Shannon Enns of the W.C. Miller Aces, boy’s hockey team, in Altona, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This 5’11” goalie has a G.A.A. of 1.90 in league and has recorded three consecutive shut outs in his last three starts, including a 3-0 win over the number one ranked Mountain Mustangs. “Shannon is a very technically sound goalie who brings a tireless work ethic to every practice and game,” quotes coach Rob Smith, “his dedication and attitude have provided great leadership to the Aces hockey team.”

This grade 12 student athlete also competes in soccer, while earning 70% in his academics.

Colin Hildebrand of the Morden Mohawks boy’s hockey team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This 6’0” center led his team to tournament victory with 10 goals and 8 assists in 4 games, in Killarney last weekend. He is presently averaging three points per game. “Colin is a great leader both off and on the ice,” quotes Coach Braden Boucher of his team’s captain, “he’s always the first guy at practice and the last to leave.”

This grade 12 student athlete also competes in badminton, while earning 80% in his academics.

Kyle Nixon of the Major Pratt Trojans boy’s volleyball team, in Russell, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

As setter and captain of the Trojans, Nixon led his team to gold at last weekend’s “AA” provincial volleyball championships. This is their first championship since 1989. At 6’0”, Nixon’s efforts earned him MVP of the provincial championships. He also earned all-star honors at four tournaments during the regular season. “Kyle is the team spirit and conscience,” quotes Coach Gord Nixon, “He is rarely flustered and pulls the team through the tough spots.”

This grade 12 student athlete also competes in baseball, hockey, badminton and beach volleyball while earning a 95.2% in his academics.

Steegan Stoski of the Gilbert Plains Trojans boy’s volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In his grade 12 year, this 6’3” middle player is the captain of the Trojans. He will be leading his team into the “A” championships this weekend in Grandview. During the season, he earned all-star honors at the Neelin, Landmark and Vincent Massey tournaments. “Steegan is one of the best blockers in the province,” according to Coach Jeremy Love, “he’s a good kid who’s positive and works hard for him and his team to perform.”

Stoski also competes in Volleyball, Basketball, badminton, hockey, curling and track and field, while maintaining a 75% academic average.

Taryn Dickson of the Morris Mavericks girls volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Dickson is the captain of the zone 4 “AA” girls volleyball champions. This grade 12 Maverick stands at 5’5” plays the position of setter. “Taryn is a team leader, first to praise, congratulate and pick up spirits of a player who might be down,” says Coach Fred Kelesnik, “she is a pleasure to coach.”

Dickson is an A+ student and she is involved in the band, drama club, grad committee and yearbook committee. She also finds time to participate in soccer, badminton, curling, fastball, basketball and track and field.

Bryan Diboll of the Portage Trotters boys volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

At 6’2”, this grade 12 athlete is the Trotters setter and team captain. Diboll led his team to victory at their home tournament, where he earned a top sportsmanship award. “Bryan is a terrific competitor, a determined athlete and an intelligent team leader,” raves Coach Bob Kriski, “We are proud to have Bryan representing our school!”

Diboll Currently maintains an 82% academic average, while competing in basketball, golf, badminton, baseball and track and field.

Meghan Barnabe of the St. Jean Baptiste girls volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 player is setter and co-captain of the volleyball team. She led her school to victory at their home tournament and the number two ranking in their category. “Meaghan is one of the best setters I have ever coached,” according to Coach Sheldon Bouchard, “she has terrific hands, a wonderful touch, excellent anticipation and does a great job of not only getting our hitters the ball, but also keeping all of them in the game.”
Barnabe is currently maintaining a “B” average and is part of the student leadership group. She also participates in the intramural program at her school.

Meagan Paradine of the Major Pratt Trojans girls volleyball team, in Russell, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In her grade 12 year, this left side hitter stands at 5'8". She has led her team to the number 5 ranking in the "AAA" category. She has earned all-star and MVP honors at two tournaments this season, while averaging approximately six kills per match. "Meagan has a strong work ethic, positive attitude and is a great leader on our team," says Coach Shawn Baraniuk of his team captain, "she is playing a new position this year and is working very hard at it."

Paradine also excels in academics with a 91% average and competes in basketball, fastball and badminton. She is also a part of the school's chess club, student council and sports committee.

Scott Smook of the Shevchenko Sabres boys soccer team, in Vita, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 fullback led his team to the provincial title at last weekend's provincial championships in St. Laurent. For his efforts, he was named championship MVP. He was one of the key scorers during the penalty kicks of the championship and semi final games. "If it wasn't for him, we probably wouldn't have won," says Principal Peter Osadchuk, "he's the heart and soul of our team and really gets the team pumped up before each game."

Smook also excels in academics with an "A" academic average and plays baseball, basketball, badminton and track and field.

October 15, 2002

Justin Delaurier of the Swan Valley Tigers boys soccer team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 goal keeper led his team to a berth into this weekend's rural soccer championships in St. Laurent. Delaurier hasn't allowed a goal in their last four games. "Justin leads by example and does the little things that often go overlooked," says Coach David Madill of his co-captain, "he is one of the original players that we started our program with four years ago."

Delaurier also excels in academics with an "A" academic average and plays on the Tigers basketball team while volunteering as an official for junior high basketball.

October 8, 2002

Heather Kolomaya of the Ashern Cobras girls volleyball team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In her grade 12 year, this 5'9" right side hitter is the Cobras captain. Kolomaya has led this "AA" school to the number one ranking in the "AAAA" girls volleyball category. Recently, her Cobras captured gold at the Lord Selkirk and Maples tournaments, including only one lost match thus far this season. "Heather leads our team by her inspirational play and hustle," quotes Coach Lawrie Hogg, "she also sets as well as hits very well."

Kolomaya also excels in academics with an "A" academic average. She also is involved in 4-H and competes in curling.

October 1, 2002

Justin Thiessen of the Garden Valley Zodiacs, boys soccer team, in Winkler, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In his grade 12 year, this 5'10" left striker is the Zodiacs co-captain. His team is 15-0 and he has 16 goals and 5 assists on the season. Thiessen has also led his team to tournament victory in St. Laurent, Stonewall and at home. "Justin is a strong team player who is blessed with great speed and field awareness." Quotes Coach Lorne Warkentine, "he has been playing very well despite a nagging injury which has limited his playing time."

Thiessen also competes in hockey, while maintaining a 65% academic average.

September 25, 2002

Dylan Wiebe of the MacGregor Mustangs, boys soccer team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

In his grade 12 year, this 5'8" center midfielder is also the Mustangs captain. "Not only is Dylan one of the most skilled and talented soccer players that I have ever coached, but he is also a great ambassador for the game," quotes Coach Cory May, "He is well respected by his teammates."

Wiebe has a 70% academic standing and is the sports rep for his school. As well, he also competes in x-country running, track and field and all intramural activities

September 18, 2002

Nicole Syntak of the Crocus Plains Plainsmen, girls volleyball team, is the first Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week, for the 2002-03 season.

