills
..I feel that a large part
of my education, to this point in my life, has come from sport."
Mallory
Wray of Cartwright School participates in golf, volleyball,
hockey, track & field, and was captain of the golf, volleyball
and hockey teams. She maintains a 95% average and is Valedictorian
for her graduating class. Mallory is President of Student
Council, President of the Grad Committee and is involved with
music and piano. She delivers "meals on wheels",
is involved with Sunday School and other community activities.
Mallory
states, "As a student/athlete, I have definitely had
to become more organized to maintain a high academic standing
and remain successful in athletics. I have become more determined,
self-disciplined, confident and athletically skilled. I have
realized the importance of sportsmanship while continuing
to respect all coaches, officials and especially the opponents
..I
have discovered that athletics aren't only fun and games,
but are learning experiences that strengthen some areas that
are not always focused on in the classroom.
Andrew
Roorda of Dakota Collegiate participates in basketball,
volleyball, handball, and track & field. He is a graduating
volleyball all-star and winner of the Dennis Nord Award for
the outstanding high school volleyball player in Manitoba.
He also was a recipient of the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial
Scholarship and made it to the basketball and volleyball provincials.
Andrew maintains a 97% academic Average and also participates
in the school tour band and University of Winnipeg downtown
jazz band. He coaches grade 7 & 8 girls volleyball at
Labarrier Crossing school.
Andrew
states, "Being involved in interscholastic athletics
has developed my goal setting skills, and more importantly,
given me an inner sense of achievement and satisfaction. It
is this sense of achievement that has instilled a greater
confidence within me in all areas of life. Athletics have
taught me to effectively deal with negative situations with
class and dignity, molding me into the young man I am today
..High
school sport is an essential aspect of the scholastic experience.
It offers the students a chance to develop long-lasting friendships
and involve them in a social activity."
Forty-three
nominations from across the province were submitted. Each
of the four recipients will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship
from Manitoba's Credit Unions, as well as an attractive plaque.
The scholarship is to be used towards full-time post-secondary
education.

CIBC Scholar/Athletes
Announced
The Manitoba
High Schools Athletic Association, in cooperation with CIBC,
is pleased to announce the winners of the 2004 CIBC Scholar
Athlete Awards. These awards are presented to four (4) graduating
high school athletes who maintain a minimum 85% average, and
compete in at least two (2) inter-scholastic athletic sports.
Other criteria used to select the recipients include community,
school and citizenship activities.
Suzanne
Holatko, of Silver Heights Collegiate, is captain of both
her varsity volleyball and basketball teams. She received
the Carl Ridd basketball scholarship and was MVP at the Silver
Heights Basketball tournament. Her volleyball team was also
recognized with the Manitoba Hydro Sportsmanship Award. Suzanne
maintains an 89% average and scored a 100% mark on the provincial
pre-calculus exam. She referees basketball and softball in
the community and has judged at the Golden Gate Science Fair.
Suzanne
states, "High school sports have given me many opportunities
over the past four years. They have taught me leadership skills
and responsibility
.Playing sports over the years also
kept me out of trouble. Instead of spending my time watching
television, I spend my time working out or practicing for
the big game
..One of the biggest influences in high
school sports are your coaches. They are the ones who will
teach you many skills, the ones who might get mad at you,
but always want the best for you."
Adam
Muzychuk, of St. Paul's High School, is a three-sport
athlete participating in football, rugby and hockey. Both
his football and hockey teams gained city champion status,
and as well Adam was awarded the Friar Nicholson hockey scholarship
for his outstanding abilities and citizenship in high school
hockey. Adam maintains a 95.6% average and is class council
sports rep, and participates in a variety of other activities,
both school and community.
Adam states,
"
.High school athletics are an integral part of
a well rounded education. Playing sports at the high school
level teaches the participants many lessons that cannot be
taught in the classroom. Such lessons include: teamwork, the
idea that the individual is part of the whole and can reach
greater heights by working effectively with others, as well
as teaching balance in daily life
.The memories of playing
high school sports with my friends will always be with me
and I know that some day, I will undoubtedly become
one of those embarrassing dads that never stops telling his
children's friends about how great his school was at sports
and how much fun he had playing."
Holly
Kroeker, of Boissevain School, participates in volleyball,
basketball, badminton and fastball. Her volleyball team made
it to the provincial championship, where she was selected
as an all-star, while her basketball team captured the provincial
championship and she was named Most Valuable Player, and selected
as the Players' Choice Award winner. She was also a member
of the Graduating All-Star volleyball team and her basketball
team received an NBA Sportsmanship Award. Holly maintains
a 95% average and is involved with many school committees
including the grad decorating committee, singing O'Canada
at home games and student government. She plays guitar and
sings in a church group.
Holly
states, "High School athletics have been a huge benefit
to me because they have allowed me to get to know people in
my school that I would not have otherwise gotten to know.
You grow up so close to your teammates because you are with
them all the time. The friendships that I have built through
sports are something that I will never give up. School sports
has taught me how to organize my time and my school work.
It is hard to balance friends, school and sports and it has
taken self discipline to accomplish a working equation."
Ryan
Hudson, of Dakota Collegiate participates in volleyball,
hockey, basketball and handball. His Lancers captured the
Provincial "AAAA" Volleyball Championship where
he was selected as an All-Star. He was also selected to the
Graduating All-Star volleyball team and was runner up for
the MVA Player of the Year. He received the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko
Memorial scholarship award, was co-captain of the Lancers
Hockey team and received the Winnipeg Enterprises Scholarship
for hockey. Ryan maintains a 96% average and is on the Student
Council Sports Committee, volunteers at church, Manitoba Marathon
and other activities.
Ryan states,
"It has been said that what defines you as a person is
what you do and how you do it. High school sports has molded
my personality and allowed me to grow into the person that
I have become. High school sports truly goes beyond just athletics
as the countless life lessons that I have learned from my
experienced coaches will undoubtedly stay with me for the
rest of my life. I can truly say that high school sport has
left me a better person. I have learned many values and life
skills."
These
four individuals will receive a $500.00 scholarship from CIBC
as well as an attractive plaque. Presenting the awards is
Mike Selci, General Manager, CIBC Imperial Service Centre.
