Jordan Peters of the Garden Valley Zodiacs boys hockey team in Winkler, is
this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

"Jordan is an exceptional person, he has the ability to lead his peers on and off the ice," boasts Coach Brendan Neufeld, "he is a huge asset to theZodiacs hockey team, he brings elite leadership, experience, defensive and offensive talent and is a pleasure to coach." The Zodiacs assistant Captain, stands at 6'1" and plays the position of defence. Peters is sixth overall in league scoring, with 10 goals, 5 assists and a +13 plus/minus ratio.

In his S3 year, Peters has a 92% average in his studies and he also enjoys volleyball and track and field.

Braeden Gray of the Reston/Pierson boys hockey team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This hockey team is made up between a co-op agreement between the two schools, for which Gray is captain. He stands at 5’8” and plays in the center position. In 18 games thus far, he has 26 goals and 20 assists, including back-to-back hat tricks. “He is a true captain who is a positive role model both on and off the ice. Braeden has been our athlete of the week every week this season and is respected by his own teammates as well as his opposition,” summarizes Coach Greg Thompson.

In his grade 12 year, Gray maintains a 80% academic average and plays volleyball and badminton for the high school team.

Sam Murray of the Niverville Panthers boys volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Murray is the captain of the Panthers, which recently won the “AA” boys volleyball championships, for which he earned all star honors. At the provincials, this 6’3” right side hitter, had a 60% kill percentage, with a 41% kill efficiency, but his blocking was key to his team’s success. “Sam is a real team leader and team player and is a great captain, on and off the court, “ quotes Coach Don Dulder, “He has a great passion and love for the game.”

In his grade 12 year, Murray maintains a 78% academic average and also plays basketball for the high school team.

Mat Klassen of the Rosenort Red Hawks boys volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This 6’0” middle hitter is the captain of the Red Hawks. This past weekend at the “A” championships, his team captured the silver medal and Klassen was named to the all star team. He has a 2.18 serve reception and is 56% in kills. In his grade 12 year, he also led his team to the zone 4 title for the third consecutive year. “Mat has been a dominant player on the senior boys team for the past two seasons. His leadership, court presence and skill make him an invaluable part of our teams success.” Quotes Coach Jerry Waldner.

Klassen maintains an 87.6% academic average and helps out with the intramural program in the school.

Nadine Pohl of the Roseau Valley Raiders girls volleyball team in Dominion City, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This grade 12 setter is 5'4" tall and recently led her team to a berth in the "A" Provincial High School Volleyball Championships in Fisher Branch this weekend, through a wildcard victory. During the regular season, she earned all star honors in Morris and led her team to victory in their own zone tournament. "Nadine is an outstanding back row player with outstanding digging ability, outstanding effort to set the ball wherever it is passed. She also shows excellent leadership skills in rallying her team." Quotes Coach Keela Mateychuk.

Pohl also excels in school with a 95% average and competes in cross country, badminton, curling and track and field. She is involved in 4H, student council treasurer and helps coach and officiate younger students and athletes.

Julien Grenier of the Ecole Gabrielle Roy les Roys boys volleyball team in Iles des Chenes, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

In his grade 12 year, Gernier currently leads the team in passing and has one of the highest kill efficiencies earning him four tournament all stars. Standing at 6’2”, this left side athlete will be leading his team into this year’s “AAA” championships, which they are hosting on November 24-26. “Julien is a workhorse during games and practices. He is one of those players who craves physical training, repetition and challenges.” Quotes Coaches Michel Lavergne and Roger Vermette of their team Captain, “he is the anchor of this team and stays positive and encourages others not be afraid to better themselves.”

Grenier is the student council president, and also competes in basketball, badminton and golf while maintaining an 80% academic average.

