Justin Lewis of the Antler River Devils (Deloraine, Waskada, Melita) boys hockey team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

At the recent Brandon tournament, this right winger had 9 points, including 7 goals in 5 games. He is also the teams leading scorer. “For a team that has been struggling with scoring goals, it was great for Justin to step up with such a good performance,” says Coach Tony Franklin, “He is a quiet player who competes hard every game and has a good scoring touch around the net.”

Lewis is a grade 12 athlete who maintains a 75% academic average. He also enjoys badminton and is involved in the 4H cattle program in Melita.

Erick Rocan of the St. Joachim Braves boys volleyball team in LaBroquerie, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.
As the captain of the Braves, he led his teammates to a bronze medal at the recent “A” boys volleyball championships. Standing at 5’10”, he set for the team and led them to the zone 13 title. “As our setter and captain, he knew how to motivate his teammates in striving to play better and harder, set after set, match after match,” quotes Coach Luc Bremault, “this was most evident in the third place game when he provided a motivational speech between games to inspire the team.” For his efforts he was named to the “A” boys championship all star team.
In his grade 12 year, Rocan competes in golf, track and field, badminton, curling and volleyball while maintaining a 75% academic average.

Jill Patmore of the Reston Tigers girls volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Patmore led her team to Provincial championship honors in the “A” category last weekend, where she was also selected as the MVP. This 5’10” middle hitter is the captain of the Tigers. “Jill is a very competitive athlete that works hard and is a very valuable team member and is a great asset to our athletic programs,” states Coach Richard Lochhead.

In her grade 12 year, Patmore competes in badminton, track and field and badminton while maintaining a 75% academic average. She is also the student council treasurer of the school.

Brock Fisher of the Wawanesa Warriors boys volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In his S4 year, this 6’4” athlete plays the left side position on the Warriors team. He is the team leader in passing (2.28) and in kill efficiency (53%). As the captain, he led his team to the zone 9 banner and will lead his team into competition this weekend at the “A” Volleyball championships in Treherne. “He is a very coachable athlete and his dedication to improving his game has been impressive,” says Coach Paul Friesen, “Brock’s demeanor on the court has an immeasurable influence on the entire team’s performance.”

He also competes in hockey and basketball, while maintaining an 82% academic average.

Stephan Lesage of the Portage Trojans boys volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In his S4 year, this 6’1” athlete plays the middle position of the Trojans team. He recently led his team to a third place finish in Dauphin. “Stephan has an excellent attitude on and off the court. He is so successful because he works hard at whatever he does,” explains Coach Rob Gamache, “His success on the court also translates into success in school. He is an all round great person.”

Lesage also competes in Basketball and track and field, while maintaining a 75% academic average.

Stefan Riel of the Gabrielle Roy les Roys boys volleyball team, in Iles des Chenes, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 athlete, stands at 6’1” and is the team Captain. He has led his team in kill efficiency (53%) and passing (2.53) and plays the of power hitter. “Stefan has been our most consistent player at the net for some time now and never gives up,” says Coaches Michel Lavergne and Roger Vermette, “he is quickly developing into one of the provinces most effective left side hitters and has an excellent repertoire of shots and his jump serve is tough to pass.”

Riel is also a leader at school, as the student council president. He also excels in academics with an 84% average.

Kalyn Warner of the Goose Lake Angels girls volleyball team, in Roblin, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 athlete is the Captain of the angels. At 5'8", she plays both positions of power and setter. "With such a young team, Kalyn has a real ability to keep the girls level headed," states Coach Jarrett Newton, "She's in every morning for practice, works really hard and is a good role model for our younger players."

In her grade 12 year, Warner maintains an academic average of 85% and participates in Basketball, fastball, badminton and track and field.

Amy Walters of the Morris Mavericks girls volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Walters is a grade 12 student athlete who plays the position of libero for her Mavericks. “Amy is the leader of team and the only grade 12 on the team. Her calming manner on the floor has a great effect on the team and she is content with her role as she realizes that her role makes the team stronger,” states Coach Fred Kelesnik, “she is a real pleasure to coach.” She is averaging a passing average of 2.85.”

Walters also participates in soccer, fastball and badminton. She also still finds time to compete in figure skating, coach figure skating, refs junior varsity and junior high volleyball, while playing in the school’s concert and jazz bands and the drama production. As busy as she is, she still maintains an astonishing 96% academic average.

