Regan Lawrence of the Stonewall Rams fastpitch team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’7” pitcher led her team to the Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship, and captured MVP honours for the Championship. She pitch and won all 5 games for the Rams, posting three shut outs, one perfect game, 31 strike out, while allowing only 4 walks and 7 hits. At the plate she hit .438 for the tournament. Coach Deanna Easterbrook states, “She has great awareness of all situations. The team looks up to her as a leader. She is always very positive and encouraging to her teammates. She is a hard worker on and off the field and has a great dedication to the sport.”

Tyler Reiner of the William Morton Warriors baseball team in Gladstone is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’9” pitcher led the Warriors to their second consecutive Provincial Baseball Championship and earned all-star recognition along the way. Athletic Director Donovan Nemetchuk states, “Tyler is a great leader, leads by example but also says what he thinks, passionate, dedicated and hard working, great sense of humor and work ethic."

Reanne Wallcraft of the Nellie McClung Stingers fastpitch team in Manitou is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’4” pitcher led her team to their 2nd consecutive Zone 6 Championship. For the season she lead the team to an overall 18-2 record, while batting .390, and posting an 8-1 record on the mound, giving up only 5 walks in 42 innings. Coach Grant Caldwell states, “Reanne has had an outstanding career with the Stingers, not only in fastpitch, but volleyball as well. Despite being short in stature, Reanne has the heart of a champion and will do whatever it takes to be successful. She has spent countless hours in the gym the last few years, often by herself, working on making herself a better pitcher. We’re going to miss that competitive fire Reanne brings to the diamond and court each game.”

Misha Mudrak of the Duke of Marlborough Storm badminton team in Churchill is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’11” badminton player helped lead his school to their first ever banner in badminton, capturing the A/AA Zone 11 Badminton Championship, by winning silver in boys singles. Coach Tim Brock states, “It was nice to see Misha’s hard work and perseverance pay off. He has worked so hard at this, and finally after four years of dedication he has achieved the goal he set out to accomplish.”
In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 89%, while also participating in volleyball, and track & field.

Chris Elliott of the Reston Tigers badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’0” boys’ doubles player, along with his partner, Kelsey Elliott, won their second consecutive Zone 9 championship and followed that up by defending their boys’ doubles Provincial Title at the High School Provincial Championships held in Carman. Coach Kurtis Callander states, “Chris is one of the hardest working most dedicated players a coach could ever ask for. His desire to do his best in every sport and at every practice makes him the true leader that every coach wants.”

Rae Nakonechny of the Nellie McClung Stingers badminton team in Manitou is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’5” girl’s doubles player, along with her partner, Haley Nakonechny, went undefeated in zone play. They followed up that success by wining gold at the Provincial Badminton Championships that were held in Carman. Coach Pat Nakonechny states, “Rae is a well rounded, versatile athlete who has excelled in a variety of sports throughout her high school years. She has enjoyed the many friendships that have developed with her teammates.”
In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 92%, while also participating in volleyball, fastpitch, golf and curling.

Jordie Baird of the Rossburn Raiders badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’0” boys singles player won his third consecutive zone badminton championship. Coach Cory Chuchmuch states, “Jordie is a very coachable young man who has a ton of desire and dedication. I have yet to see an individual with the mental toughness that he has, and I have coached several sports and many teams over 17 years.”

Karine Sabourin of the St. Jean Saints badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’5” singles player has won the Mennonite Collegiate, Morris, Louis Riel, Carman, and Zone 4 South Regional titles, while also finishing 2nd at the Gimli tournament. Coach Sheldon Bouchard states, “Karine is a very gifted athlete with a strong drive to succeed. She has a very positive attitude in all aspects of her life leading her to be very successful in her athletic endeavors and beyond.”
In her grade 12 year she also participates in track & field and volleyball.

