Sport has taught me to lead by example. If I worked hard in practice, listened to the coaches and gave everything my all I know my teammates would do the same. While I cannot deny the importance of classroom education it provides the educational foundation necessary for contribution to society, I truly believe my High School education would not have been complete without sport. The 2007-2008 Credit Union Scholar Athlete/Award winners are:

Kirsten Clark of Hapnot Collegiate in Flin Flon
Karen Oswald of Oak Park High School
Dane Pischke of Fort Richmond Collegiate
Robyn Small of Treherne Collegiate
Kirsten Clark of Hapnot Collegiate in Flin Flon, participates in Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Badminton and Track, while maintaining a 97.3% academic average. Kirsten is Athletic Council President, a member of the Senior band and has helped to organize athletic Fundraisers.
Kirsten states, “Athletics are the other half of a healthy and valuable education…..High school athletics is so much more than an extracurricular activity. It is a chance to develop communication skills and teamwork. It is laying the foundation for dedication, punctuality and commitment. It is preparing the student body for the rest of their lives. Athletics teach students the important life skills necessary to function outside of high school. They provide a purpose and set goals for athletes in ways that other activities cannot.”
Karen Oswald of Oak Park High School was captain of the Basketball, Hockey, Cross Country Running and Track & Field teams, and was selected as a Graduating All-Star in Basketball and Hockey. This 97.3% average student finished sixth in the Cross Country Provincials and won gold in the 800 m at the recent Milk Track & Field Provincial Championship. Since Grade 10, I have been involved with school sports, playing hockey, basketball, soccer, track & field and cross country; I have been named Captain of many teams and a member of the Athletic Committee. To me however, the titles mean very little in comparison to the amount I have learned, the experiences I have had and the people I have met throughout these sports. I have learned leadership qualities, the value of teamwork and I have developed great respect for my school, teammates, coaches and sport as a whole.”
Dane Pischke of Fort Richmond Collegiate participates in Volleyball, Basketball and Track & Field. He maintains a 94% academic average, was awarded the Nikki Redekop Volleyball Scholarship, Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Volleyball Scholarship and was a Graduating All-Star. Dane states, “My high school sport experiences at Fort Richmond Collegiate were the most enjoyable and special times in the three years which I was enrolled there. I learned the basics of each of the sports that I played, and more importantly, the basics of life. The hard work I gave in the gym and on the court/field taught me to work hard in the classroom and has given me the confidence, personal development and leadership that I will need as I enter post-secondary education at the University of Manitoba, and later on in the working world.”
Robyn Small of Treherne Collegiate was selected as a Graduating All-Star in Basketball and Volleyball, and was a Provincial All-Star in the Basketball Provincials where her team won the silver medal. Out of school, she is a Lifeguard/swim instructor who finds time to coach figure skating and help Coach Fastpitch for girls 11 and under.
Robyn states, “High school sports have been a huge part of my life. I enjoy winning, but I know that success comes on many different levels. I have gained confidence by being a high school athlete, and I feel that I can do anything with hard work and belief in myself. Athletes rely on physical toughness, but they also need mental toughness and this is where academics and athletics meet. One of the most important lessons I have learned is to respect everyone: teammates, opposition, coaches, refs and yourself. I have worked with a variety of coaches and I know that a coach is a very special person. I became a coach because I looked up to my coaches and wanted to be a positive role model to younger students.”
These awards are sponsored by Manitoba’s Credit Unions in cooperation with the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association. The scholarships presented will be used to help offset tuition costs and other expenses of post secondary education.

is irrefutable and they are probably needed now more than
ever. With obesity on the rise, high school sport can be
one of the best tools to fight it, with not only people
being active when they are young, but carrying these habits
into their lives ahead
When I was playing in
front of over a thousand screaming fans in the provincial
high school volleyball championship I realized what our
volleyball team had done for our school community. Due to
our volleyball success this year, we enjoyed huge fan support.
We must have had half the school out cheering for a sport
that had never seen many fans in the past at St. Paul's.
It was a great feeling, and one that I will never forget.