Jolene Vandijk of the Dufferin Christian Stingers girls soccer team in Carman is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Vandijk plays the position of center fullback for her Stingers, who captured gold at last weekend’s Provincial rural girls soccer championships in Pinawa. They qualified for the championships by winning the zone 4 championship. “Jolene is our regular blue collar defence and is really steady,” according to Coach Mike VanDervelde, “She often goes unrecognized and we would be lost without her.

This grade 12 athlete maintains an 83% average in her studies and also competes in basketball and track and field. She is on the school’s yearbook and graduation committees. She also finds time to volunteer at the hospital and old age home.

Garth Thiessen of the Mennonite Collegiate Blues boys soccer team in Gretna is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.
Thiessen plays the position of goalie for the Blues and he led them to a shutout victory to win the zone 4 soccer championships and a number 3 seed into this weekend’s provincial championships in Steinbach. Due to a broken hand, he played the regular season as a midfielder. This past Friday, with his cast off, he went back into the net to make a difference. “Garth was definitely the difference in the championship match,” states Coach Lester Schellenberg, “He is extremely confident in goal, which showed itself as he made several key saves in the first half and one more to save the game late; and all of this on his first match in goal in nearly two months.”
This grade 12 athlete maintains a B+ average in his studies and also competes in volleyball. He is involved in the Chamber choir, the Jazz vocal ensemble and co-head of the school’s ecology committee.

Becky Ellchuk of the Crocus Plains Plainsmen girls volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 athlete is a 5’7” libero, who is passing at 2.21 this season. She is one of only two grade 12 players on this number two ranked Plainsmen team. “Becky is the ideal student-athlete who plays for the love of the game and the team is the only thing that matters,” Coach Kevin Neufeld says, “she has changed positions each of her three years for the good of the team. She really loves this game.”

Ellchuk maintains an 82% average and she enjoys coaching and running volleyball clinics for middle years students.

Teri Young of the Carman Cougars girls soccer team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 fullback led her team to three wins in league play last week, where she was key to their defence not giving up a goal. “Teri takes most of our free kicks and many of our throw-ins due to her skill. She has been our best player so far” According to Coach Neil Martin, “She is a great defender and is almost always the first player to a free ball.” Young also leads the team as Co-captain, and thus far she has also led them to a 4-2 record.

Young also competes in badminton while maintaining an 84% academic average. She also coaches grade 7 & 8 teams and coaches youth soccer in the community.

Nico Loewen of the Garden Valley Zodiacs boys soccer team in Winkler is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 striker stands at 5’9” and led his team to victory at their home tournament with 7 goals in three games, including the winning goal in the championship game. He was chosen as player of the game in the first game of the tournament. “Nico is a very quiet and humble athlete who is quickly establishing himself as the top striker for Garden Valley,” says Coach Lorne Warkentine, “this German exchange student has a great shot and works together with the midfielders very well.”

Loewen maintains a 90% academic average and competes in track and field and baseball.

Angela Kroeker of the Morden Mohawks girls track and field team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 track and field star won the shot put and discus in all four meets she competed in this season. Kroeker capped off her high school track and field career with gold medals in those same events at both the Rural and McDonald’s high school track and field championships. At the rural championships, she threw the shot 10.75m and the discus 31.01. In Winnipeg, last weekend, at the McDonald’s championships, she bettered her shot put throw at 10.76 and threw the discus 30.56. “Angela is one of the most coachable and dedicated athletes I have ever coached,” quotes Coach Al Wirth.

Kroeker is the captain of the track and field team, competes in soccer, her grad committee and 4-H. She also excels in academics with a 90% academic average.

Kevin McNeill of the Carberry Cougars boys’ baseball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

McNeill leads his team in nearly every statistic on the Cougars team. He has struck out 48 batters as the teams pitcher and team captain. His ERA is 1.35 and has done equally well at the plate hitting at a .625. He also plays on a total of five other baseball teams. And recently led his team to a second place finish in zone 7. “Kevin is quietly confident in his skills as a ballplayer. He lets his play serve as an example to his teammates, as he encourages others on their play.” quotes Coach Brian Drysdale.

