Tyler Ganes of the Nelson McIntyre Wolverines boys basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 athlete, led his team to a first place finish at last weekend’s Beausejour tournament. At the tournament, he scored 17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists per game for which he was named MVP. As captain of the Wolverines, this 5’10” small forward has led his team to a 7-0 start to this season. “Tyler leads our team by example through his dedication and work ethic,” states Coach Todd Tyler, “he has worked hard to improve his skills to a higher level.”

Ganes loves all sports and competes for the school in volleyball, soccer, track and field and intramurals. He also does well in his studies with an 88% academic average.

Marlee Bragg of the Lord Selkirk Royals girls volleyball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 athlete, assisted in her team’s performance to win the “AAAA” Boston Pizza high school Volleyball Championships. She led the way with 16 kills in the championship game and earned honors as the MTS Most Valuable Player. This grade 12 power hitter, stands at 5’11”, led the team as captain and in had the most kills. During the regular season she earned 2 MVP tournament honors and one all star award. “Marlee is a leader that is well respected by her teammates and is a dominant attacker in girls high school volleyball,” according to Coach Rick Scott.

Bragg maintains an 80% academic average, while competing in basketball, track and field and sits on the grad committee.

Justin Comte of the College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens boys volleyball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 athlete, assisted in his team’s performance on Tuesday night to win the “AAAA” Boston Pizza high school Volleyball Championships. Comte stands at 6’2” and plays the right side position. He earned one all star during the regular season. “Justin is only in his second year of volleyball and he started the season as a middle and moved over to right side,” quotes Coach Cam Johnson, “he has improved tremendously and played great in the semi’s and championship game of the provincials.”

Comte maintains an impressive 91% academic average and also participates in basketball.

Tracee Tesch of the Lord Selkirk Royals girls volleyball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

In her S4 year, this Royals co-captain is a 5’6” setter. She helped lead the Royals to the KPAC championship and a spot in the “AAAA” Boston Pizza high school Championship semi finals. Tesch has been named an all star in 5 tournaments and was selected as player of the game in the provincial quarter final. “Tracee is a key member of our team as she is the quarterback of our offence. She has developed into one of our team’s leaders and is a very good setter,” quotes Coach Rick Scott.

Tesch also competes in fastball and spends her summer organizing a summer day camp for kids.

Roman Naumiuk of the River East Kodiaks boys hockey team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

In his grade 12 year, this 5’10” right wing player has scored 17 points in 7 league games. In the pre season Clansman Cup tournament, Naumiuk scored 16 points in 5 games. “Roman has taken on a role as a leader on this team both on and off the ice since training camp started.” Quotes Coach Paul Stastuk, “He is playing with a high level of confidence this season.”

Naumiuk maintains a 75% academic average and plays soccer on the Kodiaks team.

Carli Chivers of the Glenlawn Lions girls volleyball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

In her grade 12 year, Chivers will lead her team into the conference semi finals tonight as the co-captain. With a kill percentage of 65%, this 5’10” power hitter has received two MVP’s and two all star honors during the regular season. “Carli is a great leader on and off the floor who we can always count on to come through,” explains Coaches Russ Harder and Heather Bradshaw, “she is a great all around player.”

Chivers also excels in academics with an 80% academic average

Chris Wowchuk of the Mennonite Brethren Hawks volleyball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.
Wowchuk is a 6’3” power hitter for the number one ranked Hawks. He received MVP honors at their home tournament this past weekend, that they won. He also led his team to victory at a recent tournament in Edmonton, where he was named MVP. “Chris’s teammates look up to him because he is a player that can be counted on to come through in the crunch.” Says Coach Brian Plett, “He really is a big game player who thrives on situations where there is a lot on the line. His best play usually occurs when the team is playing in a championship match.” He leads the team in service aces and kill percentage.

