Ken "Friar" Nicolson Award (Application form)

The Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame is a sponsor of the Ken Friar Nicolson Award. This award is named in honor of long time CJOB radio Winnipeg Jets play-by-play broadcaster Ken Nicolson, who was a tremendous supporter of high school hockey and served on the organization committee for the first two provincial high school championships. Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame presents a $1,000 scholarship to a high school hockey player who is recgnized for a combination of excellence in athletics, academics, and community service


2010-2011 Recipient:

The Winner of the 2011 Ken “Friar” Nicolson Award is Andrew Miskiewicz of Stonewall Collegiate.  In addition to his leadership skills, Andrew is also a member of other school programs including the Remembrance Day Services, peer tutor, and referees.  He has great work habits, and a great attitude that earned him Stonewall Collegiate Student of the Year last year. Sami Jo Small Award

2010-2011 application form

Starting in 2008, the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame, has instituted a new scholarship to go to a female high school hockey player, named in honor of Sami-Jo Small.  Sami-Jo Small was a tremendous athlete in high school and represented Canada at 3 Olympic Games, in two of which, Team Canada won gold.  She was also a member of 5 World Championship winning teams for Canada and was MHSAA Athlete of the Year and Scholar/Athlete Award winner in 1994, while attending College Jeanne Sauve. The Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame presents the Sami Jo Small Award, a $1,000 scholarship to a female high school hockey player who is recognized for a combination of excellence in athletics, academics, and community service. 


2010-2011 Recipient:

Nikki Bell of Sanford Collegiate is the winner of the Sami-Jo Small Award.  Nikki, who averages 91%, was assistant captain, and her coaches states “she is there 110% of the time, and has contributed greatly over her four years”.  She is also an assistant coach for the JV Girls Basketball Team and is on the athletic council at the school.    She was the team’s leading goals and assist scorer. 2009-2010 Recipient:


Samantha Hink
was selected as tournament MVP and All Star on several occasions and took the zone 4 scoring title in league and playoffs with 65 points.  She scored 6 goals and had 5 assists in 4 playoff games.   She is also a multi sport athlete who is also involved with Student Council and other community activities. She helped lead the Tigers to four tournament victories.





Danielle DeGrave is Portage Collegiate Institute's goaltender, and with a 16-1-3 season, she had 8 shutouts and a goals against average of .75.  She was named rural athlete of the week and is a great role model to her teammates and fellow students.  Danielle holds an overall average in the mid 90's and plays soccer for her school.  Danielle is involved in Teens Against Drunk Driving, Grad Committee and MS Walk.

The 2008 recipient is Tawn Rellinger, of the Portage Collegiate Saints.

Tawn, captain of the Portage Collegiate Women's Hockey Team, was also the team's leading scorer and in the top 10 scorers in the league.  Last year, while living in Newfoundland, she played hockey at the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse.  She coaches soccer, and refs community hockey.  Tawn also has been involved in organizing grad events.  While maintaining a 93% academic average, she was selected Portage Collegiate Athlete of the Week after scoring 22 points in 14 games.  She was also selected as a league all-star.

D'Arcy Bain / Fred Stevenson Award (2010/2011 application form)

The D'Arcy Bain / Fred Stevenson Award is sponsored by Winnipeg Physiotherapist D'Arcy Bain and named in honor of long time Winnipeg High School Hockey coach Fred Stevenson. This award consists of a $500 scholarship, and is awarded to another player who shows excellence in academics, athletics and citizenship.


2010 - 2011 D'Arcy Bain / Fred Stevenson Award Winner

The D’Arcy Bain/Fred Stevenson Award goes to Addison Cullen of the Glenboro/Carberry Wildcats Hockey Team.   Addison finished the season with 27 points in 35 games and is a plus 5 who was only assessed 8 minutes in penalties.  He is one of the top defencemen, and on the powerplay first unit.   Addison is involved in almost every sport offered at Glenboro School, and is a member of the golf, volleyball and hockey teams this year and will also be part of the badminton, baseball and track teams.  He is co-president of the student council and was captain of the volleyball team and assistant captain on the hockey team.


2009 - 2010 D'Arcy Bain / Fred Stevenson Award Winner

The D’arcy Bain/Fred Stevenson Award, named in honor of retired hockey coach Fred Stevenson, and sponsored by Winnipeg Physiotherapist D’arcy Bain will see a $500.00 Scholarship going to Jacob Weidenhamer of Deloraine Collegiate.  Jacob is a multi sport athlete and was team captain for both his Volleyball and Hockey teams.  He was selected as a Wesman Hockey All Star and is a positive role model for his teammates.  He also plays high school baseball and is active in 4H


2008 - 2009 D'Arcy Bain / Fred Stevenson Award Winner

Braden Dick of the Neepawa Tigers, has served as team captain for 2008/2009 and was chosen for the Westman High School All Star Team.  He was chosen as "Athlete of the Week" in February 2009.   Braden also helps out on the Student Council, and helps at Can Skate as a volunteer skating coach.  Braden also participates in Track and Field, Soccer and Badminton, and maintains an 85% academic average.