Paige Stewart of the Morris Mavericks girls volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This middle player led her Mavericks to a silver medal at their home tournament last weekend. Very recently, she had 24 kills, 32 digs, 8 service aces and 9 blocks en route to championship at the Grunthal tournament. Stewart stands at 5’11” and is one of the team’s co-captains. “Paige leads the team in kills, kill efficiency, digs and blocks and has the ability to rally players around her,” exclaims Coach Fred Kelesnik, “She works well with the younger players, helping them raise their level of play.”

Stewart is in her grade 12 season, maintains an 88% academic average and competes on the schools soccer, basketball, badminton and fastball teams. She is also involved in the school environment team, Champions Mentoring Program, RCMP program, drama and choir. This busy girl also puts back into the school by coaching and officiating Junior High and Junior Varsity Volleyball.

Jodi Schmidt of the Elm Creek Cobras girls volleyball team, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

“Jodi is a very dedicated and hard working student athlete who competes in virtually every sport we offer and strives to excel in each one,” remarks Coaches Noel Hudson and James Ballantyne, “she recently has switched from setting to power and has focused on improving her skills.” In her S4 year, Schmidt stands at 5’7” and is also the team’s captain. She has led them to a second place finish in their home tournament and third place at the Immanuel Christian tournament, where she was named an all star.

Schmidt also competes in golf, basketball, badminton, track and field and finished seventh in her zone in cross country. She also excels in her studies with a 95% average and coaches grade 7 & 8 volleyball team and is the school’s yearbook editor.

Lori van den Ham of the Crocus Plains Plainsmen girls volleyball team, is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

"Lori is the only returning grade 12 starter to this year's team," quotes Coach Kevin Neufeld, "she is a great jumper, is extremely dedicated and is always willing to do what is best for the team." She stands at 5'10" and averaged 2.8 kills per set at last weekend's Saskatoon tournament that the Plainsmen won. She mostly plays on the right side position and is one of the team's leading blockers.

Van den Ham also helps coach and officiate middle years volleyball. She has also competed in track and field and has an academic average of 86%.

Zack Diboll of the Portage Trojans boys volleyball and soccer teams, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This grade 12 athlete stands at 6’3” and is the captain and setter of the volleyball team. This past weekend, he played goalie for the soccer team where his Trojans captured bronze at the Provincial Championships. Diboll led his team to a third place finish at their home volleyball tournament and was named an all star at an earlier tournament. At their home tournament, he had 11 kills, 13 blocks and 9 service aces. “Zack has an incredible desire to be the best volleyball player he can be”, exclaims his volleyball Coach, Robert Gamache, “he leads on the floor and off and is a pleasure to have as a student and an athlete.”

Diboll also competes in Basketball, Badminton, Cross Country Running and Track and Field, while finding time to maintain an 85% academic average. He is also involved in school life as the boys sports representative.

Kassandra Mueller of the Mennonite Collegiate Blues girls soccer team, in Gretna is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

In her grade 12 year, this forward has scored 9 goals in 4 games heading into the zone semi finals last week, where they finished second. “Kassandra is a quiet, coachable player with a terrific anticipation for the ball and a confident, assertive style of play,” says Coach We Hamm of the Blues Captain.

Mueller also competes in Volleyball, is involved in the schools chamber choir, musical theatre and student council social committee. She does all this while maintaining a 98% academic average.

Natalie Dreger of the Morris Mavericks girls Volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

As Co-captain of the Mavericks, Dreger led her team to a second place finish at last weekend’s Garden Valley tournament. At this tournament, this 5’9” middle scored 19 kills, 13 digs, 25 service aces and 4 blocks. “Natalie works very hard at getting her skills to a high level,” exclaims Coach Fred Kelesnik, “she is quite dominating in the front row and a very hard serving player.”

This grade 12 athlete maintains an 89% academic average and also enjoys soccer, fastball and track and field.

Matt Hebert of the Ecole/College regional Gabrielle-Roy Les Roys boys Volleyball team in Iles des Chenes, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Standing at 6’4”, Hebert plays the position of Right side and was named MVP in their home tournament last weekend, where they finished first. He also earned all star honors at the University of Winnipeg high school tournament on September 17, where his team finished 5th out of 20 teams. “Matt’s volleyball experience, leadership and dominant play on the court helps everyone around him elevate their game. His commitment and love for the game is exemplary,” quotes Coaches Roger Vermette and Michelle Lavergne.