This 5'9" left side hitter is averaging 6.5 kills per set. Syntak has led the Plainsmen to a 1st and 2nd place finish in tournament play, moving her team into the number two ranking in "AAAA" volleyball. For her play, she has earned MVP honors in the U of Winnipeg tournament and an all star at her home tournament this past weekend. "Nicole is one of the most dominant left side attackers in the province, says Coach Kevin Neufeld, "she is very explosive and has expanded her scoring options this year."

Syntak has an 86% academic standing in her grade 12 year. She also competes in basketball in badminton.

June 11, 2002

Megean Morrison of the Vincent Massey Vikings, girls fastball team, in Brandon, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 pitcher and first baseman led her team to a silver medal at last weekend’s Provincial high school fastball championships in Pilot Mound. She accumulated 23 strike outs in three games and for her play, Morrison was MVP of the championships. “Megean is a strong competitor who leads her teammates by setting a positive example,” says Coach Bryan Webber.

June 4, 2002

Daniel Narvey of the Portage Trojans track and field team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This track athlete took home four medals at last weekend’s provincial rural track and field championships.  He won the senior boys 800m, 1500m and 3000m with times of 2:06.97, 4:29.47, 9:46.60 respectively as well, he ran the 800m leg of their medley relay.  “Daniel is very dedicated to what he does,” quotes Coach Mark Diboll, “he is simply a very, very nice young man.”

This grade 12 student athlete also has success in the classroom with a 92.86% and runs Cross Country.  He has accepted an athletic scholarship to attend Duke University.

May 28, 2002

Kevin Tymofichuk of the Shevchenko Sabres track and field team, in Vita, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This track athlete took home four medals in both last years rural and provincial meets.  He also holds the zone 4 high jump record at 1.90m.  He has qualified for this weekend’s provincial rural track and field championships, in Brandon by capturing the 100m and 4X100m events in zone 4.   “He’s a super kid and a great kid to coach”, according to coach Brian Smook.

In his grade 12 year, he also competes in badminton, soccer, volleyball and baseball, while maintaining an 77% academic average

Andrew Cuddy of the Treherne Tigers track and field team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 track athlete took home four gold medals at last weeks Zone 6 track and field championship, where he led his team to their fourth consecutive aggregate banner.  He captured golds in the 400m, 1500m, 3000m and was a part of the team’s medley relay team.  “Andrew has been the heart and soul of our track team and has led our school to two provincial championship banners,” says Coach Darrel Van Den Bussche, “He is dedicated to the sport and has become a leader for the younger athletes of the team.”In his grade 12 year, he also competes in baseball, volleyball, hockey and badminton, is the school’s sports representative and excels in his studies with an 87% academic average.

Phillip Insisienmay of the Portage Trotters track and field team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 track athlete took home four gold medals at last weekends track and field meet in Winkler.  He captured gold in the 100m with a time of 11.9 seconds, the 200m with 25.3 seconds, the triple jump with 11.31 metres and was a part of the team’s medley relay team.  “Phillip is a solid kid and really dedicated,” says Coach Mark Diboll, “anything he starts, he does a really good job of finishing.”

In his grade 12 year, he also competes in cross country running, is the school’s student president and excels in his studies with an 88% academic average.

Lindsey Green of the St. Claude Olympiens badminton team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

This girls singles player finished first in her zone with an undefeated record.  She caps off her high school badminton career with two zone championships.  Green also finished third in the College Louis Riel tournament.  She will be competing in this weekend’s Provincial High School Badminton Championships in Winnipeg.  “Lindsey displays a positive attitude in all she does,” says Coach Shannon Steinhoff, “Not only does she excel in sports, she is a leader in the classroom.”

In her grade 12 year, she competes n volleyball, curling, fastball, track & field, soccer and badminton while excelling in her studies with a 80% academic average.

Jamie Young of the Vincent Massey Vikings badminton team in Brandon, is this week's Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.This boys singles player has gone undefeated and captured both the Gimli and Carman tournaments.  This past weekend, he captured a silver medal at the College Louis Riel tournament.  “Jamie is a really dedicated athlete who works hard,” according to Coach Bob Woodmass, “he really wants to learn and works hard to constantly improve.”

In his grade 11 year, Young also competes in football and basketball.

Daniel Berard of the College Saint-Jean-Baptiste Saints badminton team, is this week's Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.This past weekend, Berard and his mixed doubles partner, Joelle Sabourin captured first place in the Gimli tournament.  As well, they have taken home gold in the Sanford and Brandon tournaments.  “Daniel is a strong player who controls his emotions very well,” says Coach Sheldon Bouchard, “this team has developed what I consider a unique style of playing mixed doubles which allows them to best use their strengths”.

This grade 12 athlete also participates in volleyball and hockey while maintaining an “A” academic average.

March 19, 2002

Graham Carter of the Ecole Pointe des Chenes Les Cavaliers boys basketball team, in Ste. Anne, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This grade 11 power forward stands at 6’2” and is a co-captain of the Cavalies “A” boys provincial championship team. He led his team to last weekend’s provincial championship earning an all-star with 18 points in the championship game and 16 in the semi finals.   His hard work also earned him an all-star in one tournament earlier in the season.  “After having missed six weeks of basketball season with a broken leg, Graham came back and worked himself into game shape and helped  the Cavaliers through the league final, zones and provincials.” Says coach Dr. Phil Carter, “he is an example of what an athlete should be.”

Carter also competes in cross country running, golf, soccer volleyball and coaches grade, while being the president of the sports committee and member of student council.

Justin Brandt of the Rosenort Redhawks boys basketball team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 guard stands at 5’7” and led his team to the zone 4 basketball “A” championship.  Brandt is averaging 6.5 assists, 4 steals and 10 points per game.  As co captain, he will be leading his team into the provincial championships this weekend in Steinbach.  “Justin puts 100% effort into everything all the time,” says Coach Larry Eidse, “He is very coachable and a key leader of our team.”

Brandt also excels in his studies with an 88% academic average and also competes in badminton and volleyball.

Sasha Viau of the Carberry Cougars girls basketball team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 post player stands at 5’11” and averages 18 points and 11 rebounds per game.  Earlier in the season, she earned MVP status at the Boissevain tournament.  “Sasha has made a real commitment to improve her basketball skills and it shows on the court,” says Coach Ken Friesen, “her hard work will hopefully help her to achieve her future goal of continuing her education and playing basketball at a higher level.”

Viau is a grade 12 student who also competes in volleyball and track and field, while maintaining an 83% academic average.

Candace Dupont of the Birtle Falcons girls basketball team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

Dupont has been named an all-star in the last two tournaments they competed in.  This 5’6” point guard scored a game high of points to go along with her 20 points and 7 rebounds per game average this season.  “Candace is a point guard iron women,” quotes Coach Allan Wilson of his assistant captain, “She never tires out and always remains positive with everyone on the team.”

Dupont also competes in badminton, fastball soccer and volleyball while maintaining an 85% academic average in her studies.

