High School Athletes of the Year Announced
The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association with support from Jostens and Super 8 presented
the "Super 8-Super 8" male and female High School Athletes of the Year in each of the four school
classifications. Each of the winners will receive a watch courtesy of Super 8 Motels in Manitoba.
The Manitoba Jostens male and female High School Athletes of the Year will be selected from the

The Male winners are:
Jordan Hurton of Treherne Collegiate is the "A" male athlete of the year. Hurton participated in
Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Track and Field and was the Most Valuable Player, and
Players Choice Award at the Provincial "A" Volleyball Championships, which his team captured,
and was a member of the Volleyball graduating All Star team. He was also selected as an All Star
at the Provincial "A" Basketball Championships, which his Tigers also won. Most recently he was
chosen as a Credit Union Scholar/Athlete Award winner. In addition, Jordan is Student Council
President, sits on the Grad Committee, choir and many other school committees.
Bobby Neufeld of Goose Lake High School, in Roblin, is the "AA" male athlete of the year. Bobby
participates in Golf, Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball and Track. He was selected as the Most
Valuable Player at both the Provincial "AA" Volleyball and Basketball Championships, en-route to
gold medals at both. He was selected to numerous tournament All Star teams in both sports and is
Student Council Co-President and referees elementary school basketball. Bobby was selected "AA" Basketball Player of the Year by the Coaches Association for the second consecutive year, and was
the starting pitcher for his high school baseball team. He also maintains a 90% average while
keeping busy with school and community activities. He is a certified Volleyball and Softball official.
Michael Pankratz of Westgate Mennonite Collegiate is the "AAA" male high school athlete of the
year. Michael participates in Golf, Volleyball, Basketball and Badminton and was a MHSAA athlete
of the week, an "AAA" Volleyball All Star and member of the Graduating All Star team. In
basketball, he earned numerous MVP and All Star Awards and was Most Valuable Player at the"AAA" Championships, which his team won, and was a member of the All Manitoba team. Michael
maintains an 89% average and is secretary on the Student Council, member of the concert choir,
and concert band.
The "AAAA" High School Athlete of the year is Jordan Kussin of Kelvin High School. Jordon
participates in Golf, Basketball, Football, Indoor, and Outdoor Track and Field. He was basketball
captain and selected Most Valuable Player and All Star in a number of tournaments. He
participated in the Football Senior Bowl and qualified in the 100-meter, 200 meter and 4 x 100 relay
at Provincials. He was co-captain of the golf team at Kelvin as well. He is also a grade 9 mentor
and has begun to teach basketball at the Rady center in his free time.
The Female winners are:
The girls "A" athlete of the year is Amanda Gundrum of Westmount School in Swan Lake.
Amanda participates in Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Fastball, Track, Curling and Golf. She
was selected All Star and Most Valuable Player at a number of Basketball and Volleyball
tournaments throughout the year. She was Captain of her Basketball and Volleyball teams.
Amanda maintains a 93% average; finds time to be involved in Student Council, 4-H and the school
food drive. She captured three individual Gold Medals at the Rural Provincial Track and Field
Championships, and another three at the "Milk" Provincial Championship.
Julie Paradine of Major Pratt School in Russell, is the "AA" Athlete of the Year. Julie participated in
Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Fastball and was selected as the Most Valuable Player at the "AA" Girls High School Volleyball Championship, which her team captured as well as an All Star at
the Provincial Basketball Championships. She was a member of the graduating All Star in both
sports and was Zone 10 singles Badminton Champion. She pitched for Major Pratt in the Provincial
Fastball Championships and was selected as an All Star. Julie also contributes to Student Council
and is Co-Editor of the School Year Book while also being an active member in the schools drama
production.
Jenessa Karlowsky of Sanford Collegiate is the "AAA" recipient. She participates in Cross Country
Running, Volleyball, Basketball and Track and Field, and was selected to the graduating All Star
Teams in both team sports and received a number of MVP and All Star honors throughout the year.