Mallory

to become more organized to maintain a high academic standing
and remain successful in athletics. I have become more determined,
self-disciplined, confident and athletically skilled. I
have realized the importance of sportsmanship while continuing
to respect all coaches, officials and especially the opponents
..I
have discovered that athletics aren't only fun and games,
but are learning experiences that strengthen some areas
that are not always focused on in the classroom.
Andrew

volleyball, handball, and track & field. He is a graduating
volleyball all-star and winner of the Dennis Nord Award

has developed my goal setting skills, and more importantly,
given me an inner sense of achievement and satisfaction.
It is this sense of achievement that has instilled a greater
confidence within me in all areas of life. Athletics have
taught me to effectively deal with negative situations with
class and dignity, molding me into the young man I am today
..High
school sport is an essential aspect of the scholastic experience.
It offers the students a chance to develop long-lasting
friendships and involve them in a social activity."
Forty-three
nominations from across the province were submitted. Each
of the four recipients will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship

CIBC
Scholar/Athletes Announced
The
Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, in cooperation
with CIBC, is pleased to announce the winners of the 2004
CIBC Scholar Athlete Awards. These awards are presented
to four (4) graduating high school athletes who maintain
a minimum 85% average, and compete in at least two (2) inter-scholastic
athletic sports. Other criteria used to select the recipients
include community, school and citizenship activities.
Suzanne
Holatko, of Silver Heights Collegiate, is captain of
both her varsity volleyball and basketball teams. She received
the Carl Ridd basketball scholarship and was MVP at the
Silver Heights Basketball tournament. Her volleyball team
was also recognized with the Manitoba Hydro Sportsmanship
Award. Suzanne maintains an 89% average and scored a 100%
mark on the provincial pre-calculus exam. She referees basketball
and softball in the community and has judged at the Golden
Gate Science Fair.
Suzanne
states, "High school sports have given me many opportunities
over the past four years. They have taught me leadership
skills and responsibility
.Playing sports over the
years also kept me out of trouble. Instead of spending my
time watching television, I spend my time working out or
practicing for the big game
..One of the biggest influences
in high school sports are your coaches. They are the ones
who will teach you many skills, the ones who might get mad
at you, but always want the best for you."
Adam
Muzychuk, of St. Paul's High School, is a three-sport
athlete participating in football, rugby and hockey. Both
his football and hockey teams gained city champion status,
and as well Adam was awarded the Friar Nicholson hockey
scholarship for his outstanding abilities and citizenship
in high school hockey. Adam maintains a 95.6% average and
is class council sports rep, and participates in a variety
of other activities, both school and community.
Adam
states, "
.High school athletics are an integral
part of a well rounded education. Playing sports at the
high school level teaches the participants many lessons
that cannot be taught in the classroom. Such lessons include:
teamwork, the idea that the individual is part of the whole
and can reach greater heights by working effectively with
others, as well as teaching balance in daily life
.The
memories of playing high school sports with my friends will
always be with me and I know that some day, I will undoubtedly
become
one of those embarrassing dads that never stops telling
his children's friends about how great his school was at
sports and how much fun he had playing."
Holly
Kroeker, of Boissevain School, participates in volleyball,
basketball, badminton and fastball. Her volleyball team
made it to the provincial championship, where she was selected
as an all-star, while her basketball team captured the provincial
championship and she was named Most Valuable Player, and
selected as the Players' Choice Award winner. She was also
a member of the Graduating All-Star volleyball team and
her basketball team received an NBA Sportsmanship Award.
Holly maintains a 95% average and is involved with many
school committees including the grad decorating committee,
singing O'Canada at home games and student government. She
plays guitar and sings in a church group.
Holly
states, "High School athletics have been a huge benefit
to me because they have allowed me to get to know people
in my school that I would not have otherwise gotten to know.
You grow up so close to your teammates because you are with
them all the time. The friendships that I have built through
sports are something that I will never give up. School sports
has taught me how to organize my time and my school work.
It is hard to balance friends, school and sports and it
has taken self discipline to accomplish a working equation."
Ryan
Hudson, of Dakota Collegiate participates in volleyball,
hockey, basketball and handball. His Lancers captured the
Provincial "AAAA" Volleyball Championship where
he was selected as an All-Star. He was also selected to
the Graduating All-Star volleyball team and was runner up
for the MVA Player of the Year. He received the Dr. Dale
Iwanoczko Memorial scholarship award, was co-captain of
the Lancers Hockey team and received the Winnipeg Enterprises
Scholarship for hockey. Ryan maintains a 96% average and
is on the Student Council Sports Committee, volunteers at
church, Manitoba Marathon and other activities.
Ryan
states, "It has been said that what defines you as
a person is what you do and how you do it. High school sports
has molded my personality and allowed me to grow into the
person that I have become. High school sports truly goes
beyond just athletics as the countless life lessons that
I have learned from my experienced coaches will undoubtedly
stay with me for the rest of my life. I can truly say that
high school sport has left me a better person. I have learned
many values and life skills."
These
four individuals will receive a $500.00 scholarship from
CIBC as well as an attractive plaque. Presenting the awards
is Mike Selci, General Manager, CIBC Imperial Service Centre.