February 19, 2002 

Jared Revel of the Carman Cougars boys hockey and basketball team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.This 6’2” athlete plays center for both of the Cougars teams and leads both teams in scoring and as their captain.  In hockey, he has 39 points after 18 games and is the leagues fourth leading score.  In basketball, he is the team’s leading scorer and has earned two all stars and one MVP in tournaments played thus far.  “Jared has a tremendous amount of talent and when he decides to play, he is unstoppable,” quotes his hockey coach, Gerry Falk. 

Revel is in his grade 12 year and maintains a 71% in his studies.  He also enjoys playing soccer.  After all this, he finds time to volunteer on the coop board of directors and leadership program.

Aaron Lavallee of the St. Laurent Hawks boys basketball team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.This 5’9” point guard averages 15.7 points per game, 4.7 assists per game and has led his team to a 21-4 record.  For his efforts, he has received all star status in five tournaments.  “Aaron is a tremendous leader on and off the floor.” Says coach Andre Ducharme of his team’s co-captain, “He is a spark plug in the dressing room and has great speed and ball handling skills.”

Lavallee is a grade 12 student athlete who maintains a 74% academic average and competes in soccer and track and field.  He is also involved on the student council and coaches the JV basketball team.

Danny Johnston of the Birtle Falcons boys hockey team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.As co-captain of the Falcons, Johnston is a 6’0” center and leading scorer for his team, with an average of 3 points per game.  For his play, he has received numerous player of the game awards in tournament play this season.   “Danny is a huge asset to our team and he lifts the level of play around him,” according to Coaches Mark Wakely and Bill Bowley, “everyone knows that when things get close, Danny somehow, manages to come up with a big goal.”

Johnston also enjoys volleyball and maintains an 82% academic average.

Robert Prevost of the R.D. Parker Trojans boys basketball team in Thompson, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 player is co-captain of the Trojans.  He averages 20 points and 5 steals per game and his play has earned him all-star honors in two tournaments thus far.  “Robert is the most energized athlete I’ve ever coached,” says coach J.J. Langan, “The team thrives off of Robert’s intensity whether he’s on the floor or on the bench”.

Prevost also enjoys volleyball and track and field and maintains an 80% academic average.

Justin Chuchmuch of the Major Pratt Trojans hockey team of Russell, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.Chuchmuch is the Trojans captain and leading scorer.  He plays the position of center and has 10 goals and 12 assists this season.  Chuchmuch also led his team to gold in their home tournament, with 7 goals and 5 assists, earning him MVP honors.  He was also selected to the Westman high school league all-star team.

In his grade 12 year, Chuchmuch maintains an 88% academic average and plays baseball.

Heidi McMillan of the Carberry Cougars girls basketball team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

McMillan led the Cougars to five straight wins and the championship of last weekend’s Boissevain girls basketball tournament, where she was named MVP.  At 5’7”, this guard averages 10 points per game.  “Heidi’s quickness on defense and ability to move the basketball are very important to the team’s success,” says Coach Ken Friesen.

In her grade 12 year, McMillan maintains an 85% academic average and competes on the school’s volleyball, badminton, fastball and track and field teams.

Roger Beauchamp of the St. Joachim Braves in LaBroquerie boys volleyball team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This 6’0” left side hitter, competed in the recent “A” volleyball provincials a few  weeks ago.  He earned all-star status at two tournaments during the regular season and leads the team as captain.  “Roger has the most positive and consistent attitude I have ever seen from a player,” states Coach Luc Bremault, “As a captain, he has promoted respect between players, which made this team one of the most united I have ever coached.”

In his grade 12 year, Beauchamp maintains excellence in his studies with an ‘A’ academic average and competes in hockey, badminton and track and field.  He is also a member of the student leadership program and coaches the grades 7 & 8 volleyball team.

Kendall Campbell of the Provincial "A" Volleyball Champions Glenboro Panthers has been selected as this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.
Kendall is Assistant Captain for her Panther team and maintains an 80% average.  She was selected "Most Valuable Player" at the Provincial "A" Girls' Chamionships which were recently held in Shoal Lake.  As well as being a member of the Provincial Championship Team, she was also selected to the "Graduating All-Star" Team.  "Kendall is an extremely committed and hard-working player," stated Coach Rick Scott ... "she had an outstanding Provincial Championship as well as an outstanding season" continued Scott.Kendall also participates in basketball, track and field, and badminton, and is a member of the Student Council, Grad Committee, and works with special needs students during lunch hour.

Kevin McAuley of the Boissevain/Killarney Raiders high school hockey team has been selected as this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.The grade 12 Captain of the Boissevain/Killarney Co-operative Team leads the league in scoring and has a total of 16 goals and 14 assists in eight league games.   His coaches, Rick Korman and Brad White state:  "His leadership on and off the ice is second to none and his attitude and work ethics extend from the hockey rink into the classroom."Kevin also excels in volleyball, basketball, and golf and maintains a 94% average.

Sheena Grobb of the Treherne Tigers girls volleyball team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This 5’8” middle hitter led her team to a provincial berth, with a wildcard victory, last weekend.  “Sheena is our top defensive player and as a determined an athlete as I have ever seen”, says Coach Darrell VanDenBussche.  She is one of the team’s leaders in passing, kill percentage and blocks.

In her grade 12 year, Grobb maintains excellence in her studies with a 97% academic average and she also competes in basketball, badminton and track and field.

Adam Forbes-King of the Vincent Massey Vikings boys volleyball team, in Brandon, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This 6’4” power hitter earned four all-star honors in tournament play, this season.   In his grade 12 year, he is also captain of the Vikings.  In his league finals he averaged 17 kills per match.  “Adam leads the team physically and emotionally and should be considered one of Manitoba premier prospects for University volleyball,” says Coach Mike DeGroot, “He is also a leader in our school as well as the volleyball court”.

In his grade 12 year, Forbes-King maintains an 87% academic average and competes hockey and badminton.

Maria Wall of the Morris Mavericks girls volleyball team, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 middle player stands at 5’8” and she just led her team to tournament victory, in Gretna, where she averaged 5 kills and 6 service aces.  “Maria is outstanding at blocking and her presence is notice on the court by her teammates,” states Coach Fred Kelesnik, “she is a very good leader and she provides stability for the younger players.”

Wall also excels in her studies where she maintains an ‘A’ academic average.  She also competes in soccer and badminton.

Brandy Pushka of the Major Pratt Trojans girls volleyball team, in Russell, has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.This grade 12 power hitter just led her team to tournament victory, last weekend , which earned her team the number one ranking in the “AA” girls category.  At the tournament, she averaged 5 kills per game.  “Brandy is very quick and explosive,” says Coach Mike Totte, “She is one of the best power hitters I’ve seen in our tournaments this season.”

Pushka also excels in her studies where she maintains an 89% academic average.

Bobby Hourie of the Portage Trotters boys volleyball team has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

At 6’0”, Hourie plays the position of power hitter and leads his team as the captain.   This past weekend, he led his team to silver at their home tournament and an overall record 16-2-6.  In his third year on the varsity team, he leads all players in kills, aces, digs and serving.  “When the game is on the line, Bobby rises to the occasion,” quotes Coach Bob Kriski, “He loves the pressure and the tougher the game, the better he plays.  He is a quiet leader, who does his talking on the floor”.