Brad Lillies of the Warren Wildcats basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’4” post was instrumental in his team’s success throughout the play-offs, leading them to a Zone 5 and Provincial AA Championship banner. He averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds a game throughout the regular season. In the zone 5 play downs he increased his averages to 25 points and 20 rebounds a game. Coach Cathy Pleskach states, “Brad stepped up his game tremendously in the play-offs. As teams tried to shut down other key players on our team he quietly racked up points and rebounds. It was a coach’s dream to see a player like Brad step up and help lead our team to the Provincial Championship.”

Andrew Brown of the Ross L. Gray Raiders basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’9” point guard led his team to the Provincial “A” Basketball title. Over the course of the season he averaged 15 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds per game. Coach Jared Baines states, I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Andrew the past three seasons. He’s a hard worker at practice and sets a great example for the younger kids on the team. His key three pointers and great leaderships skills will be greatly missed next season.”

Darris Hardern of the Killarney Raiders basketball & hockey team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’7” point guard led his team to a silver medal at the AA Basketball provincials a week after helping the Raiders hockey team claim silver at the AA Hockey provincials. At the basketball provincials he was named player of the game in the championship final and averaged 11 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals per game. For hockey as the Raiders goaltender he had an 11-3 record on the season and was named player of the game twice at Provincials. Coach Terry Beazley states, “Darris is a tenacious competitor, extremely fit and absolutely gets the most out of himself every time out. His quickness and competitive nature make him a standout in both sports. He is a tremendous young man who leads by example and we are very proud to call him a Raider.”

Steven Olson of the Warren Wildcats basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’6” center led his team to the Provincial AA Boys Basketball Championship Title. For the championship he averaged 25 points, 20 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game. For his efforts he was named the Championship MVP. Coach Cathy Pleskach states, “I have been able to work with this incredible young man for 4 seasons, watching him grow physically and mentally into a super basketball star and athlete. Steven is a superman among mere mortals on the court, but he will still always share every moment of glory with his teammates, because of his strength of character, that is just the kind of guy he is”.

Michael Mitchell of the Carberry Cougars Curling team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
Mitchell skipped his curling team to the Zone 7 Championship, qualifying them for the upcoming Provincial Championships in Dauphin, March 3-5. This will be his fourth consecutive trip to the Provincial Curling Championships, his second as skip. Coach Grant Calvert states, “I have had the pleasure of coaching Michael for many years now and have watched him develop from a beginner to now a team leader. He is a player that can remain calm under pressure and quietly get the job done. Michael has a very positive attitude and is well respected by all on and off the ice.”

Alex Warburton of the Sanford Sabres basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’2” post is averaging 28 points and 16 rebounds per game. Her season high for scoring in a game was 42 points. She was named to the tournament all-star team at the Wesmen and Sanford Classics. Coach Kelli Sinnock states, “I have had the pleasure of coaching Alex for the past 3 years, she has grown tremendously as a basketball player, a leader and as a person. She leads her team on and off the court and has an outstanding work ethic and character. Not only is she an excellent basketball player she exemplifies the true qualities of a student leader.”

Kole Harvey of the Virden Golden Bears hockey team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’0” winger led the Westmen High School Hockey League in scoring with 23 goals and 22 assists. He participated in the league all-star game where he was named MVP and is currently the Golden Bears leading scorer in the play-offs. Coach Mark Wakely states, “Kole works really hard in practice and games. He leads by example and is always asking if this would work or how he should react to a certain situation. He gives 100% effort for every shift.”\

Quinn Thacker of the Dauphin Clippers basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’0” guard/forward for the Clippers led his team to victory at the South Comes North tournament in Thompson. He scored 26 points in the final and was named the tournament MVP. He also earned all-star honors this year at the Swan Valley Tournament. Coach Trevor Beals states, “Quinn works very hard in practice, accepts nothing but the best from himself and makes those around him better. Quinn leads by example, is always encouraging and provides positive energy for the team.”