Ed Belfour Award ~ Download Application Form

The Ed Belfour Award is named in honor of NHL goalie, Ed Belfour. Belfour played high school hockey at Carman Collegiate for two and a half years and has played with NHL teams in Chicago, San Jose and Dallas. Ed is currently a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This award is presented to the most outstanding player in Manitoba High School Hockey.

Kole Harvey of the Virden Collegiate Golden Bears.  Kole was captain of his team and scored 42 goals and 40 assists in 37 games.  He led the Westman High School Hockey League with 24 goals and 23 assists and recognized as the league top scorer.  Kole received games stars at each of the four tournaments they participated in, and was named most valuable player of the Westman High School Hockey League All-Star Game.   He was selected as Rural High School Athlete of the Week, and was ranked in the top ten high school player poll.  Kole also plays high school volleyball, football, soccer, badminton and track, and is an overall leader at school participating in the Winter Carnival, helping coach youth soccer, teaching swimming and looking after injured horses.  He also helps out with breakfast club at the local arena and leads by example.


2010 Ed Belfour Winner

Matt Geddes of the Provincial AAAA Champions Vincent Massey Trojans of Winnipeg has been selected as the Most Valuable Player in high school hockey winning the Ed Belfour Award. Geddes, who was team captain, was selected Most Valuable Player of the 2009-2010 Milk High School Hockey Provincial Championships and as well received MVP status at the Brandon Tournament as well as being selected to the Winnipeg High School League All Star Team.  He was fourth in scoring in the Winnipeg League and ranked in the top 10 coaches poll.  He scored 12 goals and 24 assists this year. 


2009 Ed Belfour Winner

The 2009 Ed Belfour winner is Curtis Gardham, Captain of the Birtle Falcons.  Curtis was the Westman Hockey League leading scorer with 35 goals and 30 assists in 32 games.  Curtis is also captain of his school soccer and golf teams.  After his high school season was completed, he was called up to play for the Neepawa Natives.  Curtis is an active member of the student council, and the school's anti-bullying program.  He is also a Peer helper and Member of the Grad Committee.

Andrew Brigden received the Ed Belfour award, presented by Frank McKinnon

Andrew Brigden, captain of the Souris Valley Vipers, led the team in scoring and was in the top ten in the league.  Andrew was selected as an All-Star and MVP at tournaments during the season.  He is Vice President of Student Council, on the Grad fundraising committee and also is co-captain of the rugby and football teams.  Andrew volunteers with the Harvest Food Bank and Coats for Kids, while maintaining a 85% academic Average. If a project in the community is charitable in nature, then Andrew will always be involved.  He displayed a "positive, no quit" attitude and was a leader for a very young team.

 

2007 Ed Belfour Award Winner

Cam Caners has had a phenomenal year as captain of the St. Paul’s Crusaders hockey team. He led the league in points for the 2007 playoffs, and was named Most Valuable Player in both City and Provincial Championships, which the Crusaders captured. He was also recognized as the MVP for Tournament of Champions and the Brandon Genesis Hockey Tournament. Cam was recently awarded the Friar Nicolson scholarship from the Hockey Player Foundation. He demonstrated his desire to improve every practice by working hard and leading by example. Caners was elected Class President and was also an active member of the student leadership and service group at school, all the while maintaining an academic average of 87.3 percent.

Morris Glimcher Student Manager Award

This $500.00 scholarship is sponsored by MHSAA Executive Director Morris Glimcher and is presented annually to a student manager. Glimcher began his high school career as a basketball manager at St. John's High School in the early 70's. Nomination Information

June 17, 2011…..Student Manager of the Year selected

Mark Iglesias of Kelvin High School has been selected as 2011 High School manager of the year. He worked as the manager of the Clippers Varsity Boys' Basketball team for the last two years. He was dedicated to the program putting in countless hours at practice, games, and at home by organizing the stats and practices. “His knowledge of the game was also very impressive and many times he acted as a fourth coach” stated Coach Chris Young. “Most importantly, he is one of the nicest young men I have ever been around. In a sporting world that can sometimes generate selfish attitudes, he was such a refreshing person to be around because he was always devoted entirely to the team. Although both in his grade eleven and grade twelve years he was cut from the team, he refused to be demoralized and he wanted to continue to be involved with the program “

Winnipeg Jets Alumni and Friends Hockey Scholarships

- Presented to one male and one female graduating high school hockey player – a $500.00 scholarship to be used towards post secondary education.

Criteria
- The criteria for this award would include a person’s on-ice skills and achievements, as well as off-ice activities including: leadership in school and community, participation in school and community activities.