In his grade 12 year, Hourie maintains a 72% academic average.

Kendra Dyck of the Winnipegosis Lakers girls volleyball team has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This 5’9” power hitter recently led her team to a first place finish at their home tournament and a second place finish at the Dauphin tournament.  In her home tournament, she led the team with 90% passing, 56 kills, 7.5 blocks and 21 digs and was named tournament MVP.  At the Dauphin tournament, she averaged 6 kills per game and 5 digs per game.  “Now in her senior year, Kendra has really upped her game and is leading by example, putting forth an effort in all areas of the game,” says Coach Shaune Beatty, “Kendra is a skilled and talented player, but she is also quick to credit her teammates efforts on the court and bench.”

Dyck is a part of the school’s student council, athletic council and graduation committee. She also figure skates while finding time to maintain an “A” average in her studies.

Mark Bergen of the Garden Valley Zodiacs boys soccer team in Winkler has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

This 6 foot striker assisted his team in defending their provincial title, at the provincial rural high school soccer championships last weekend, on their home pitch.  For his efforts, he was awarded MVP honors.  This season, he scored 10 goals in 16 league games.  “Mark has strong work ethic and never gives up in a game,” quotes Coach Lorne Warkentine, “due to his speed, agility and field sense he has been our most patent  offensive player on the team.”  Bergen is a grade 12 student and co-captain of the team.Bergen also competes in hockey and maintains a 70% average in his studies.

Clinton Bulloch of the R.D. Parker Trojans boys volleyball team in Thompson has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

 “Clint is our most valuable player and has worked hard to become our starting setter this year”, says coach Pete Conway, “his attitude and determination has made him one of our team leaders this year.”  Bulloch is also the captain of the Trojans.

In his grade 12 year, Bulloch also competes and referees hockey and maintains a 75% academic average.

Kim Grimshaw of the Crocus Plains Plainsmen girls volleyball team has been selected as this week’s Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the Week.

Grimshaw is the Plainsmen’s libero player and she has led her team to two tournament gold medals and one tournament bronze.  “Kim is a very committed athlete who comes to the gym every day with a great work ethic and attitude.” States coach Kevin Neufeld, “She loves the newly added libero position and is a tremendous passer and defensive player”.

In her grade 12 year, Grimshaw also plays fastball while maintaining an 84% academic average.

Brett Dalman of the Stonewall Rams girl’s soccer team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Dalman is co captain of the 9-0 Rams and plays the position of sweeper.  She was the team’s defensive MVP in four wins last week, where her team has only allowed one goal thus far, this season.  “Brett is defensive quarterback and controls the middle of center defense,” says coach Charlie Cook “she is in her second year as a co-captain, where she has strong pride in her position.”

Dalman is a grade 12 student in Stonewall.

Whitney Friesen of the W.C. Miller Aces girl's soccer team, in Altona, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Friesen scored 6 goals in 3 soccer games this past week.  She plays the position of center and has led her team to an early season record of 1-1-1.  "Whitney's hard work and dedication make her a natural leader", quotes coach Graham Shindle, "she uses a combination of speed and power to terrorize opposing defenders."In her grade 12 year, Friesen maintains an 80% academic average and also participates in basketball, volleyball and fastball.

Megan McCrae of the Vincent Massey girl’s fastball team, in Brandon, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. McCrae went 3-0 as a pitcher throwing 2 no hitters and allowing only 2 hits and 1 earned run in 3 games at this past weekend’s Provincial Championship to lead her team to the gold medal. McCrae ended up with 18 strikeouts over the course of the championship. Offensively she batted .461 and had 9 R.B.I’s. "Megan has a fierce desire to succeed every time she steps out to play," says Coaches Chad Cobbe and Gary MacKay. "Her work ethic and commitment to being the best player possible provides a tremendous model for our younger players to aspire to." She was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. McCrae has accepted a scholarship to play fastball for the Montana State Yellow Jackets starting in the fall.This grade 12 athlete also participated in basketball and badminton. McCrae is also a member of the Safe Grad committee. She instructs at many youth softball pitching and skills clinics.

Cory Michiels of the Treherne Tigers track and field team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Michiels took home three medals at the Rural Provincials in Brandon last week. He received gold in the Sr. Boys shotput. He also won gold in discus with a record breaking throw of 47.31m. Michiels also won a bronze medal in the triple jump. "Cory is a hard worker who has spent numerous hours perfecting his throwing techniques. It is through this hard work that Cory is now throwing over 6m further than he was at this time last year. He is a perfect example of the rewards that hard work and determination will bring to an athlete," says Coach Darrel Van Der Bussche.This grade 12 athlete also participates in badminton and volleyball. Michiels was named a Provincial All Star for volleyball. He maintains an 80% academic average.

Blane Pohl of the Roseau Valley Raiders track and field team, in Dominion City is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. Pohl took home three gold medals at last week’s Zone 4 track and field championships. His victories were in the 100m, 200m and 400m with times of 11.47, 23.18 and 51.74 seconds respectively. Earlier in the season, this grade 12 sprinter also took home two silvers and a gold at the Sisler invitational meet. "Blane is very coachable and stays on task", says Coach Clayton Pott, "He’s an excellent leader and he even helps out with other sprinters on the team".Pohl also competes in volleyball, cross-country and hockey while maintaining an 87% academic average.

Sarah Green of Stonewall Rams Rugby team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. Green has led the team to victory in the last two games. Last Tuesday’s game Green scored two tries and one convert kick. She tackles well and has great speed offensively. "Sarah show positive leadership and leads by example. She is a most valuable asset to the team with her athletic ability and good communication skills. She excels in defense and offense plays and is a pleasure to coach because she has a positive attitude and always tries to improve" says coach Linda Perron. Green plays the position of stand off.This grade 12 athlete, plays the position of stand off while maintaining a 76% academic average.

Derrek Funk of Ecole St Joachim Braves of La Broquerie is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. Funk finished 4th at the Badminton Provincial Championship. He also finished 1st at St Jean Baptiste and Ecole St Joachim, 2nd at Collége Louis Riel, and 3rd at Gimli. Funk won gold in both the Divisional and the Zone Championship. "Derrek coached our junior varsity team along with another student, he is very organized and the practices were always nicely prepared. He never misses a practice and practices on his own time, sometimes in the morning before school" says coach Yvette Mallet. He accomplished all this after a broken ankle in November.This grade 12 athlete played volleyball for the school and is also on the track team. Funk maintains an 85% academic average and is part of the grad committee.

Christine Lavelleé of Collčge St-Jean-Baptiste Saints is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. Lavelleé won the Zone 4 Ladies Singles Badminton Title in Carman. Her win helped her school team to capture the Zone 4 Team Aggregate Title. "Christine has trained very hard, but it is the effort on her mental approach to the game that has really payed dividends" says coach Sheldon Bouchard. Lavalleé lost in the final of a Carman tournament, and was a semi-finalist at the Louis-Riel tournament.This grade 12 athlete has coached junior varsity girls volleyball for the past two years. Lavalleé has also officiated volleyball at the junior high level, and helped with the junior high badminton program.

