Grey Cup Coach of the Year Award

The 1990 Grey Cup was held in Winnipeg for the first time and as a result, a profit was generated. Part of the profit was directed to a legacy for high school coaching. Each year the MHSAA selects its High School Coach of the Year and a $2,000 prize is awarded to this individual courtesy of the Grey Cup Legacy Fund. Grey Cup Legacy application

Don Dulder of Niverville Collegiate

The 2010 Grey Cup Legacy High School Coach of the Year Award was presented to Karl Wiebe of Westgate Mennonite Collegiate. Karl has been coaching for a total of 27 years, coaching Basketball, Badminton and Track. His teams captured the Provincial AAA Basketball Championships for the last two years and took third place in 2006. In addition to coaching Karl has been Soccer and Volleyball convenor in the zone. He literally has been the face of Westgate Athletics for the last 27 years. Karl is an outstanding leader and is very deserving of this recognition.

Frank L. McKinnon Award

The Frank L. McKinnon Award is presented to an outstanding contributor to high school atheltics. The award is named in honor of long time Principal of Carman Collegiate, Frank McKinnon who was a past Board member and Past President of the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association.

2009-10 Recipient

The Frank L. McKinnon Award named in honor of a past MHSAA president, and former Carman Collegiate Principal, Frank McKinnon, was presented to Jim Schreyer of Lord Selkirk Regional School.

Jim has been coaching for 30 years and his main sport is Volleyball. He has captured five AAAA Provincials, and as athletic director at Lord Selkirk has a very strong program. Jim was recognized as MHSAA Coach of the Year in 1994, and Manitoba Volleyball Association Coach of the Year on two occasions.

Jim coached the U of M Bison’s from 1997 to 2000 when Garth Pischke took a leave of absence and won a Gold Medal. Jim has hosted numerous Championships, sat on organizing and wildcard committees, and always provides technical information and support when required.