She had many outstanding performances in the Zone 4 Track Meet including first in long jump and
second in hurdles and 800 meters. Janessa also participates in other sports including Beach
Volleyball, Dragon Boat Team, and Athletic Council while organizing a Volleyball Tournament that
helped raise money for Cancer Research.
The "AAAA" Athlete of the Year is Kristine Johnson of Kelvin High School. Kristine was Assistant
Captain of the Hockey Team and Co-Captain of the Volleyball Team. She was ranked as the
number five Volleyball Player in the Province, and is a graduating All Star in Volleyball and a League
All Star in Hockey. She is also on the Grad and Mentorship Committee at Kelvin. Kristine was
recognized with a number of Hockey Scholarships this year including the Alexander Josephson
Award and Winnipeg Jet's Alumni and Friends scholarship.
Each of the "Super 8-Super 8" will receive a watch courtesy of Super 8 Hotels.
The 2009 Jostens MHSAA Athletes of the Year are Julie Paradine of Major Pratt School in
Russell and Bobby Neufeld of Goose Lake High School in Roblin, Manitoba.
They will each receive an attractive ring from Jostens.

The 2007-2008 “Super 8 – Super 8” are as follows:
Robyn Small of Treherne Collegiate is the “A” Female Athlete of the Year. She was captain of her Volleyball team, and was selected as a graduating All-Star in both Basketball and Volleyball. She received the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Basketball Scholarship, a Canada Basketball Scholarship, and a Credit Unions Scholar/Athlete Award. Robyn also participates in Badminton, Fastpitch, Track & Field and Intramurals. In Basketball, Robyn received Provincial All-Star recognition in her team’s Silver Medal Performance. She is a lifeguard, Figure Skating Coach, Softball coach, Swim team coach and also referees Volleyball.
Kari Broadfoot of Warren Collegiate is the “AA” Female Athlete of the Year. Kari was selected captain of the Wildcats Basketball and Volleyball Teams and participated in various intramural sports. She received several tournament MVP and Player of the Game Awards in Volleyball. Kari was Student Council President, Youth In Philanthropy co-founder and Student voice liason for Student Council. She referees and coaches both volleyball and basketball, is involved with World Vision fundraiser.
Jessi Beth McCannell of Neelin High School in Brandon, is the “AAA” Female Athlete of the Year. Jesse was a member of the Provincial High School “AAA” Volleyball and Basketball Gold Medal Winning teams, where she was selected as the MVP in both championships. She was selected as a Graduating All-Star in both Volleyball and Basketball, is a Westman Basketball Coach, Clinician and Official as well as a Brandon School Division Official in Volleyball and Basketball.
Megan Cyr of Lord Selkirk Regional Secondary School is the “AAAA” Female Athlete of the Year. Megan was Captain of the Royals Volleyball and Basketball Teams. The Volleyball team was successful in capturing its fourth consecutive Provincial Championship and the Basketball Team advanced to the Final four. She was the #9 ranked Basketball Player, and the #1 ranked Volleyball player in the province. Megan was selected to the Graduating All-Star for both volleyball and basketball. She also participated in Track & Field (Long Jump, High Jump, 4 x 100m relay), and baseball. She was selected as the “AAAA” Provincial Volleyball MVP, and Mike Burchuk Award for the Top Female Volleyball Player. In the recent MILK Provincial Track & Field Championship, she participated in long jump and high jump.
John Swanepoel of Glenboro School is the “A” Male Athlete of the Year. John was selected MVP at the Provincial “A” High School Volleyball Championships, where he was also recognized with the Players Choice Award. He was also selected MVP at the “A” Basketball Provincial Championship. John was selected to both volleyball and basketball Graduating All-Star Teams, and was Captain of both teams as well. He was also Zone 6 Boys Singles Badminton Champion and participated in Track & Field.
Darwin Moman of Ashern Central School is the “AA” Male Athlete of the Year. Darwin participated in Volleyball, Baseball and Lacrosse. Captain of both the Volleyball and Baseball Teams, Darwin was also selected MVP at the Volleyball Provincial “AA” Championship and Ashern School’s Varsity Male Top Athlete. He is involved in Community hockey, baseball, and golf, has helped with the rodeo, and organized the volleyball tournament.
