Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Awards were presented.

Camilla Thorne-Tjomsland, of the College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens, is a 6’0” middle hitter who maintains a 90% academic average.  She led her team to 12-0 record in league this season culminating with a SCAC championship. Camilla was named an all-star at the St. Mary’s Tournament and Player of the Game at the Wesmen Tournament. She was also selected to the “AAAA” Volleyball Graduating All-Star team.  She has represented Manitoba twice in Volleyball, once at the Francophone Games and most recently this past summer as a member of the MVA 18U provincial team at the National Team Challenge Cup in Toronto. Throughout her career she has demonstrated a great deal of leadership on and off the court, especially coaching younger girls on school and club teams. In addition to her coaching, she is also a member of the school’s sport committee, helping plan school rallies and promoting school spirit. Camilla plans to continue her volleyball and is considering a career in healthcare.

Jenna Moffatt, of the Elton Sabres (Forrest, MB), is a 5’5” setter and maintains a 90% academic average.  She has been the starting setter for Elton since her grade 10 year, leading them to silver and bronze medals at the “AA” Provincials before winning the Championship this year in her final year.  At the provincials she was named player of the game and selected to the Championship All-Star team. She was named a Graduating All-Star. Her 17U Storm Club team, where she plays Libero, won the 2009 National Championship in Ottawa.  She also participates in basketball and fastball.  Away from the court, she is a member of the Safe Grad Committee and a Cancer Society Daffodil Campaign Organizer. Jenna has signed to play volleyball with Minot State next year and plans to pursue a degree in Social Work or Nursing.

Brett Young, captain of the Souris Sabres, led his team to their third consecutive undefeated season in league play. They were in five tournament finals, winning the Portage Invitational, where he was selected as MVP.  At the “AA” Provincials he was named player of the game four times and selected to the all-star team on route to claiming the silver medals. Additionally, this 6’3” leftside was named an all-star at the BU Invitational, was selected to the Zone 9 All-Star team, named a Graduating All-Star and was a honorable mention in the Winnipeg Sun Top 10.  Brett coaches the middle years volleyball team at his school and has officiated volleyball  at the JV and middle years level. He also participates in golf, hockey, track, badminton, and beach volleyball.  He has been a member of the MVA provincial team for the past three years.  Brett maintains a 82% academic average and is currently considering attending Brandon University next year to pursue a degree in Business Administration.

Devyn Plett, of the Mennonite Brethren Hawks, is a 6’2” setter. He was selected as the Winnipeg Sun Top 10 - #1 ranked player, Dennis Nord Award Winner, MVA Graduating All-Star, and to the Graduating All-Manitoba Team.  He led the Hawks to the “AAAA” Provincial Championship where he was named the Championship MVP.  During the season he was MVP at the U of W and Harry Ainley tournament, while picking up all-star recognition at the MBCI tournament. He has volunteered countless hours at MBCI coaching, scorekeeping and officiating for both basketball and volleyball.  He plans to play for the Trinity Western Spartans Volleyball team next year while pursuing a degree in either Education or Business.  Devyn currently maintains a 85% academic Average.

2008-2009 Award Winners

Kristine Johnson, of the Kelvin High School Clippers, is a 5'10" outside hitter.  She maintains a 95% academic average and plans to continue her volleyball career for the Thunderbirds at the University of British Columbia where she will study Human Kinetics and Biochemistry.   She lead her team to a City Championship final, and has been nominated as a Graduating All-Star as well as one of the top 10 players in the province.   Kristine has been named female athlete of the year at Kelvin for the last three years. She has been identified for both indoor and beach volleyball for the 2009 Canada Games Team.

Carleen Kruschel, of Edward Schreyer School (Beausejour) Barons, is a 5'10" left side setter and maintains a 90% academic average.  She led her team to defend both the division and zone banners and led them to the Provincials where she was named a Game Star.  Carleen also participates in Basketball and fastball at her school.  She sits on the Student Council and is the editor of the school's yearbook.  Carleen is looking forward to playing volleyball for the University of Winnipeg while studying in for pharmacy, psychology or Kinesiology.  Carleen has played for the provincial team over the past three summers,

Kevin Stevens, captain of the Dakota Lancers, helped lead his team to the provincial championship. This 6'3" left side was ranked the #1 player in the province, and named an All-Star or MVP at every tournament during this volleyball season.  Kevin maintains a 91% academic average while taking the most challenging of high school courses.  He has worked over 100 volunteer hours through coaching, clinics, and the marathon and has helped with the special needs programs at the school.  He looks forward to continue to play volleyball while attending either the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg or McMaster University to study Kinesiology and Education.