This grade 12 athlete maintains an 85% academic average and also enjoys hockey and golf.

Courtney Rudolph of the Carman Cougars girl’s golf team is this high school season’s first Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This golfer led her Cougars to the zone 4 golf championship with an individual low score of 92, which was also the best score in the zone. Rudolph will lead her three teammates to the Provincial High School Golf Championships in Killarney this Friday. “Courtney was the only grade 12 on the team and encouraged her younger teammates to participate and do well in the competition,” declared Coach Neil Martin, “she participates in all nine sports that our school offers.”

In her grade 12 year, she participates in volleyball, basketball, badminton, curling, track and field, cross country, fastball and is presently the soccer team’s goalie. Rudolph maintains a 70% in her academics.

Tara Common of the Rivers Rams girls Track and Field team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

At last weekend’s McDonald’s Track and Field Championships, Common took home fourth in the Senior girls long jump with a leap of 5.15m and in the 200m. On June 3 & 4, at the Provincial Rural Track and Field Championships in Selkirk, she took home gold in the senior girls long jump at 5.04m and the 200m at 26.88 seconds. At these same championships, she also captured two silvers in the 100m at 13.03 seconds and the medley relay.

“Tara is a humble, natural athlete. She often spends time helping coach the younger track athletes, sharing her wealth of knowledge,” quotes Coach Wendy Radcliffe, “she constantly encourages her teammates to strive for personal excellence.”

This grade 12 student athlete maintains an 89% academic average and competes in Basketball and Soccer. She also coaches elementary track, junior high soccer and basketball, while officiating community soccer.

Eileen Pawliuk of the Hapnot Kopper Kweens girls Track and Field team in Flin Flon is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

At last weekend’s Provincial Rural Track and Field Championships in Selkirk, Pawliuk took home a gold medal in the 3000m with a time of 12.06 and a silver medal in the 1500m at 5:24. She also took home another silver in the school’s 4 x 400m relay team. “Eileen is a very dedicated athlete who has become a role model for other members of the team. Her effort and enthusiasm have been a huge reason for her success,” quotes Coach Steve Lytwyn.

This grade 12 student athlete maintains an 77% academic average and competes in Basketball, Soccer and Figure skating. In her school Pawliuk is a member of her student council.

Kristian Andres of the Goose Lake Raiders boys Track and Field team in Roblin is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

At the zone 8 championship meet, Andres ran the 3000m in 10:04 minutes, the 1500m in 4:43 minutes, 800m in 2:15 minutes and was a part of the Raiders 4x400m, all for gold medals. He has picked up eleven Rural and McDonald’s championship medals in his high school career and is hoping to add to this total at the Rural championships in Selkirk this Friday and Saturday. “Kristian possesses the true gift required to become a successful elite international athlete,” says Coach Darren Yakimishyn, “He has complete balance in all aspects of his life including family values.”

This grade 12 student/athlete maintains an 89% academic average and also was on the school’s volleyball, basketball, cross country and badminton teams. Andres is also involved in student council, volunteers at the local recycling depot and participates in the annual Terry Fox Run.

Ashton Beaupre of the Pointe des Chenes Cavaliers Track and Field team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This grade 12 senior boys athlete recently competed in his zone 13 track and field championships where he won first place in the high jump with 1.73m, javelin with a throw of 128.6 feet, and 3000m. He took home a fourth medal with a bronze in the 4 x 100m relay. At 6’3”, he also played on the Cavaliers volleyball, soccer, basketball, badminton and cross-country running teams. “Ashton is a gifted athlete who excels in every sport he participates in,” quotes Coach Dan Brunel, “He attends every practice with a positive attitude and will practice on his own whenever possible.”