Sterling Nostedt of Neelin High School in Brandon, is the “AAA” Male Athlete of the Year. Sterling was captain of the Spartans Volleyball and Basketball, Provincial Championship winning teams. He was also the Players’ Choice Award recipient in Basketball and the Provincial MVP for Basketball. Sterling was selected to the Graduating All-Star team, and received the Garret Lee Sidor and Canada Basketball Scholarships. He was a member of the Grad Committee, coaches Mini Spartans, officiates middle years Volleyball and Basketball and is a Brandon School division Track Field Assistant.
Chris Voth of St. Paul’s High School, is the “AAAA” Male Athlete of the Year. Chris participates in Cross Country Running, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Track. He was the MVP of the “AAAA” High School Volleyball championship, which his Crusaders won and was the #1 ranked Player in the Coaches Poll. Chris was selected to the Volleyball Graduating All-Star Team, All Manitoba Team and received the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Volleyball Scholarship.

Dayna
Prost of Glenboro School is the "A" Female
Athlete of the Year. She is the Captain and Top Scorer on
her Basketball team and was selected as the MVP at the "A"
Basketball Provincials, which the Panthers won. Dayna was
also selected to the Graduating All-Star Team. In volleyball,
she was Team Captain, Zone and Provincial All-Star, and
the Player's Choice Award winner as well as being selected
to the Graduating All-Star Team. Dayna is also a member
of the Glenboro Panthers Fastball, Golf and Track &
Field Team. When she is not playing sports, Dayna volunteered
as the Student Council Secretary and served on the Grad
Committee.
Kristi
Hunter, of Goose Lake High School in Roblin, is the
"AA" Female Athlete of the Year. Kristi was captain
of the Goose Lake Raiders Volleyball team, leading her team
in kills, blocks and digs. She received 3 Player of the
Game Awards in a team bronze medal performance in the "AA"
Volleyball Provincials. Kristi also received the Dr. Dale
Iwanoczko Memorial Volleyball Scholarship, was ranked #4
in the Winnipeg Sun's Top Ten Player rankings, named to
the Graduating All-Star Team, the All Manitoba Team, selected
for the Mike Burchuk Award and named MHSAA Athlete of the
Week. In Basketball, she was named to the Graduating All-Star
Team and the All Manitoba Team, as well as finishing with
a bronze medal at the "AA" Basketball Provincials.
Kristi recently finished third in the senior girls high
jump at the Provincial Track & Field Championships.
Maureen
Falloon of St. Maurice School in Winnipeg is the "AAA"
Female Athlete of the Year. Maureen participates in Volleyball,
Soccer and Track & Field. She is captain of her volleyball
and soccer teams. Maureen has served as Student Council
Secretary, volunteered with the Grad Committee, is a member
of the drama club and participated in the talent show fundraiser
theatre. She also walked in the 2007 "Pro Life"
march.
Rosemary
Mills of Westwood Collegiate is the "AAAA"
Female Athlete of the Year. Rosemary was a member of the
Westwood Warriors volleyball, basketball and badminton teams.
Her volleyball team won the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference
and advanced to the Final Four at the "AAAA" Volleyball
Championship. As captain of the basketball team, she led
her team to the Provincial Quarter Finals, was selected
as a Graduating All-Star and was ranked #4 in the Winnipeg
Sun Top Ten Players. In badminton, she finished 2nd in her
conference and qualified for the Badminton Provincials.
Rosemary was Student Council President, Remembrance Day
Chair and Gym Riot Organizer.
Joshua
Gundrum of Westmount School Complex in Swan Lake is
the "A" Male Athlete of the Year. Joshua participates
in baseball, track & field, golf, volleyball, hockey
curling and badminton. He was captain of his volleyball
team, won the Provincial "AA" Hockey Championships,
participated in both the curling and badminton provincials.