Shannon Mullin of the Pembina Tigers hockey team a co-op between Cartwright, Baldur and Nellie McClung is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
As assistant captain and centre for the Tigers she helped lead her team, by scoring 2 goals and adding 3 assists, to the championship of the 2nd Annual Pembina Lady Tigers Hockey Tournament. She is currently 6th overall in Zone 4 league scoring with 8 points. Coach Grant Caldwell states, “Shannon is the ultimate team player and a great leader and role model. Shannon will always willingly sacrifice personal statistics for the good of the team which is very rare. She is an extremely hard worker and is always willing to learn. Shannon is just a pleasure to coach!”

Alison Neufeld of the Goose Lake Angels basketball team from Roblin is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’7” captain and guard for the Angels is the team’s leading scorer and second on the team in rebounds. Her scoring season high is 31 points. She has led her team to two tournament championships this season and was named MVP at the Grandview tournament and an all-star at the Boissevain tournament. Coach Brant Neufeld states, “She has been an important part of the Angels basketball team with only 2 losses. Alison puts in the time, with morning practices to work on shooting, she leads by example and is very competitive.”

Jana Scott of the Boissevain Broncos basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’10” forward has lead her team to two tournament victories this year. She was named MVP at the Boissevain Invitational and an all-star at the Teulon Invitational. Coach Keith Forsyth states, “Jana is one of the kids that comes along every once in a while. She is the physical presence of our team and every player looks to her to lead them on and off the court. She is one of the most self-motivated players I have coached/taught. Her future plans are to become a General Practitioner and I have no doubt she will do that.”

Deann DeGraeve of the Portage Saints hockey team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’5” centre leads her team in scoring for the second consecutive year, with 14 goals tying the Saints season scoring record with 5 games left to play. In addition she has been named to the WWHSHL Elite All-Star team. Coach Jo-Anne Clark-Gillespie states, “Deann leads by example for her teammates on the ice. She is a hard worker in both ends of the ice, many times leading the rush into the offensive zone and other times being the first player back into her own zone. She has amazing speed and knowledge of the game and is a good leader on the ice.”

This 5’7” guard averaged 25.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game as she led her team to victory at their home tournament. She was selected the tournament MVP for her efforts. Coach James Ballantyne states, “Tamara leads our team by being positive and determined to succeed. Her work ethic and dedication to improve upon her abilities sets an excellent example for our team and this plays a big role in our success. Tamara is a player any coach would be lucky to have on their team.”

Jennifer Diboll of the Portage Saints volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’10” setter and captain for the Saints helped lead her team to their first ever WWAC play-off appearance. She set a new Saints season record with 75 service aces while also recording 79 kills, 76 blocks, 176 digs and a team leading kill percentage of 43.6%. Coach Robert Gamache states, “Jennifer’s statistics and accomplishments speak for themselves. However the real asset this girl brings to the team is how much better she makes her teammates. With a superb work ethic and excellent attitude, Jenn has led the team in so many ways and is a worthy recipient of this award.”

Adria Nernberg of the Major Pratt Trojans volleyball team from Russell is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’9” middle and captain for the Trojans led her team to 3 tournament victories and two tournament finals during the season, culminating in a bronze medal at the AA Provincial Volleyball Championships. During the provincial championship she earned player of the game honours, and was named a Provincial All-Star. Coach Cheri Totte states, “Adria is a strong leader on our team, who not only leads with her voice, but also by her play on the court. She is always positive and plays with a lot of heart. She may not be the biggest, over-powering middle out there, but she finds ways to put the ball on the floor”.

This 6’2” left side led his team to the Provincial ‘A’ Volleyball Championship held this past weekend in LaBroquerie. Travis received both all-star and MVP honors for his play at the championship. Coach Keith Braaksma states, “I have had the pleasure of coaching Travis for 3 years and his dedication has been unmatched. He leads by example and is always involved in the practices helping our younger players. He leads by example on the court and is always supporting teammates”.

