Ken "Friar" Nicolson Award

The Manitoba Hockey Players Foundation is a sponsor of the Ken Friar Nicolson Award. This award is named in honor of long time CJOB radio Winnipeg Jets play-by-play broadcaster Ken Nicolson, who was a tremendous supporter of high school hockey and served on the organization committee for the first two provincial high school championships. The Hockey Players Foundation presents a $1,000 scholarship to a high school hockey player who is recgnized for a combination of excellence in athletics, academics, and community service

D'Arcy Bain / Fred Stevenson Award

The D'Arcy Bain / Fred Stevenson Award is sponsored by Winnipeg Physiotherapist D'Arcy Bain and named in honor of long time Winnipeg High School Hockey coach Fred Stevenson. This award consists of a $500 scholarship, and is awarded to another player who shows excellence in academics, athletics and citizenship.

Ed Belfour Award

The Ed Belfour Award is named in honor of NHL goalie, Ed Belfour. Belfour played high school hockey at Carman Collegiate for two and a half years and has played with NHL teams in Chicago, San Jose and Dallas. Ed is currently a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This award is presented to the most outstanding player in Manitoba High School Hockey.

Morris Glimcher Student Manager Award

This $400.00 scholarship is sponsored by MHSAA Executive Director Morris Glimcher and is presented annually to a student manager. Glimcher began his high school career as a basketball manager at St. John's High School in the early 70's.

Grey Cup Coach of the Year Award

The 1990 Grey Cup was held in Winnipeg for the first time and as a result, a profit was generated. Part of the profit was directed to a legacy for high school coaching. Each year the MHSAA selects its High School Coach of the Year and a $2,000 prize is awarded to this individual courtesy of the Grey Cup Legacy Fund.

This year’s recipient is Brian Plett from Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute. Brian has been coaching high school sports for the last 23 years in several sports including volleyball, golf and badminton. In volleyball, his teams have finished in the first or second each of the last four seasons and 7 of the last 8 years.

Frank L. McKinnon Award

The Frank L. McKinnon Award is presented to an outstanding contributor to high school atheltics. The award is named in honor of long time Principal of Carman Collegiate, Frank McKinnon who was a past Board member and Past President of the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association.

Jane Edstrom - Nelson McIntyre Collegiate

This year's winner is Jane Edstrom of Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. Jane has coached for a total of 27 years in a variety of sports including: cross country, basketball, badminton, Soccer and Track & Field.

Personal Highlights include having both athletes in the women's singles gold medal match for Provincial Badminton. The opportunity to coach my daughter to two consecutive provincial basketball titles.

The meaning of high school sport - Volunteering, convening, organizing, an opportunity for students to compete and grow outside the classroom but within an educational framework. High school sport represents competition, teamwork, fairplay and growth as a person.

Most memorable moments include: busing to Thompson for one of the first AAA basketball championships, chairing MHSAA Annual General Meetings and my first challenge of the chair? One of my most favorite experiences is shaking the hands of athletes competing at provincial championships.

Winnipeg Jets Alumni and Friends Hockey Scholarships

- Presented to one male and one female graduating high school hockey player – a $500.00 scholarship to be used towards post secondary education.

Criteria
- The criteria for this award would include a person’s on-ice skills and achievements, as well as off-ice activities including: leadership in school and community, participation in school and community activities.

- Mentorship of fellow/sister athletes and students.

- One letter of reference is required to accompany the application.

- Minimum academic average of 70%.

Applications will be evaluated by a committee made up of ex NHL players

The 2004 winners were Brenna Leary of Westmount School in Swan lake and David Christianson of Kelvin High school in Winnipeg.