In his grade twelve year McNeill has also played on the varsity volleyball team and is currently on the track team. This athlete does all of this while maintaining an 83% academic average.

Amber Anseeuw of the Sanford Sabres girls’ track and field team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Anseeuw recently competed in the zone 4 track meet where she placed 1st in the senior girls long jump and shattered the zone 4 record of 5.16 m with a new record of 5.28m. She also placed first in the senior girls 80 m hurdles with a time of 13.06 seconds and first in the senior girls high jump clearing 1.53 m, which is her personal best. “Amber has worked very hard this school year at improving her long and high jump results and even picked up a new event, in the 80 meter hurdles.” quotes Coach Kelly Taylor

In her grade 12 year, this athlete also competed in volleyball and basketball at her school. She is also a recent 4H member, is involved in the Sanford Leadership Program, and is an avid Horseback Rider and a Downhill Skiing Enthusiast. Anseeuw also takes pride in her academics by maintaining a 90% average.

Rachael Oliver of the Carberry Cougars girls fastball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Oliver competes in fastball at Carberry Collegiate as the team’s captain. She has a .489 batting average and 5 RBI’s in two games this season. “Rachael displays a positive attitude and is always encouraging her teammates to play their best. She takes initiative to direct and help younger teammates during practice or play and assists with organizing equipment off the field.,” quotes Coach Gary Salmon.

In her grade 12 year, this athlete also competes in track and field, volleyball and basketball. In her spare time she coaches a grades 7 & 8 basketball team. Oliver completes all of these tasks while maintaining an 80% academic average.

Karen Smith of the St. Claude Olympiens badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Smith competes in girls’ doubles. Recently Smith and her partner Nadine Collet won gold at the zone 6 badminton championships. At the provincial championships, they finished first in their pool and 5th overall. “Karen has a great work ethic. She comes ready to compete every practice and has become a leader on the floor,” quotes Coaches Shannon Steinhoff and Gilbert Gaudet.

In her grade 12 year, this 5’8” player also competes on her schools volleyball, fastball and track and field teams. In her spare time she coached a grades 7 & 8 volleyball and badminton team and helps out in the grade 4 classroom during her spares. Karen completes all of these tasks while maintaining a 75% average.

Patrick Suppes of the Roseau Valley Raiders track and field team in Dominion City, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Suppes competes in senior boys track and field. Recently at the Stonewall meet he placed first in Shot-Put with a throw of 12.44 m, first in Discus with a throw of 39.27m and second in Javelin with a throw of 44.16 m. Following that performance, competing in the Winkler Track Meet he placed first in Javelin with a throw of 48.6 m and first in Discus with a throw of 40.09 m. “Patrick is a good team member. Helpful and encouraging to fellow team mates. He is dedicated to practice,” quotes Coach Clayton Pott.

In his grade 12 year, this 6’4” player also competes on his schools volleyball and baseball teams, all while maintaining an 75% academic average.

Previne Vincent of the St. Joachim Braves girl’s badminton team in La Broquerie, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Vincent competes in girl’s singles where she has placed 1st in the zone 13-championship tournament. “She’s the type that leads by example, and her work ethic at practice is great. She’s very self motivated, self driven, polite and shows good sportsmanship,” quotes Coach Luc Bremault.

In her grade 12 year, Vincent also competes on her schools volleyball, golf, track and field and basketball team, all while maintaining an 85% academic average.

B.J. Neufeld of the Gimli Lakers boys badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Neufeld competes in boys singles where he has placed 2nd in the Brandon tournament and won his home tournament, just this past weekend. At last year’s provincial championships, he finished in the top eight. “B.J. is a very organized, determined and dedicated individual both athletically and academically,” quotes Coach Lyle Eyjolfson.

In his grade 12 year, Neufeld skipped his school’s team to the provincial curling title, while competing on the school’s golf and volleyball team. He also succeeds in his academics where he maintains a 92% academic average.

Souk Xoumphonphackdy of the Portage Trojans boys badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Last week, this boys singles player went 27 wins and 4 losses, winning the Portage tournament on Tuesday, Carman tournament on Wednesday and finished in the top 6 in Brandon on the weekend. “Souk is a very focused student athlete, which is reflected in his academic achievements as well as his steady performance on the badminton court,” says Coach Bruce McCallum, “his strong work ethic and dedication to the sport have allowed him to continue to improve.”