Joshua received Westmount School Athlete of the Year recognition
and recently participated in the baseball and Track Provincials,
placing 3rd in triple jump. He is a member of Student Council,
belongs to the Phys Ed Leadership group and is an Intramural
coordinator, JV and Grade 7-8 Volleyball official, middle
years track and field official and Level 2 Hockey Manitoba
Referee.
Karl
Messinbird of Goose Lake High School in Roblin is the
"AA" Male Athlete of the Year. Karl participates
in golf, volleyball, badminton, baseball, basketball, and
track & field. He was volleyball team captain, "AA"
Volleyball Provincial All-Star and silver Medallist. As
captain of the basketball team, he was a gold medallist,
provincial All-Star, named to the Graduating All-Star Team
and the All-Manitoba Team. Karl also finished 2nd in the
zone track & field meet, qualifying for the provincial
championship. He is a member of the Student Council and
Drama club. He also officiates hockey, baseball and volleyball.
Brodie
Quinton of St. John's Ravenscourt School is the "AAA"
Male Athlete of the Year. Brodie participates in hockey,
soccer and track & field. He was captain and team MVP
of his hockey team and finished second in league scoring.
Brodie received the Alexander Josephson Memorial Hockey
Scholarship valued at $2,000.00 towards his post secondary
education. He was also captain of his soccer team and selected
as an MHSAA Athlete of the Week. Brodie volunteers with
the St. John's Ravenscourt Green Team, and organized the
Terry Fox Run.
Clancy
Doiron (pronounced Doe-rahn) of St. Paul's High School
is the "AAAA" Male Athlete of the Year. He participates
in track & field, football and basketball. Clancy was
the Crusaders Football captain and MVP. He was team captain
and MVP of his basketball team and selected to the graduating
All-Star Team. Clancy was also the John Potter/D'Arcy Bain
Sports Physiotherapy Award nominee. He is an intraumural
football coach, basketball player, and St. Paul's Idol Participant
and winner. Clancy volunteers at the YMCA and participates
in the Spring Men's Basketball League.
2005
- 2006 Super 8 - Super 8
Jodi
Schmidt of Elm Creek School is the "A" Female
Athlete of the Year. She participates in golf, cross-country,
volleyball, basketball, badminton and track & field.
Jodi was co-captain of the volleyball and basketball teams
and placed 4th at badminton provincials. She was selected
as MHSAA rural Athlete of the Week, and received All-Star
selections at both volleyball and basketball provincials.
She maintains a 92.7% academic average, earning Honour Roll
honours. Jodi also represented Central Region at the Manitoba
Winter Games and won Bronze in Badminton Singles competition.
She has participated in the Manitoba Half Marathon.
Becky
Young of Souris School is the "AA" Female
Athlete of the Year. Becky participates in volleyball, basketball,
badminton, rugby and beach volleyball. She received all-star
selections at three volleyball tournaments, MVP at another.
As captain, her volleyball team, they captured the silver
medal at provincials, where she was named an all star. Her
high school volleyball career concluded in the Graduating
All-Star game. Her basketball team earned a bronze medal
at provincials. Becky is also a Canada Games Volleyball
silver medallist.
Angella
Griffith of St. John's Ravenscourt School is the "AAA"
Female Athlete of the Year. Angella was captain of the varsity
volleyball and basketball teams, and also participated on
the soccer team. She was selected to the Manitoba Basketball
Coaches Association Women's All Manitoba Team, was an All-Star
at the basketball provincials and was selected as the Female
Athlete of the Year at St. John's Ravenscourt. Angella also
received the South Central Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete
Award. She also competed as a member of the 2005 Canada
Summer Games Provincial Basketball Team.
Tessa
Klassen of Fort Richmond Collegiate participated in
basketball, volleyball, track & field and handball.
She was co-captain of the basketball and volleyball teams
and was selected to the Provincial All-Star Team and All
Manitoban Teams for volleyball and basketball. Tessa was
ranked 2nd in the Sun Top Ten for Basketball and 7th for
volleyball. She also was selected to the graduating all-star
team for both sports as well as being a relay member in
the 4 x 100m relay team that set a divisional record.