Martin Daneault of the College St. Jean Baptiste Saints badminton team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. Daneault went undefeated at the Brandon tournament this past weekend in the round robin for boys singles, eventually being defeated in the semi-finals. His wins helped the Saints to win the team championship. Daneault qualified for the next round of Zone elimination by winning in Sanford. "Martin has a great deal of natural ability, but what has really permitted him to succeed is his determination, strong work ethic, and positive attitude", says Coach Sheldon Bouchard. Last year Daneault finished second in Zone 4 and qualified for Provincials, as well as winning gold in boys singles at the Invitational Junior Varsity Championship.This grade 12 athlete has been a member of the school’s Athletic Committee and House Captain for the intramural program for the past 4 years. Daneault coaches and officiates junior high volleyball as well as coaches the varsity track team along with another student.

Renée Sabourin of the College St. Jean Baptiste Saints badminton team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Sabourin and her doubles partner Kendra Doerksen captured gold at the Louis-Riel tournament this past Saturday. This doubles team has won gold in Gimli and twice in Carman. Last year Sabourin and Doerkson finished 2nd in Zone 4 and won Bronze at the provincials. "Renée’s ability to strike the shuttle with authority is certainly a factor in their team’s success. Her ability to adapt to different styles of play is also very important", says Coach Sheldon Bouchard.Sabourin maintains an "A" average in grade 12. She’s involved in fundraising for the grad committee, as well as coaching junior high volleyball last year.

In mixed doubles competition, last year, she won the zone 4 title and consolation side at provincials. "Christine has worked so hard in achieving her goals all through high school," quotes coach Sheldon Bouchard, "She’s a lot of fun to work with".In her grade 12 year, Sabourin also excels in academics with an "A" average and participates in volleyball, curling, fastball and ringette. She contributes to the school in many activities and still finds time to coach and referee volleyball.

Aaron Amann of the Portage Trojan’s boy’s basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This 6’4" point guard, led his team to the silver medal at the "AAA" Provincial Basketball Championships averaging 25 points, 7 assists, and 4 rebounds per game. For his efforts he was named to the Championship All-Star team. "Aaron works harder than anyone else, never complains, and sets a high standard for all his teammates and they responded in kind at the Provincial Championship. His ball handling borders on magical, while his shooting, especially from the free throw line is close to perfect. He is fast, strong and impervious to intimidation" explains Coach Mike Lukyn.Amann, in is his Grade 12 year, is the captain of the Trojans, and is also a member of the Varsity Volleyball, Soccer and Badminton teams while maintaining a solid 70% average.

Jason Friesen of the Garden Valley Zodiacs boy’s basketball team in Winkler is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This 5’9" guard, led his team to the Bronze Medal at the "AAA" Provincial Basketball Championship held in Portage, averaging 37 points per game, and scoring a Tournament high 49 points against Swan Valley in the Championship Semi-Final. Friesen was named to 3 All-Star teams over the course of the season, including the Provincial Championship, and was the Most Valuable Player of 3 tournaments. John Klassen, Coach of the Zodiacs says "Jason is an outstanding Basketball player and a key to our success this past season. He shows leadership and determination to help his team".Friesen is in his grade 12 year, and maintains a solid 78% academic average.

Tom Duerksen of the Carberry Cougar’s boy’s basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This 6’0" point guard, Averaged 19 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 5 steals in Zone 7 play this year. Duerksen was named an All-Star in the Glenboro, Boissevain, and Carberry tournaments as well as the "A" Provincial championship in which he led his team to a second place finish. Coach Michael Donais explains that "Tom was responsible for running our team, he called the defensive and offensive plays. Without him, we were not the same team."Duerksen, is in his grade 12 year and also was a member of the Senior Volleyball squad and the Senior Reach For The Top team, while maintaining a 86% academic average.

Parker Trojan’s boy’s basketball team in Thompson is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This grade 12 forward averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists this season in Zone 11 play. This past weekend Braun scored 42 points in one game to lead his team to the zone championship. "Kenny is a true team leader, he is out at every practice and is always willing to help out his younger teammates. He is successful in basketball because he is always working hard to improve his game, and is willing to learn new techniques" explains Trojan’s coach J.J. Langan.Braun also is a member of the Native Students Association at his school and maintains a solid 75% academic average. .

Colin Procyshyn of the Winnipegosis Lakers boy’s basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Procyshyn, a grade 12 student, averaged 16.6 points, 13.3 rebounds, 7.5 steals, 2.2 blocks, and 6.2 assists for the season. He also earned tournament all-star honors in the Boissevain, Goose Lake and Grandview tournaments. Procyshyn has led his team to a 20-5 record on the season. Bernie Dowhan, Coach of the Lakers explains that "Colin has the ability to take over a game at both ends of the court. He guards the other teams best player and is always up for the challenge. Basically, Colin is the heart and soul of our club".Procyshyn also participates in soccer, golf, curling, badminton and helps coach elementary school basketball, while maintaining a 75% academic average.

"Matt has become a dominant player and has the ability to elevate his game when the game is on the line," states coach Graham Collier, "He has a great attitude and commitment to the team and to the game of basketball."Evans has an 80% academic average in his studies and he also competes in cross country, volleyball, track and field and badminton.

Mike Totte, manager of the Trojans, describes Brad as a "an all round player on offence and defence, he’s a team leader who is unselfish with the puck."While in his grade 12 year, Hickman enjoys Badminton and golf while maintaining a "C" academic average.

Lorna Robertson, the coach of the Huskies, describes Rawlings as "an outstanding athlete who leads by example. Karen is an excellent rebounder at both ends, she works hard and never gives up." Rawlings, in her grade 12 year, enjoys volleyball, soccer, hockey and is the social representative of the school, while maintaining a B+ academic average.

As well, this 6’0" guard has led his team to the number one ranking in the "AAAA" category. "He’s one of the hardest working players on the court in any game" explains Coach Ritchie Jacobson, "as well, Tyler is probably the most unselfish player on our team."In his grade 12 year Kaktins also enjoys officiating basketball at the junior high level and is playing on the provincial basketball team, all while maintaining a 75% academic average.

She has been named Most Valuable Player in her home tournament and the Treherne tournament, leading her team, with an average of 28 points a game while shooting 50% from the 3point line. "Megan takes it upon herself to lead the team by example, she relishes in pressure situations" explains Coach Keith Forsyth.In her grade 12 year Latimer is the co-captain of both the basketball and volleyball teams. She also enjoys badminton, fastball and is a member of the student government, while maintaining a 81% academic average.

Jennifer Eckersley of the Vincent Massey Vikings girls volleyball team, in Brandon, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This 5’11" middle hitter is in grade 12 and she assisted her team to a silver medal at the recent "AAAA" Provincial High School Volleyball Championships. As well, during the regular season, her team won the Virden and Viking classic where she earned MVP honors, in both. As the season progressed, Eckersley led the team in kills. "Jenn has a wonderful work ethic and a tremendous desire to be the best player possible," states Coach Gary McKay. "Although quiet by nature, her actions on the court speak louder than words". Eckersley coaches middle years basketball, is the student council treasurer and a TADD committee member all while maintaining an 85% academic average.