Evan Bowness of the Churchill Bulldogs football team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This 5’11” grade 12, running back, leads the league in touchdowns with 15 for 90 points. Bowness has broke some rushing records this season. In seven games, he has set a record in rushing with 1667 yards, most carries in a season with 212 and most carries in a game with 42. His accomplishments include two 300+ rushing games this season. “Evan’s strength is his unselfishness and his humble demeanor,” quotes Coach Kelsey McKay of his team captain, “he is a silent leader on the field and in the classroom, with a tremendous work ethic which speaks volumes to his teammates.”

Bowness is a member of the school’s concert and jazz bands and is an accomplished drummer and pianist. He maintains an 85% academic average and competes for the Bulldogs Rugby team

Jennifer Campbell of the St. Mary’s Academy Flames girls cross country running team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This senior varsity girls was the lead runner who helped her flames capture the provincial title at last Saturday’s Cross Country Running Championships in Killarney. She finished in seventh place, while her team was number one with 46 points. “She is a hard worker, dedicated and determined,” says Physical Education Department head Demetro Danyluk, “she is an excellent competitor who motivates her fellow students to achieve likewise.” Campbell also did well in her conference finishing third overall.

This grade 12 athlete also competes in track and field and soccer, while maintaining an 82% average in school. Campbell also coaches the schools junior girls cross country team while finding time to teach and volunteer for her church.

Greg Winiarz of the Transcona Titans boys volleyball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This middle player stands at 6’3” and has earned tournament all star honors at the Seven Oaks and University of Manitoba tournaments this season. “Greg is definitely a huge leader on the cout and has the ability to get the most out of his teammates,” quotes Coach Roger Labossiere.

Winiarz is a grade 11 student who competes in football and basketball while maintaining a 75% academic average.

Christian Sabourin of the College Louis Riel Voyageurs boys volleyball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

At only 5’8”, this power hitter has a kill percentage of 60% and serve receives at 2.5. In his grade 12 year, Sabourin is the captain of the voyageurs. “Chris is a positive leader, has a good attitude and is a very productive athlete,” quotes Coach Edgar Fouillard.

Sabourin also competes in all of the intramurals at schools and maintains a 77% academic average.

Andrew Harris of the Oak Park Raiders football team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

In a game last week, this fullback carried the ball for 332 yards and one touchdown and on defence, he played the position of corner and made two interceptions, all in one game. In his grade 12 year, this athlete is 5’10” and 170 lbs. Andrew is probably the most athletic running back in our league,” quotes Coach Stu Nixon, “he has tremendous balance and speed.”

Harris also competes for his school’s hockey team.

Caley Miskimmin of the Maples Marauders girls track and field team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

At last weekend’s McDonald’s high school track and field championships, this senior girl track athlete took home the gold in the 100m at 13.27 and the 200m in 26.88 seconds. At her Kildonan Peguis Athletic Conference championships, she broke the 100m record with a time of 11.80 seconds. Miskimmin also competed in the Marauders 4x100m and 4x400m teams. “Caley is very focused, has a lot of drive and a lot of determination,” says Coach Rae Leaden, “She is very explosive out of the blocks and is a great team athlete.

Miskimmin also on the cross-country, soccer, badminton teams as well as community ringette. She does this while maintaining an 80% academic average.

Corey Gallagher of the Glenlawn Lions boys’ track and field team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

At the recent South Central Athletic Conference meet, Gallagher won the 3000M, 1500M and placed 2nd in 800M for individual events. He was also a key member of winning Medley and 4X400 relay teams. At the last moment, he substituted for an injured teammate on the 4X100 relay team (an event he normally does not compete in) and helped that team to victory as well. “Corey is a fierce competitors. He wants to be at the top of his game all of the time. In track, he would rather be in a close race and have to work hard than run by himself.” quotes coaches Keith Dyck and Scott Wood.

This grade 11 student was also on the cross-country, volleyball and hockey teams..