This grade 11 athlete also excels in academics with a 91% academic average and competes in tennis.

Pam Tkachyk of the Elm Creek Cobras girl’s badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Last weekend, at the College Louis Riel badminton tournament, Tkachyk and her doubles partner took the gold medal. She and her partner also won the girls doubles category at the Elm Creek tournament. “Pam works very hard at all sports. She is quick on the badminton court and works as a great team with her partner,” quotes Coach Neil Martin.

In her grade 12 year, Tkachyk competes in volleyball, basketball and track and field. She also does well in academics with an 80% academic average.

Tavis Donnelly of the Pinawa Panthers boy’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In his grade 12 year, this 5’10” forward/guard led his team to the “A” boys basketball championship. For his play he was selected for the Players Choice Award and the championship MVP. This Panther captain averaged 22 points and 10 assists on the season. “Tavis was a leader in all sports this year, culminating with the championships,” says Coach Ann Sisler, “he is a great team player and a true leader on and off the court.”

Donnelly also competes in golf, soccer and volleyball. He is involved with the grad committee and assisted the junior high program as a coach and referee while maintaining a 65% academic average.

Doug Falk of the Carman Cougars boy’s hockey team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, Falk plays center. As co-captain, he led his team to a 7-1 win/loss record in the last week and a half of regular season play, where they clinched first place in zone 4 and a birth to compete in the provincials. Falk scored 4 goals and 5 assists in three games. “Doug is an unsung hero, he plays a very important part to a successful team taking all the key defensive face offs in close games,” quotes Coaches Gerry Falk and Al Pritchard “He is instrumental in building team chemistry with his leadership in the dressing room, on the ice and in the classroom”.

Falk competes in soccer, golf, badminton and baseball. Falk coaches’ the grade 7 & 8 badminton team, and helps teach physical education to the grade 7 class. Falk also officiates the Men’s Recreational Hockey League while maintaining an 87% academic average.

Ian Milne of the Garden Valley Zodiacs boy’s basketball team of Winkler is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, standing at 6’8’ Milne plays post. As captain, he is the teams top scorer and re-bounder averaging 27 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists per game. Milne is a member of the Provincial Basketball Team and was named an all-star at the Wesman Classic and Brandon Tournaments and named MVP at the Oak Park, Windsor Park and GVC tournaments. “This is beyond a doubt one of the most athletic big men in basketball in Canada,” quotes Coach John Klassen and John Friesen, “Ian has all the skills, hardworking, good attitude, leadership and heart to be a top quality basketball player at the next level.”

Milne competes in volleyball, coaches minor basketball and referees basketball while being a part of the school’s student council and maintaining a 90% academic average.

Dayna Philips of the Carman Cougars girl’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, standing at 6’ Philips is a forward. As the Cougars captain she lead her team to third place in the Sanford Tournament, where in the third place game she scored 53 points. Philips is also the Cougars leading scorer averaging 24.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. “Being the only senior, Dayna is able to take over the game, she can post up, and push the ball.” quotes Coach Lyle Myers, “She has a very positive attitude towards her younger teammates.”

Philips also competes in soccer, badminton and coaches younger students while maintaining an 87% academic average.

Brent Davidson of the Morden Mohawks boy’s hockey team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, standing at 6’3” Davidson is a forward. As the Mohawks captain he accumulated 14 points in the last week of play in the regular season, while demonstrating excellent skills, leadership, sportsmanship and all around great team play. “Brent’s focus has been to achieve excellence, he has been consistent with his effort and outstanding team play.” Quotes Coach Jeremy Winslow “Brent has really stepped up his game heading into playoffs.”

Davidson also competes in basketball and helps with minor hockey while maintaining an 82% academic average.

Danni Cote of the Portage Collegiate Pats girl’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, standing at 5’9” Cote plays guard. As the Pats captain she is their leading scorer, averaging 25 points per game. Cote was awarded game MVP at the Piper Classic and Swan Valley Tournament where she was also named a tournament All-Star. “Danni has proven her role as captain by encouraging others, leading warm-ups, getting the team pumped up and leading by example.” Quotes Coach James Reynolds “Her attitude is fantastic and uplifting to other players.”

Cote also competes in hockey, volleyball and badminton while maintaining a 78% academic average.