Jennifer Lopes of the Neelin Spartans girls volleyball team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.As Co-captain, she led the spartans to the school’s first ever title in Volleyball. For her efforts, she was named the MVP of the championship. Lopes also earned a number of all-star honors at other tournaments during the regular season. "Jennifer’s leadership ability on the court has improved a great deal this season," according to Coach Daryle McCannell. "She has an extremely fine vertical that enables her to be one of the strongest defensive and offensive players on the volleyball court". Lopes also competes in basketball, is involved in the grad committee and maintains a 77% academic average.

Jocelyn Roy of the St. Pierre Cobras girls volleyball team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Captain of her team, this power hitter led her team to the "AA" girls Provincial title last weekend in Lorette. For her outstanding play, she was named MVP and the participants selected her for the Players Choice Award. "Jocelyn’s participation in school extra curricular activities is another indicator of her sense of leadership and good sportsmanship," according to Principal Paul Dupuis.

Roy also competes in hockey and badminton, while maintaining a high 80% academic average.

"Brooke has developed to be a real team player," according to Coach Shawna Siemens, "She has improved tremendously on and off the court, in her three years of high school".Loewen has an 80% academic average and also enjoys basketball. As well, she is involved in the student council and her church.

She averages 13 kills a game and serves at 96%. She has earned a all-star and MVP honors in tournament play this season. "Teri has a never give up attitude and is a very good communicator on the floor", according to Coach Paula Norman, "She can reach back from anywhere and hit the ball".Hofford has an 85% academic average while also participating in band, drama, badminton, snowboarding, beach volleyball and the environmental youth association.

As well, she was key in her teams tournament championship at Roseau Valley, last weekend. In her grade 12 year she also leads the team as co-captain. "Kendra is a very strong defensive player, both in blocking at the net and in the back row," according to Coach Sheldon Bouchard, "she is a real spark plug on the court, continually communicating and encouraging other players."Doerksen also competes in fastball, basketball and badminton while maintaining an "A" academic average. She also contributes to the sport by refereeing and coaching grade 7 and 8 volleyball.

Chris Regehr of the Mennonite Collegiate Blues boys volleyball team, of Gretna, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This grade 12 left side hitter stands at 6’2" and is captain of the Blues. He earned MVP honors at last weekend’s Blues home tournament, which they won. Regehr leads the team in kills and passing percentage. "Chris is extremely talented and consistent in his play," says Coach Darryl Loewen, "he is as aggressive toward wanting the ball regardless of a championship being on the line or when a match is well in hand."Regehr maintains a 97% academic average and also competes in soccer, hockey, basketball, and baseball. He still finds time to participate in the chamber choir and student council executive.

Jody Unrau of the Garden Valley Zodiacs girls soccer team, from Winkler, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Unrau led her team to the silver medal at last weekend’s Provincial Rural High School Soccer Championships. She scored 18 goals en route to a season record of 22-1. This grade 12 athlete is captain of her team and has earned 3 tournament MVP’s as well as being named to the all star team, last weekend. "Jody is an exceptionally talented athlete and is a very key player not only on our soccer team but all other teams on which she plays," according to Coaches Laura Miller and Della Friesen.Unrau maintains an 80% average and participates in volleyball, basketball and fastball. She also finds time to coach minor soccer and officiate extra curricular sports at the school.

Eddy Wiens of the Garden Valley Zodiacs boys soccer team, in Winkler, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. This grade 12 centre half back has scored 22 goals in 15 games thus far this season. For his efforts, he has earned three player of the game awards en route to his team winning both tournaments that they have competed in. As co-captain of his team, he has led the Zodiacs to an undefeated league record of seven wins. "Eddy has really responded to the role of co-captain in practices and games," says coach Lorne Warkentin, "he’s a very unselfish player and it shows because he has more assists than goals."Wiens is in his grade 12 year and maintains a "C" average.

Dara McLean of the Glenboro Panthers girls volleyball tam is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This middle hitter stands at 6'1" and recently earned MVP honors a the U of Winnipeg tournament and all-star at the St. Pierre tournament. "Dara has really matured into an excellent team leader and is a dominating player for our team. She is very committed to her sport and has a tremendous desire to be successful, " says Coach Rick Scott. In her grade 12 year, McLean is also the team captain.McLean also enjoys basketball, badminton, fastball, track & field and is the school's vice-president. As well, she maintains an 80% academic average.

Ian Lepp of the Elm Creek Cobras track & field team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This grade 12 athlete captured a silver in the 400m and gold in the 800m at his zone meet. At the provincial rural championships, he took home a silver medal. "Ian’s performance makes him the type of athlete we want our younger students to look up to and emulate", says Coach Neil Martin, "he is not one to give up and he challenged himself to do something he had never done before". At last weekend’s half mile marathon, he finished in the top 100 with a time of 1 hour 33 minutes.Lepp maintains a 90% academic average while participating in Cross Country, hockey and volleyball.

Sharon Drake of the Elton Sabres track & field team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Drake was a triple medallist in the senior girls category this past weekend at the McDonald’s Provincial Track & Field Championships. She captured gold in the 100m with a time of 12.94 and in the 400m with a time of 62.29. Drake also won silver in the 200m with a time of 25.76. She qualified for the Provincial Championships by winning gold in the 100m, 200m, and 400m, at the Provincial Rural Track & Field Championships held in Winkler. "Sharon is very motivated, she puts in 110% effort every practice", says Coach Jeff Maxwell, "she has been very positive and a leader for our track team". In her grade 11 year, Drake, maintains a 78% academic average while enjoying basketball and being an active member of her local church.

Ryan Loke of the R. D. Parker Trojans of Thompson track & field team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Loke was a triple gold medallist this past weekend at the Provincial Rural High School Track & Field Championships held in Winkler. He won gold in the 1500M with a time of 4:32.15, the 3000M with a time of 10:05.75, and was a member of the winning 4 X 100M relay with a time of 47.25. "Ryan is very dedicated giving 100% all the time", says Coach Raena Thompson, "he is also always willing to assist other athletes in training and competition". Loke's performance has qualified him for the McDonald's Provincial High School Track & Field Championships this weekend.In his grade 12 year, Loke, maintains an academic average of 80% and enjoys participating in soccer, volleyball, basketball, and badminton. He is also active on the school's grad and prom committees.

Tom Rinn of the Nellie McClung Stingers of Manitou baseball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Rinn a pitcher/third baseman for the Stingers led his team to their first Zone 6 Baseball Championship. In the Championship Game, Rinn pitched a complete seven inning game giving up only 4 hits while striking out 11. He also doubled and hit a two run triple to score the winning run. "Tom participates on several school teams and is considered to be one of the hardest workers at McClung", says Athletic Director Shawn Woloski, "he has shown tremendous leadership and is a great role model for the younger students". Rinn had a batting average of .462 and an ERA of 3.11 for the regular season.In his grade 12 year, Rinn, maintains an academic average of 79% and enjoys participating in volleyball, hockey, golf, and track & field. He is also an active member of the War Amps of Canada and is the Social Rep for the Student Council of the school.