Laura Morton of the Oak Park Raiders girls’ track and field team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Morton placed 3rd in the 80m hurdles with a 13.75 time and 2nd in the 100 m with a time of 13.72 during the zone 3 championships. She was a member of the first place 4x100 relay team and a member of the medley relay team. Her performances in all four events made her qualify for the McDonald’s championships. “Laura is an exceptional athlete. She is well respected by her peers, both for her ability and for her determination to succeed. Her enthusiasm and tenacity are motivating factors for the whole team. She is a pleasure to coach and we look forward to her continuing success in the future!” quotes coach Nancy Hill.

This grade 11 student is a member of the athletic committee of student council and participates in volleyball, basketball and soccer. She takes AP courses at school and maintains an 86% average.

Laura Meade of the Dakota Lancers girls’ rugby team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Meade is a second year rugby player and has led the Dakota Lancers girls’ rugby team to a 5-0 record. She has scored 10 tries and added 14 conversions, for almost half of the team’s total points. Her team is 3-0 in Manitoba High School Rugby Division #1. The Lancers went undefeated at the John Keogh Memorial Rugby Festival held in Brandon. “Laura is a very focused person. She makes good decisions and senses when to distribute the ball to supporting players,” quotes coach Colleen Horton.

This grade 10 maintains an 89% academic average while competing in handball and junior varsity volleyball teams and plays soccer.

Andrew Boumford of the College Jeanne-Sauve Olympiens boys’ badminton team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Boumford finished first place in the zone 2 championships and captured gold at the provincial championships last weekend in Portage la Prairie. “Andrew is a really nice player,” quotes Coach Gerald Cyr, “ he is really respectful of his opponents and is a very hard worker”.

This grade 11 athlete also competes in squash and volleyball, all while maintaining an A average.

Stephanie Tan of the Maples Collegiate badminton team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Tan and her partner, Patrick Eng finished first in mixed doubles in the Brandon, Gimli and Louis Riel tournaments. This season they won the KPAC championship and will be representing Maples Collegiate at the provincial tournament. “Stephanie is a very bright kid,” say Coaches Jeff Cieszecki and Rae Leaden, “She works very well with her partner and is always concentrated, on and off the court.”

This grade 12 athlete also competes in table tennis and track and field while maintaining a 90% academic average. In her spare time, she is on the grad council and a member of the scholarship committee.

Chantal DeSpiegelaere of the College Louis Riel girls badminton team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

DeSpiegelaere and her partner, Camille Paquette-Small finished first in girls doubles at the Brandon tournament and second at last weekend’s Gimli tournament. Earlier this season, she took bronze at their home tournament. “Chantal is very receptive to coaching,” says Coach Robert Stanners, “Her listening skills and capacity to analyze the game contribute to her constant improvement.”

This grade 12 athlete also competes in hockey and soccer while maintaining an 83% academic average. In her spare time, she coaches junior high badminton and is involved in their leadership program.

Erica Wiess of the Silver Heights Huskies girls badminton team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 athlete is undefeated in girls singles play in the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference and recently took home gold at the Carman tournament. “Erica has worked hard over the years to improve her skills,” quotes Coach Joey Lafrance, “her quiet determination and her will to win make Erica a fist class citizen in all the sports she competes in.”

Wiess also competes in hockey, golf and volleyball while maintaining an 85% academic average.

Justin Dobslaw of the College Beliveau Barracudas boys badminton team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 athlete finished in second place in the boys singles category this past weekend at the College Louis Riel tournament. “Justin has been involved in the badminton program since grade 7 and is a very hard worker,” according to Coach Hub Berube, “he has become a mentor and a leader for the younger players on the team.”

Dobslaw also excels in academics with a 95% academic average while competing on the volleyball, basketball and track teams.