Jordan Hurton, of the Treherne Collegiate Tigers, was selected as the MVP at the Provincial "A" Volleyball championships and helped lead his team to the Gold Medal. Jordan maintains an 89% academic average. He is Student Council President, as well as belonging to the school choir, ensemble and is an accomplished performer.  He holds down many volunteer positions in the community, one of which is being a big brother to a foster child.  Jordan is looking forward to attending Brandon University where he will study Science Zoology and Chemistry to fulfill the pre-requisites to enter the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

2007-2008 Award Winners

The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association and the Manitoba Volleyball Association are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2007-2008 Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Volleyball Scholarships. The $750.00 scholarships are awarded annually in honour and memory of long time Manitoba volleyball player, Dale Iwanoczko.

Dale began his playing career for Lord Selkirk Regional High School and advanced to the University of Manitoba where he was named a five-time All-Canadian, and selected CIS Most Valuable Player in 1991.  He also played on Manitoba's Provincial and Canada Games Volleyball Teams.  Dale was Valedictorian, Governor General Award winner, and Athlete of the Year at Lord Selkirk High School.  He obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba and passed away at the age of thirty after succumbing to Hodgkin's disease, a battle he had fought for fourteen months.  A number of Dale's friends, have organized an annual golf tournament to raise funds for this scholarship named in his honour.

To be eligible for this award, a student must be proceeding to post-secondary education and have a minimum 65% academic average.  The individual must have proficiency in volleyball, while academic standing and community activities are also considered.

This year, the committee has chosen to present five awards.

The 2007-2008 Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Volleyball Scholarship winners are:

Joshua Friesen, of the Miami School Marlins, is a 6'4" middle player.  He maintains an 85.5% academic average and plans to continue his volleyball career at Providence College where he will study business. His team finished second in Zone 4 and Josh was named a Graduating High School All-Star. He is part of the Miami School student council, where he was elected Vice President. Joshua was also selected to the EMC youth group committee by his peers and has been a member for the past two years.

Nicole Clemons, of the Lord Selkirk Royals, helped her team capture the AAAA provincial title for the fourth consecutive year. She was named to the Provincial Tournament All-Star team and recognized as a High School Graduating All-Star. She is also actively involved in coaching and officiating club volleyball. She serves as the co-president of the Athletic Leadership Council and tutors math in her spare time. Nicole would like to play volleyball at the University level where she plans on becoming a high school teacher.

Chris Voth, captain of the St. Paul's Crusaders, who captured their second consecutive AAAA provincial championship. This 6'5" setter was named MVP of the finals and was voted #1 player in the province. Chris was named an All-Star at the University of Manitoba and Big Spike Tournaments, and MVP at the MBCI and University of Winnipeg Tournaments. He was also named a Graduating High School All-Star. Chris maintains a 92% academic average and is part of the school newspaper and leader for a freshman retreat. He hopes to pursue a career in engineering at the University of Manitoba.

Robyn Small, of the Treherne Collegiate Tigers, is a 5'6" left side. She was selected as a Graduating and Zone 6 All-Star. Robyn is part of the yearbook committee, co-editor of the school newspaper, peer helper, and student council treasurer. She also plays basketball, fastball, badminton, and figure skating where she not only competes but has been an instructor for the past 8 years. Robyn maintains a 96% academic average and hopes to continue her volleyball career at the University of Manitoba where she will study to become a criminologist or forensic scientist.

Dane Pischke, of the Fort Richmond Centurions, is a 6'5" left side. He was voted the #7 player in the province and was the recipient of the Dennis Nord Award. Dane was also named to the All Manitoba Team and a Graduating High School All-Star. He maintains a 93.5% academic average while volunteering at Golden Door Geriatric Center and takes part in the Terry Fox Run. Dane was recently accepted for early admission to the University of Manitoba where he hopes to be a member of the Bison Men's Volleyball Team. He plans to earn a Bachelor of Science which he will use towards a degree in medicine.

Chelsea Hudson, of the College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens, is a 5'11"" setter. She was chosen as captain of her team, selected as a graduating all-star and named to the Winnipeg Sun Top Ten players list. Chelsea was selected as MVP of Club Nationals in which her team captured gold. She has also been recognized as the MVA's Athlete of the Year in June 2006. Chelsea also maintains a 93% academic average and has been involved in peer tutoring for the past 3 years. Her involvement in volleyball has also included coaching for 2 years and refereeing for the last 4 years. Chelsea hopes to compete in volleyball at the CIS level, at the 2009 Canada Games and on the provincial team this summer. She also plans to continue coaching.