Beaupre also excels in his academics with a 82% average

Sacha Bouchard of the St. Jean Baptiste Saints badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

At the recent Provincial High School Badminton Championships in Portage la Prairie, Bouchard finished fifth in the girls singles category. During the regular season, she won two tournaments and her zone 4 Championship. “Sacha is a tenacious competitor who rarely lets up. She has an excellent attitude and is very coachable.” Quotes father and Coach Sheldon Bouchard, “being the father and coach of an athlete can get dicy, but Sacha’s openness and willingness to learn has made the past four years unforgettable and she respects other players as well.”

This grade 12 athlete maintains a “B” academic average in her studies and also competes in volleyball, and ringette. Bouchard is a part of the school leadership program and currently organizes for K- grade 2 students.

Melanie Gueret of the St. Joachim Braves badminton team in LaBroquerie is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

At last weekend’s Provincial High School Badminton Championships in Portage la Prairie, Gueret won a bronze medal in girls singles action. During the regular season, she won two tournaments and her zone 13 Championship. “Melanie is an accomplished athlete,” quotes Coach Luc Bremault, “apart from her great athletic abilities, she consistently demonstrates great composure, great respect for her opponents, great perserverance and is a joy to coach.”

This grade 12 athlete maintains a 75% academic average in her studies and also competes in volleyball, basketball, golf and cross country running.

Amy Tycoles of the Reston Tigers badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Tycoles and her partner, won the zone 9 girls doubles championship for the third consecutive year. They will be competing this weekend in the provincial championships in Portage, in hopes of finishing better than their fifth place from last year. This grade 12 athlete was also the setter on their volleyball team that won the “A” championships back in November. “Amy has a great work ethic and commitment to the sports that she participates in. She has achieved a great deal of her success because of her desire to put forth her best possible effort at all times.”

Tycoles maintaines an 92% academic average in school and also competes in fastball, golf and track and field.

Melanie Soshycki of the Frontier Raiders badminton team in Cranberry Portage is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This grade 11 athlete won the girls singles gold medal at an invitational tournament in The Pas this past weekend. This win also follows a strong showing at the Thompson tournament a few weeks ago. “Melanie continues to balance her athletics with her academics,” quotes Coach Mick McMillan.

Soshycki also competes in volleyball, basketball and hockey while maintaining an 86% academic average. She also coaches young kids hockey and involved TADD.

Jeremy Hildebrand of the Garden Valley Zodiacs badminton team in Winkler is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

In boys doubles competition, Hildebrand and partner, Tyronne Wall took top spot in both their home and Carman tournament. They only have one loss on the season, thus far and are preparing for their zone 4 playoffs. In last year’s provincials, this boys doubles team placed fourth. “Jeremy is such a well rounded athlete, is extremely coachable and has a quick learning ability,” says Coach Derek Baschuk, “he is a player that any coach would love to have on a team and his teammates all look up to him.”

In his grade 12 season, Hildebrand also competed in volleyball and is active in his church youth organization. He also maintains a 78% academic average.

Kelvin Peters of the Portage Collegiate Trojans badminton team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This boys singles competitor had a record, last week, of 21-3, capping of the week with a 1st place finish in the Brandon tournament and a silver in his home tournament. “Kelvin is a very well conditioned athlete and his fitness level and mental toughness make him a very high level player,” states Coach Bruce McCallum, “he is a very highly respected member of our student body. He has a strong work ethic both in the gym and classroom and is an excellent example of a student athlete.”

Peters is in grade 11 and also competes in Cross Country Running and Track and Field. Off the court he maintains a 76% academic average.

Seve Backe of the Teulon Saints boy's basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Backe, a grade 12 student averaged 16 points and 13 assists this season. This 5'9" point guard led the Saints to the "AA" provincial championship by defeating the Ste. Anne Lynx by a score of 71-49. Backe was named an, All-Star at provincials and averaged 26 points per game throughout the championship. "Seve brought a big boost to the teams confidence and leadership, which was needed and definitely led to the teams success at provincials" says Coach Derek Cook.