Stacey Corfield of the Dakota Lancers girl’s hockey team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

Corfield was the starting goalie for the 2004 Winnipeg Womens High School Hockey League champs. She posted a 1.2 GAA including 20-7-3 record during the season. This Lancer captain capped off her season with a shutout in the league final. “Stacey is a very dedicated and focused athlete who never misses practices and is always available for extra help,” quotes Coach Dean Rigaux, “Her quiet confidence and high skill level inspire her teammates to over achieve and strive for personal excellence.”

Corfield is a member of the cross country, badminton and track teams.

Holly Kitchen of the Oak Park Raiders girl’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In grade 12, this Raiders captain also plays guard. She averages 15 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds per game. For her outstanding play, she was named MVP at the “AAAA” Provincial Championships this past weekend. She was also named MVP at the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference Championships, Raiders Classic, Miles MacDonell and The Wesmen Classic Tournaments. She was also named an all-star at the Piper Classic and Pembina Trails Tournaments. “ Holly is one of the best clutch players I have ever seen, she is at her best when the stakes are high,” quotes Coach Murray Brown “In the provincial final her will to win was on display, as time and again she did what was needed to help the team”.

Kitchen also competes softball and maintains an 80% academic average.

Rhodley Lozaga of the Garden City Fighting Gopers boy’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In grade 11, Lozaga is a point guard. He averages 19 points, 5 steals and 6 assists per game. Lozaga has been very instrumental in helping the team to tournament wins, securing first place ranking in the league and province and capturing the KPAC Championship title. He was named an All-Star at the St. Vital and Wesman Classic tournaments. “Rhodley is calm and composed running the offence and is a great shooter,” quotes Coach Phil Penner, “Rhodley has quick hands and great anticipation on defence.”

Lozaga also competes in volleyball, track and community basketball.

Leigh-Anne Legal-Young of the Dakota Lancers girl’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In grade 12, Legal-Young plays guard and is the team co-captain. She averages 14.8 points, 4 rebounds and 5 steals per game. Young has been very instrumental, leading her team to a season record of 25-8. She was named an All-Star at the St. Vital, Oak Park and St. Mary’s Tournaments. “On offense or defense Leigh-Anne can play with the best of them, up tempo, or half court game,” quotes coaches Ray Houssin and Randy Delavau, “Leigh-Anne shows leadership in different ways, by encouraging teammates in timeouts, by making a steal at the right moment or by getting a fast break layup to deflate the opposition.”

Legal-Young maintains an 80% academic average while competing in soccer, volleyball, handball, rugby and badminton. She is also enrolled in the Basketball Academy program at Dakota Collegiate which involves learning to work with young children, learn the basics of refereeing and how to teach skills.

Allison DeGroot of the Vincent Massey Trojans girl’s basketball team of Winnipeg is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of The Week.

In grade 12, DeGroot plays guard and has been playing on the varsity basketball team since grade 10. She averages 10.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 3.8 steals and 5.7 deflections per game. She was named an All-Star at the Pembina Trails Classic, St. Mary’s and Piper Classic Tournaments. During the St. Mary’s tournament she hit 5 for 8 from the field and 6 for 10 from the three-point line leading her team to victory in the semi-finals and the finals. “It’s amazing to watch her weave her way through the defense to get to the basket quote coaches Tara Kelly, John Fagan and Jen Parisian.” “She sees the floor well and is great at pulling off some tricky passes.

DeGroot maintains a 75% academic average. She is also involved in canvas for cancer and plays guitar.

Brittany Mackenzie of the Linden Christian Wings girl’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In grade 12, Mackenzie plays point guard. As the Wings co-captain, she led her team to victory in the Portage Tournament averaging 20 points per game and was named MVP. Mackenzie was also named All- Star at the Beausejour and Churchill Tournaments. “Brittany plays outstanding defense and can be counted on to lead the team at the offensive end of the floor.” quotes Coach John Friesen.

Mackenzie maintains a 91% academic average while competing in other sports such as volleyball, badminton, and track and field.