Emory Wells, of the Miles MacDonell Buckeyes, is a 6'1" setter. Emory was selected as an All-Star at the University of Winnipeg Tournament, MVP honours at the University of Manitoba Tournament as well as the All-Star honours at the "AAAA" Boston Pizza High School Volleyball Championships. His Buckeyes won the U of W, U of M, St. Vital, Big Spike and Mennonite Brethren tournaments in Manitoba, as well as the Western Canadian Challenge tournament in Alberta. Emory has been involved in teaching volleyball to inner city elementary school children through a drop in program.

Kristi Hunter, of the Goose Lake Angels in Roblin, is a 5'9" middle/left side player. Maintaining a 93.6% academic average, Kristi led her high school team to a bronze medal in this year's "AA" Provincial Volleyball Championships that her school also hosted. She was selected as an All-Star at the Vincent Massey Vikings and Crocus Plains tournaments as well as the Provincial Championships. Kristi has also been selected as a graduating all-star, named to the Winnipeg Sun's Top Ten, named to the All-Manitoba team, nominated for the Mike Burchuk Award and selected as an MHSAA Athlete of the Week. She is on Student Council and is Secretary for the Manitoba Charolais Youth Association. Kristi hopes to play volleyball at the university level and make the National Team.

Brendon Wrana, of the R. D. Parker Trojans, is a 6'2.5", middle player. He maintains a 94% academic average and was named the R.D. Parker Athlete of the Month in November. Brendon was the starting middle for the Under 17 Manitoba Provincial team that participated in the NTCC tournament in July. This year, his Trojans won the Zone 11 Championship and was ranked 5th for the "AAA" Provincial Volleyball Championships. Brendon is also a member of the Music Students Association, an Envirothon member and a volunteer peer tutor for Chemistry, Math, Physics and Biology. Brendon's volleyball goals include playing for the Under 18 Manitoba Provincial Team as well as in university.

The awards were presented at a media conference on January 26, 2007.

Ashley Voth, of the St. Mary’s Academy Flames, is a 6’2” middle hitter. She was selected as a an All-Star four times and MVP twice in high school competition this season. Ashley is the Flames’ captain and maintains an 86.5 % academic average. She was a co-recipient of the Mike Burchuk Award, as well as being selected as a member of the graduating All-Star Team. At school, she is a member of the St. Mary’s Athletic Council, and scorekeeps and referees local volleyball matches. This past summer, Ashley was a member of the silver medal Canada Games Team from Manitoba. She intends to play university volleyball and hopefully have an opportunity to play in future Olympic Games.

Matthew Hebert, of the College Regional Gabrielle Roy les Roys, in Ile des Chenes, is a 6’4” right side player. His “AA” school moved into the “AAA” category this year to host the Provincials, where they finished with a silver medal. For his efforts, he was named to the Provincial All-Star Team, capping off a season that included three All-Star and two MVP Awards. As well, Matthew played in the graduating All-Star Game and was the Dennis Nord Award recipient. Maintaining a 79% in school, he is in charge of the school music concert in May, helped coach the Junior Varsity team as well as the grade 7 & 8 volleyball team. Matthew intends to play university volleyball and some day make the national team.

Becky Young, of the Souris Sabres is a 5’11” setter. Maintaining an 86% academic average, Becky led her high school team to a silver medal in this year’s Provincial Championships and was also a member of the Canada Games silver medal team from Manitoba. During the regular high school season, she was selected as an All-Star four times, including one MVP and also played in the Graduating All-Star Game where she was named a co-recipient of the Mike Burchuk Award. In her high school, Becky also plays basketball, badminton, beach volleyball, track & field, is a member of the grad committee, while coaching and officiating middle years sports. Her future plans include playing volleyball at the university level.

Stefan Bouw, of the Mennonite Brethren Hawks, is a 6’7”, left and right side player who led his team to the Final Four in the “AAAA” High School Volleyball Championships. Stefan was a member of the Graduating All-Star Team, where he was named the MVP. As well, he was ranked as the #1 high school player in the Winnipeg Sun Top Ten Poll and played on Manitoba’s Canada Games team that won its first-ever gold medal. Stefan maintains a 75% average in his studies and is involved in his church’s youth program, including teaching Sunday school. Stefan’s future plans include playing for the University of the Manitoba and working hard to make first team CIS Canada West Rookie of the Year.