- Mentorship of fellow/sister athletes and students.

- One letter of reference is required to accompany the application.

- Minimum academic average of 70%.

Applications will be evaluated by a committee made up of ex NHL players


2010-2011 Recipient:

Andrew Miskiewicz of the Stonewall Rams is the boy’s winner.  He was assistant captain of the team and also part of Stonewall’s Football Team.  In addition he maintains a 96% average and is member of the student leadership team and a peer tutor.  When he is not skating on the ice, he also prepares the ice, by driving the Zamboni at the local arena in Stony Mountain.  He has also mentored many younger officials as a referee. Amanda Pushka of the Oak Park Raiders Girls Hockey Team is this year’s recipient.  Amanda helped lead the Raiders to a fourth place finish in overall standings and to the league championship title this season.  She had goals against average of 1.19 during the playoffs.  In addition to hockey, Amanda was also captain of her varsity volleyball team.  Her overall record was 12 wins 3 losses and a tie, and had five shutouts, and also received the outstanding goaltender award at the Husky Classic Tournament.  She also played community hockey with the Assiniboine Park Rangers AA team. 2009-2010 Recipient:

The Winnipeg Jet’s Alumni and Friends-Winners this year include Jennifer Bell of Sanford Collegiate, and Noah Yagi of St. Paul’s High School. 

Yagi was the fourth leading scorer on the team, and is a right winger. He led the Crusaders to the City Championships this year.  He also is on Student Council and is Vice President of the Maroon and White Society. Noah was also a member of the City Championship Crusader Football team.

 

 


Jennifer Bell is captain of the Sanford Sabres team.  She was named to the All Star team for the past two seasons.  She is also very active in school and community activities and is a member of the School’s Athletic Council, and AAA Provincial Volleyball Champions as starting setter.  Jennifer led the Sabres with most points for a defenseman and was fourth in scoring.  She also coaches Volleyball for Middle School students.


2008-2009 Recipient:

Kristine Johnson of the Kelvin Clippers was selected as a league All-Star and also named top defenseman for Kelvin, as well as being awarded the Kelvin High School Coaches award for 2007 and 2008.   Kristine is involved in Volleyball and Track as well as being in the Kelvin Mentorship program, grade 9 girls Volleyball coach, Grad Committee, all while holding down a 95% and Honor Roll Distinction in several of her courses.

Cody East of the St. Paul's High School Crusaders is team captain, and was chosen as a WHSHL All-Star team and is a mentor for the rookie players.  He is a member of the Student Council as the Sport Representative.  He is the founding member of "Friend of Jo-Anne" team, walking in the MS Walk for the past three years.  Cody is also part of the organizing committee and a participant in the Breast Cancer Walk held at St. Paul's High School and participates in many of the fundraising activities held at the school.  He maintains an 84% academic average.

Garett Lee Sidor Memorial Scholarship Fund

Garett Lee Sidor, a student at Windsor Park Collegiate was an outstanding young student athlete. His life tragically ended on May 13, 2007. Garett participated in many sports, including hockey, volleyball and basketball. He was selected as an All-Star in the 2007 Provincial “AAA” Basketball Championships which his Windsor Park Royals captured. He was also named to the All Manitoba Team.

Garett’s friends and Family have set a scholarship to be awarded to a “AAA” high school basketball player who displays sportsmanship, leadership and outstanding ability. A scholarship in the amount of $500.00 will be awarded annually.

Nominations will be taken by the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association and scholarship funds will be administered through the Garett Lee Sidor Scholarship Fund at the Winnipeg Foundation. Contributions to this fund may be made by contacting the Winnipeg Foundation.

Easton Unsung Hero Award Information

The “Unsung Hero” Award goes to a player that is a hard working leader on a team.  He or she may not be the highest goal scorer, but displays leadership both on and off the ice.

The Easton “Unsung Hero” Award requires a letter of recommendation from the student’s school Principal.  This letter should outline not only the student’s athletic accomplishments but also outline their leadership abilities and scholastic achievements as well as any other school activities the student is involved in. 


2009-2010 Recipient:

The Easton “Unsung Hero” Award goes to Zach Kurtenbach of Deloraine Collegiate.  Zach, a grade 11 student, is one of the hardest working players on the Colts Hockey Team.  He suffers from a blood disorder and has Colitis, but does not let it stand in his way.  Zach never misses practice, and never uses his medical ailments as an excuse.  This goaltender provides a great deal of motivation for his team mates. 


2008 - 2009 Recipient

Allison Brinkworth from the St. James Collegiate Jimmies Women's Hockey team is a grade 11 student with an average of 80% and over 200 hours of volunteering in the school and community.  She was the captain of her high school team and a role model and positive voice for the coaches and one of the hardest working players on and off the ice. She continuously leads by example. She received a pair of Hockey Skates courtesy of Easton.