Charley Sprenger of the Rivers Rams volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’6” Utility player rarely misses serves , is dependable on defence and is a successful hitter up front. In the Neelin tournament, she only missed 2 serves over 5 games and was by far the best overall player defensively and offensively. Charley has played every position for the rams and has led her team to a 2nd place finish at the Rams Invitational and Wesman (Crocus) tournaments this year. “Charley has always been a dependable person within our school and athletic programs. Her dedication to sports, academics, and citizenship are certainly recognized by her peers, coaches and teachers. Her excellent attitude, genuine personality, and commitment to her team and teammates are certainly a few of her strong suits,” states coach Mike Klassen.

This 6’1” left side captained his team to the Zone 8 Championship. During the season he was key in leading his team to a first place and three, second place finishes in tournament play. He leads his team in passing efficiency, kills, digs and aces. Coach Dave Sigvaldson states, “Dale is a player that every coach wishes to have. He has a great attitude and works hard in practice. Even as a grade 12 player, he is always looking to learn new things. On the floor he is a positive influence on his teammates and always leads by example”.

This 6’1” middle led his team to the championship at the Neelin Spartan Dig Classic. He led the team in blocks and kill efficiency for the tournament and was named the tournament MVP. Coach Michel Lavergne states, “Patrick’s Versatility has helped us improve as a team as he can attack from any position at the net. He is one of those players who is always calm under pressure, with the composure of a professional boxer. He leads with his actions, and when he speaks, he has the attention of all his teammates. His athleticism and his coachability has allowed him to develop as a dominant volleyball player.”

This 5’10” middle leads her team in kills and blocks. This past weekend she helped lead her team to victory at the Mavericks home tournament. Coach Lauren Edel states, “Mel’s positive attitude and determination motivates the entire team. Her work ethic and athleticism is amazing and she leads her team in practice and in 7:00 am workouts every week.”

This 5’6” midfielder captained his team to the 2010 Provincial High School Rural Soccer Championship this past weekend in Swan River. For his efforts and terrific playmaking throughout the tournament he was selected as the championship MVP. Coach Steve Rebizant states, “One of the most skillful soccer players in high school game right now. One of the most skillful players I have coached, great team leader, motivator, sportsman.”

Jeanine Froese of the Garden Valley Zodiacs of Winkler soccer team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’7” striker captained her team to the Zone 4 Soccer Championship, scoring a goal in the semi-finals and three more in the championship game. At this weekend’s Provincial Soccer Championship in Swan River she will be attempting to win her 4th straight title. She was named MVP of the soccer provincials the last two years. Coach Jo Voth states, “She makes everyone better. She blends exceptional physical talent, keen competitiveness and a spark for life that makes her team want to have as much fun as she is having.”

Megan Hawryluk of the Stonewall Rams soccer team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’7” midfielder for the Rams led her team to their first tournament victory in Minnedosa this past Saturday. She scored two goals in three games while also adding two additional goals in shootout victories over Dauphin and Minnedosa. Coach Charlie Cooke states, “Megan willed our team to victory, despite only having 5 regular starters, one substitute and players away for a variety of reasons. It was truly an amazing performance”.

Sullivan the captain of the boys golf team, lead his team to a 3rd place finish at the High School Golf Provincials, while also shooting the overall low round of the championship with a 3 over 73. Coach Al Patterson states, “You will never meet another young man that treats you with the respect he does, exceptional attitude, and class act both on and off the course. Just a great young man to have on the team.”

Kalie Apostle of the Gilbert Plains Trojans volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’8” setter and co-captain led her team to a second place finish at the Trojans home tournament. Kalie led her team at the tournament with a 98% serving percentage. Coach Steff Sochan states, “Her athleticism has lead her to make plays that many setters wouldn’t be able to. Coaches dream of having an athlete who demonstrates athleticism, leadership, sportsmanship, and game sense, all of which I see in Kalie Apostle.”