Joshua Drews of Lundar School is the "A" Male
Athlete of the Year. He participates in volleyball, curling,
badminton and baseball. Joshua is captain of the baseball
team and was a All-Star pitcher in last year's provincial
championships. He is co-captain of the volleyball team and
was MVP of the school's badminton and volleyball teams.
Connor
Screpnek of Niverville Collegiate is the "AA"
winner is. Connor participates in soccer, volleyball and
basketball. He is captain of the soccer and basketball teams,
and was selected as a provincial All-Star for both soccer
and volleyball. His volleyball team won the "AA"
volleyball championships. In basketball, Connor has received
a BEST scholarship.
Jordan Nostedt of Neelin High School in Brandon is the
"AAA" winner is. Jordan was a starter on both
the volleyball and basketball teams, that advanced to the
provincial championships. He was selected as a Provincial
All-Star for both volleyball and basketball, as well as
to the Graduating All-Star teams. He was ranked number four
in the Winnipeg Sun top 10 players poll. In basketball,
Jordan received a BEST basketball scholarship, was selected
for the Manitoba Basketball Coaches Association Scholar
Athlete Award, including a selection to the All-Manitoban
team.
Stefan
Bouw of Mennonite Brethren Collegiate is the "AAAA"
winner. Stefan excels in both volleyball and basketball.
He was selected as the top male volleyball player in the
Winnipeg Sun's annual Top Ten Player Selections. As captain,
of the volleyball team, he led his team offensively and
defensively to the Final Four, where he was named to the
all star team. In basketball, Stefan led his Hawks to a
silver medal and was again named to the All-Star Team. He
averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game. Stefan also
competed in the graduating all star game for both of these
sports. He was a recipient of the Dr. Deal Iwanoczko Memorial
Volleyball Scholarship, and was part of the Gold Medal winning
Canada Games Volleyball team. Recently, Stefan was selected
as the MBCI Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive
year.
2004

Sacha
Bouchard of Ecole Regionale St. Jean Baptiste is the "A"
female athlete of the Year. She participates in volleyball
and badminton and was selected as an all-star at volleyball
provincials and received several all-star awards at various
tournaments. She was an MHSAA Athlete of the Week and was
selected as MVP at her school for volleyball. She was also
captain of her volleyball team.
Amy Walters of Morris School is the "AA" Female
Athlete of the Year. She participates in volleyball,
soccer, basketball and curling and maintains a 95% average.
She was selected all-star in several tournaments, was a
finalist for the outstanding Manitoba High School Volleyball
player and was a graduating Manitoba High School All-Star.
She is Student Council Secretary and involved with many
other activities at the high school.
The
2004-2005 other boys Super 8 winners are:
Miles
Johnson of Lundar School is the "A" Male Athlete
of the Year. He participates in baseball, volleyball,
badminton and basketball, and was the MVP catcher of the
2004 Provincial Baseball Championship, and captain of the
baseball and volleyball teams. He is currently in Jamestown
North Dakota at a baseball camp, as he will be attending
Jamestown University next year on a baseball scholarship.
The
"AA" winner is Kristian Andres of Goose Lake High
School in Roblin. Kristian participates in cross-country
running, volleyball, basketball, badminton, track and table
tennis. He was selected to the provincial "AA"
Volleyball All-Star team and captured the 1500m and 3000m
races at the Provincial Rural Track & Field Championships
and took 3rd spot in the 1500 at the McDonald's Provincial
Championships and top spot in the 3000.
The
"AAA" winner is Kyle VanCaeyzeele of St. Norbert
Collegiate. Kyle participates in volleyball, basketball,
badminton, soccer, track and golf. He is captain of both
the volleyball and basketball teams and was named MVP at
numerous tournaments in both sports. He was selected as
an All-Star at both the Provincial Basketball and Volleyball
Championships and was selected as a graduating all-star
and named to the Manitoba Basketball Coaches All Manitoba
Team.