Haley Rempel of the Portage Trotters Track & Field team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Rempel competes in the discus, shot put and long jump events. At the Neepawa and Stonewall Track & Field meets, she captured gold in the discus. Her best throw in the discus competition this year is 28.64 meters. "Haley works and works until she accomplishes what she sets out to accomplish", says Coach Mark Diboll, "we don’t have a more fierce competitor". In her grade 12 year, Rempel maintains an academic average of 92.4% while also participating in volleyball, basketball, badminton, fastball, and sitting on the student council.

"Jody is a great all around athlete", says Coach Murray Black, "She is a great athlete for all of our sport programs and more importantly a very good person."Jury Maintains a 76% academic and also led her team to a provincial high school basketball and soccer championship this year. As well, she compete in badminton and volleyball, while sitting on the student council and coaching the 7/8 basketball team.

Justin Sabourin of the St. Jean Baptiste Saints badminton team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Sabourin competing in mixed doubles with partner Christine Sabourin, won the consolation championship at the Provincial High School Badminton Championships, held in Brandon, this past weekend. This year Sabourin and his partner won gold at Carman and Brandon, silver at Winkler, and were semi-finalists at the Gimli tournament. "Justin is one of the hardest working athletes I have had the pleasure of coaching", says Coach Sheldon Bouchard, "he has spent countless hours over the past four years improving his skills". This grade 12 student maintains an academic average of 60% and participates in volleyball, curling and baseball. Sabourin was also a part of the organizing committee for the Provincial "A" Girls High School Volleyball Championship.

Paul Gaudet of the St. Claude Olympiens badminton team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Competing in men’s singles, Gaudet has won gold in all the competitions he as entered this year. He went undefeated to capture his 4th consecutive Zone 6 Championship, qualifying him for this years Provincial High School Badminton Championship talking place in Brandon this coming weekend. "Paul always has a positive attitude, he is very dedicated to the team and is easy to coach", states coach Gilbert Gaudet, "he plays one point at a time and focuses on the task at hand". At last years Provincial Championship Gaudet finished fourth.This grade 12 student maintains a 92% academic average and enjoys participating in basketball, volleyball, track and cross-country. Gaudet, also helps coach the grade 7 & 8 badminton team.

Semenuik has won gold at the Portage, College Jeanne Sauve, and Zone 12 Championship tournaments. Coach Denis Marinelli says, "Jody was at provincials last year and I wouldn’t be surprised to see her in the top three this year". This grade 12 student maintains an academic average of 91%, and participates on the St. Norbert volleyball, basketball, and softball teams.

"Leahette is a very, very talented individual in many areas of her life," says Coach Gerry Falk, "As well, she is very committed to activities in the school."Phillips excels in academics where she maintains a 90% average. She is president of the school as well as assists in teaching grade 7 phys’ed and coaches the grade 8 boys badminton team. She was also the captain of the basketball and soccer teams and enjoys cross country running and fastball.

John Friesen of the Garden Valley Zodiacs boy's basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Friesen is a 6'0" guard and captain for the Zodiacs.   He was named All-Star at the "AAA" Provincial Basketball Championships which they finished with a silver.  He averaged 27 points per game this season and also had two tournament MVP's to his credit.  His team placed second at the University of Winnipeg Post-Season tournament.  "John is a pleasure to coach because of his love for the game", says coach John Klassen.Friesen is a grade 12 student and maintains a 77% average.   He is involved in volleyball and soccer and is also a member of the music committee and grad committee.

Kyle Pettinger of the Arthur Meighen Squires boy's hockey team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Pettinger is a 5'7" goalie for the Squires. This season he played 1340 minutes, had a GAA of 3.40, and 14W - 5L record. In the Zone 4 playoff finals he had a GAA of 3.67 in three games. He led his team to the Zone 4 championship with an overall league record of 15-5-3-1. "Kyle is the backbone of the team", comments manager Russ Denton. "We relied on him a lot throughout the year. He played very solid during the playoffs and was a very big reason why we won the league".Pettinger is a grade 11 student and maintains an 80% average.

Amber Jeffrey of the Treherne Tigers girl's basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This 5'8" co-captain for the Tigers, plays both point guard and post positions. Jeffrey has been an all-star at 5 tournaments this season as well as the "A" Provincial Championships this past weekend, which her team won. She has been a part of all four consecutive Treherne Provincial Basketball Championships. This season she averaged 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 assist per game. "Amber is our floor general", says coach Jim Hoger. "She is one of the most coachable kids ever and a pleasure to work with".Jeffrey is a grade 12 student and maintains a 78% average. She also participates in volleyball, badminton and fastball, and is the Sports Rep for her school.

Adam Dupont of the Birtle Collegiate Falcons boy's hockey team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Dupont is assistant captain and center for the Falcons. This season he has scored 63 goals and had 61 assists in 43 games. At this past weekends provincials he scored 11 points in 3 games leading his team to a silver medal, and was named an all-star. "Adam is a quiet player who leads by example", says coach Mark Wakely. "The rest of the players can count on him in the crunch. He is always on the ice in crucial situations.Dupont is a grade 12 student and maintains an 82% average.

Tanya Jarvis of the Neepawa Tigers girl's basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.At 6'0", Jarvis is a co-captain and post player for the Tigers. She has averaged 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 steals per game. She received All-star at the Boissevain and St. John's Ravenscourt tournaments. Jarvis helped her team to win the Boissevain, Neepawa, and Hamiota tournaments this year. She has also led the team to the #1 ranking. "Tanya is an outstanding athlete who is very dedicated," says coach Kerri Hayhurst. "With her leadership skills, positive attitude and incredible work ethic, she will be successful at whatever she decides to do. It has been a privilege to coach her for four years".Jarvis is a grade 12 student and maintains a 76% average. She also plays volleyball and is active on the grad and banquet committee. She is a member of the 4-H club and coached junior high volleyball and basketball.

"Dale is the first guy to practice and the last one to leave," says coach Duane Whyte. "He leads by example and word of mouth".Dale is a grade 12 student and maintains an A average. Christine Little of the Hamiota Huskies girl's basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.At 5'6", Little is co-captain and point guard of the Huskies. In wins over Mordon and Teulon, 20 assists, 12 rebounds and 9 steals. Little led her team to the Championship at the Authur Meighen tournament and has also led them to a 4-2 record in the Brandon League. "Christine is a very unselfish player", says coach Lorna Robertson, "She calls the plays and starts the ball rolling. She is always in the thick of the play and comes up with many defensive rebounds, as well, she is a quiet leader". Christine is a grade 12 student and maintains a B+ average. She is the President of the Student Council and is also an accomplished horsewoman.