Kael Smith of the Glenlawn Lions boy’s varsity basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In grade 12, standing at 6’3’, Smith plays guard. As the Lion’s captain he averages 22 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists per game. Smith led his team to victory by hitting the game winning shot in both the John Taylor and St. Vital tournament. “Kael, has a great attitude and leadership skills that have helped the team to a 15-3 record in Manitoba play.” quotes Coach Minich Nowrang.

Smith maintains an 82% academic average.

Sam Breakenridge of the Oak Park Raiders girl’s varsity basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In grade 12, Breakenridge is a guard standing at 5’6’. She averages 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assits per game. She was named MVP at the Piper Classic Tournament and an All-Star at the Pembina Trails, Miles MacDonell and Raiders Classic Tournaments. “Sam has been outstanding at both ends of the floor,” quotes Coach Murray Brown “She has also provided great leadership on the floor.”

Breakenridge coaches community club basketball while maintaining an 80% academic average.

Myron Dean of the Garden City Fighting Gophers boy’s varsity basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In grade 12, standing at 6’4” Dean plays the forward position. As captain, he led his team to the number three ranking. He averages 22 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks per game and has earned MVP honors at the Wes men Classic Tournament and an All-Star honors at the St. Vital Tournament. “He is a great kid, fun-loving, has an engaging personality and is a very positive player.” quotes Coach Phil Penner “He can dominate the game at both ends of the court.”

Dean maintains an academic average of 60%.

Mike Pawlyshyn of the Fort Richmond Centurians boy’s varsity basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In grade 12, standing at 6’3” Pawlyshyn is a forward. As the captain, he led his team to victory in both the Daniel McIntyre and Pembina Trails tournaments. Mike averages 17 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists per games. “Mike is always pushing his teammates to work harder” quotes coach Regan Moses “Mike has clear goals, on and off the court and works hard to achieve his goals.”

Pawlyshyn is also involved in volleyball while maintaining a 95% academic average.

Allison Scharf of the Elmwood Giants girl’s varsity basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In her grade 12 year, standing at 5’6” Scharf plays guard. Per game she averages 23.2 points and 11 assists and leads the Giants as their captain. Scharf a great defensive player always includes her teammates and captured the MVP of the Elmwood Varsity Girl’s Basketball tournament. “Allison is successful because she plays as a team, she can score inside and out” quotes coach Rick Symonds “She has come to excel in the hard work areas of the game”.

Scharf a very busy student participates in various sports including cross country, volleyball, soccer, badminton and indoor track and field. When she is not participating in athletics she volunteers at the Health Sciences Center where she works with children. Scharf also takes part in the “Take me on Basketball Training Program”, the “District Basketball Program” and in “Elmwood Leadership”. On top of all her accomplishments she maintains an 84% academic average.

Jenny Ezirim of the Vincent Massey Trojans girl’s varsity basketball team in Winnipeg is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete Of The Week.

In her grade 12 year, Ezirim stands at 5’6” and plays guard. Per game she averages 20.4 points, 8.3 steals and 3 assist, and leads the Trojans as their captain. Jenny was named to the All Star Team and Top Defensive Player of the Piper Classic Tournament this past weekend in which their team finished second place. Ezirim was also named to the all-star Team in the Wesmen Classic Tournament that occurred two weeks ago. “ Jenny is a natural competitor” quotes coaches Tara Kelly and John Fagan “her intensity, quickness and speed make her a tough player to defend.”

This grade 12 athlete maintains an 80% academic average.

Cole Borland of the Oak Park Raiders boys basketball team, is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Borland led his Raiders to the silver medal at the Wesmen Classic over the Christmas Holidays and was named to the tournament all-star team. This 6’4” forward is averaging 20 points per game and his Raiders are presently ranked number two. “Cole is a really nice person and has a tremendous attitude,” quotes Coach Randy Kusano, “his strengths are his shooting on the perimeter and his rebounding.”

In his grade 12 year, Borland maintains a 78% academic average and participates in Volleyball and Baseball.