Matthew Zeiler of the Edward Schreyer Barons boy’s basketball team in Beausejour is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, standing at 6’1” Zeiler plays guard. He scored 77 points in a win over Springs Christian Academy at the Nelson McIntyre tournament. He averages 30 points and 7 assists per game. “Matt has a true passion for the game and it shows in the dedication he has in regards to practice and to his teammates.” quotes Coach Doug Kruk, “Matt is a true competitor who desires to be the best player he can be on and off the court.”

Zeiler, the team captain, also competes in track and field, cross-country and coaches varsity girls basketball team while maintaining a 95% academic average.

Taryn Hajnrych of the Carberry Cougars girl's basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, standing at 5'3" Hajnrych plays guard. Hajnrych is the co-captain, who led her team to various victories throughout the season. She averages 11 points and 6 assists per game. "Taryn has great determination to compete and always plays any sport with a big heart." quotes Coaches Marty Jordan and Ken Friesen, "No one has a greater desire to play basketball than Taryn."

Hajnrych also competes in volleyball, track and field and coaches grade 7 & 8 Girls basketall while maintaining an 80% academic average.

Rhonda Wiebe of the Elm Creek Cobra’s girl’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, standing at 5’7” Wiebe is the Cobras point guard. Wiebe was selected to the all-star team in the Treherne tournament and named MVP in the MacGregor tournament and leads the team in scoring. “Rhonda uses her exceptional quickness to pressure other teams and to steal the ball.” quotes Coach Neil Martin, “she is definitely our on court leader who can be counted on to come through when it counts.”

Wiebe also competes in badminton while maintaining excellence in her academics with an 80% academic average. Wiebe is also involved with the student council and captured the school spirit award. She is the school’s yearbook photographer and is involved with the church youth group.

Marlin Froese of the Garden Valley Zodiak’s boy’s hockey team in Winkler is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, standing at 6’2” Froese plays center. As the assistant captain, Froese is an exceptional hockey player. In last weeks game Froese had 3 goals and 3 assists as they defeated Morden 7-5. Froese was selected as an All-Star for zone 4. The all-star game recently took place in which Froese led team white in scoring with a goal and an assist. “Marlin is a committed leader on and off the ice, he is looked up to by his teammates and peers.” quotes coach Brendan Neufeld, “Marlin is an excellent player to coach, he has the drive and motivation to play better every time he hits the ice.”

Froese also competes in soccer and volleyball while maintaining excellence in his academics with an 86% academic average.

Daniel Perepeluk of the R.D. Parker Trojans of Thompson boy’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In grade 12, standing at 6’5” Perepeluk plays post. He averages 14 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 assists per game. The Trojans played in the Edward Shreyer Tournament where he was named MVP. “A natural leader, he has a positive influence on others on and off the court leaving no questions as to why he is the teams co-captain.” quotes coach Jonathan Wamboldt, “Daniel’s attitude towards practice and games is superior and he always, win or lose, has a smile on his face.”

Perepeluk is also involved in volleyball. When he is not occupied with athletics he volunteers for the community churches while maintaining an 80% academic average.

Ferran Cardinal of the Glenboro School girl’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In her grade 12 year, this guard stands at 5’5”. Recently, Cardinal led her team to victory in the Boissevain Girls Basketball Tournament where she averaged 15 points and 6 steals per game, which enabled her to capture the tournaments Most Valuable Player. “Ferran has a positive competitive attitude and a hard-work ethic” quotes coach Sharon Prost “She has an excellent understanding of the game.”

Ferran, the teams co-captain maintains a 90% academic average while serving as vice-president of the student council. She helps coach the grade 7 & 8 boy’s basketball team and refs middle year’s games. She also participates in volleyball and track and field.

Nikki Porath of the Grandview Spartans girls basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Porath led the Spartans to the Major Pratt pre season tournament championship where she averaged over 25 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 7 steals. In her grade 12 year, she leads the Spartans as their team captain and in the guard position. Nikki leads by example and her effort on the court makes everyone else on the team try just a little harder,” according to Coach Marc Giasson, “she has great instincts and in four years I can’t remember her ever missing a practice.”

This grade 12 athlete extends her success in the classroom

with a 94.5% academic average and competes in volleyball, badminton and Track and Field. She is also involved with the school as the Co-President.