Garrett Sheasgreen of the Stonewall Rams boy's basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.At 6'3", Sheasgreen is a point guard and co-captain of the Rams. He was named MVP at the Garden Valley tournament and at his home tournament. Sheasgreen's season stats include 24 points, 2 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals per game. "Garrett has become a complete player this year", says coach Bruce Rutherford, "His quickness on defense and his ability to penetrate to the basket have been his main weapons. He is the catalyst that makes us successful."Sheasgreen is a grade 12 student and maintains a 76% average. He is also involved in cross-country and Track & Field. He is the assistant coach of the Junior Girls Basketball team and refs junior high basketball.

"Kellen has great passing and ball handling abilities and he is a very unselfish player", says coach Ron Dick. He was also involved on the boy's volleyball team.

She is averaging 35 points per game this season, including four 3 pointers per game. Lee was named all-star at the Treherne tournament and lead her team to win the Roblin pre-season tournament. "She is hardworking and a good leader on and off the court", says Coach Alan Wilson. "She is really good at helping out with the younger players on the team".Lee is a grade 12 student and maintains an 80% average. She also participates in volleyball, fastball, hockey, and soccer. Lee is also head of the Athletic Council and coaches the Middle Years basketball.

Marcel Vallotton of the Glenboro Panthers boy's basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.This 6'9 post player is captain for the Panthers and has led his team to a 7-1 record. Vallotton has received MVP honors at both the Glenboro and Rosenort tournaments. He is averaging 32 points per game and scored 51 points in one game, this season. Coach Rick Scott comments that "Marcel is a pleasure to coach. He is an extremely hard working student-athlete who has matured into a good leader and is respected by his peers".Vallotton is a grade 12 student with an 85% academic average. He also participates in volleyball and track & field. He is actively involved on the family farm and helps coach the junior varsity boys basketball team.

Kyle Gallant of the Major Pratt Trojans boy's hockey team in Russell is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.As captain, this 5’9" right winger for the Trojans also leads the Westman High School Hockey League in scoring. At his home tournament, Gallant scored 5 goals and assisted with 7 to win the tournament. Team Manager Mike Totte says, "He's just an all round responsible, reliable, great kid. He's a great leader for our team". Beyond playing the game, this grade 12 athlete also compiles the team statistics.Gallant also plays baseball, is a member of the Student Council and maintains a "B" average.

Ryan Frost of the Stonewall Rams boy's hockey team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.As a winger for the Rams, Frost led his team to the championship of the Brandon Cargill Tournament and was named tournament MVP. This Assistant Captain is among the top five scorers in the WHSHL. In 29 games overall, he has scored 28 goals and has 32 assists to his credit for a total of 60 points. "At 5'6", Ryan can be best described as a clone of Theo Fleury", says Ed Harvie. "Blessed with playing speed, excellent puck skills, and a feisty competitive spirit, Ryan excels in both ends of the rink".As a senior at Stonewall Collegiate, Frost maintains a 73% average and also participates in golf and baseball.

Chad Jacobson of the Neelin Spartans (Brandon) boy’s basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.Jacobson led the Spartans to the Championship of the Wesmen Classic. He scored 29 points in their semi-final victory and then contributed another 24 points in the championship game. Jacobson was named the tournament MVP. Coach Richie Jacobson states, "Chad has worked extremely hard to get where he has with basketball, he has a definite passion for the game". Jacobson was also selected to the all-star team at the Miles MacDonell tournament.In his grade 11 year, Jacobson maintains an academic average of 80%, is involved in officiating for middle years in the Brandon School Division, and is a minor official with Brandon University.

Cara Probetts of the St. Pierre Cobras girl’s volleyball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. This grade 12 student is a 6’1" middle hitter for the Cobras. She recently led her team to the Provincial "A" High School Volleyball Championship gold. Probetts was selected as an All-Star at the Championship. "Cara has matured as an athlete and become a dominate middle player", says Coach Dan Kalynchuk, "she has really stepped up her game for us this year when we needed her to". Probetts maintains an academic average of 63%, while participating in golf and badminton.

Bryan Salvador of the Crocus Plains Plainsmen boy’s volleyball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. Salvador is the Plainsmen co-captain and hits out of the power position. This past weekend he led his team to the Provincial "AAAA" High School Volleyball Championship gold where he was selected as the MVP. "Bryan is an exceptional athlete", states Assistant Coach Warren Hudym, "We’ve never actually measured his vertical, but is seems like he can leap through the roof". Salvador has been selected as MVP at the Trinity Western University and Vincent Massey tournaments, and received all-star honors at the St. Vital and Seven Oaks tournaments. In his grade 12 year, Salvador maintains a 77% academic average and participates in basketball.

Moose, co-captain and power hitter for the Trojans, averages 18 kills, 4 blocks and 2 digs per match. He is also the team’s best server. Moose was selected as an all-star at the Portage tournament. Coach Peter Conway states, "Pipon’s attitude and leadership ability make him our leader on and off the court, the younger players look up to him and he is always willing to help them out". Moose will be leading his team into the Provincial "AAA" High School Volleyball Championships this weekend in Dauphin as the number six seed. This grade 12 student maintains an academic average of 75% while also participating in basketball and track & field.

"Jana is the epitome of the term student athlete", says Coach Gary MacKay, "she leads by example on the volleyball court and in the classroom, she is a tremendous ambassador athletically and academically for Vincent Massey High School".In her grade 12 year, McMillan maintains an academic average of 94%, while also participating in basketball, badminton, and fastball. McMillan is the Social Convenor for the Student Council and volunteers for the Trinity United Church Bible Camp.

"Graydon has a tremendous positive attitude and leads by example both on and off the court", says Coach Don Dulder, "his tremendous vertical of 36", is also a definite asset". Voth is the Panther’s captain.Voth in his grade 12 year maintains an academic average of 80% while participating in hockey. He is also a member of the Grad Committee, his church youth group, and is a peer counselor.

Her Golden Bears are a "AAA" school who presently hold the number one ranking in the "AAAA" category. "Darlene has unbelievable reflexes and digs up everything", says coach Stephen Densmore, "She mixes up the offense well, is very smart and her sets are always on target. Darlene’s leadership has earned her team captain honors.Stephenson also participates in hockey and fastball, while maintaining an 83% academic average.

Jarrod Small of the Crocus Plains Plainsmen boy's volleyball team is this week's Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the week.This grade 12 middle blocker earned MVP honors at the recent Seven Oaks tournament where he earned MVP honors. He can jump for 11'6" which explains his kill percentage of 42% and he also boasts a passing ratio of 1.9. "Jarrod performed very strongly at the tournament, coming up with huge blocks at key moments in the game," says assistant coach Warren Hudym.Small also competes in basketball and was also named the Wesmen sport association athlete of the month. He is also a member of the travel band and maintains a 79% in his academics.

Jon Harms of the Garden Valley Zodiacs boy's soccer team in Winkler is this week's Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the week.This grade 12 left striker is co-captain of his team. He is averaging one goal per game and has led his team to one tournament championship where he was named MVP. "Jon is the toughest most intense player on my team, "says coach Lorne Warkentine."Harms also competes in Track and Field while averaging 65% in his academics.