Backe, the Co-captain of the basketball team is also a member of the schools track & field program. Off the court he maintains an 85% academic average.

Kyle Prevost of the Ross L. Gray Raiders boy’s basketball team in Sprague is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This grade 12 student recently led the Raiders to the “A” boys final, where the Charles Sinclair Hawks defeated them, by a score of 79-68. Prevost, a 6’3” guard averaged 18 points, 15 rebounds, and 6 assists per game this season. “Kyle has been our leader on and off the court for the past 3 years. His focus, work ethic and determination that he possesses are characteristics that every coach desires”, says Coach Jared Baines.

Prevost also participates in the schools track, cross-country and badminton programs. He maintains a 93% academic average.

Corey Laroque of the Ste. Anne Lynx boy’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Laroque, a grade 12 student was named MVP while leading the Lynx to victory in their own tournament. During the 4 games this 5’10” small forward averaged 15 points, 6 rebounds, 8.2 steals, and 3.2 assists per game. “Corey’s skills are excellent and he can score whenever he wants. However, he has bought into our system and plays as part of the team. I now find myself having to tell him to shoot the ball more because he wants to spread the ball around to his teammates”, states Coach Billy Isaac.

Laroque, is the co-captain of the team and maintains a 65% academic average.

Ryan Zadorozny of the Gilbert Plains Trojans boy’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Zadorozny, a 5’5” guard averaged 19 points and 8 steals a game this season. This grade 12 student is team captain, and also led the Zone 8 playoffs in scoring by averaging 17 points a game. “He is one of the hardest working players I have coached. He has strong desire and work ethic and provides an excellent example for our younger players,” says Coach Trevor Beals.

Off the court, Zadorozny participates in volleyball and badminton, as well as being student council president. He maintains an 85% average in the classroom.

Shayne Korotash of the Rorketon Rockets boy’s curling team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

This grade 12 student, who plays skip, recently led them to five consecutive victories in the Zone 8 play downs to qualify for provincials, this weekend in Souris and Wawanesa. “Shayne is a quiet, lead by example type of player. When something needs to said, he really steps it up. This type of level-headedness makes him perfect to skip a curling team for those pressure situations,” says Coach Dave Sigvaldason.

Off the ice, Korotash participates in volleyball, badminton, golf and track. He is a member of the schools student council and grad committee. In the classroom Korotash maintains a 88% academic average.

Cory Spratt of the Portage Pats girl’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Spratt is a 5’4” guard, who recently led her team to the championship at the Arthur Meighen tournament. In doing so, Spratt averaged 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 assists per game. This grade 12 student scored a team high 25 points in their semi-final victory against the Garden Valley Zodiacs. “Cory is a very dedicated student athlete. She works extremely hard every game and practice. She leads vocally and by example. She is very encouraging to the other players and maintains a positive outlook at all times,” says Coach Rob Gamache.

Off the court, Spratt competes in Clogging – A community dance program and also spends time at elementary schools in Portage, while student teaching as part of her schools leadership program. Spratt also maintains an 80% academic average.

Gillian Duerksen of the Carberry Cougars girl’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Duerksen, a grade 12 student averages 14 points and 8 rebounds per game, and also leads the team in assists and rebounds. The 5’9” point guard has been named a tournament all-star at the Portage and Oak Park events. Recently, Duerksen led the Cougars to victory at their own tournament by defeating Boissevain 61-59. “Gillian’s leadership skills are second to none. She is one of the team’s co-captains and always encourages her teammates to do their best. Gillian is very coachable and is always willing to do whatever it takes to help the team be successful,” says Coach Marty Jordan.

Duerksen also participates in volleyball and track & field. In the classroom she maintains an 84% academic average.

Ashley Baker of the Strathclair Skyhawks girl's basketball team is this week's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Baker a 5'11" shooting guard has averaged 17.1 points, while topping the 20-point barrier on 5 occasions this season. As captain of her team, this grade 12 student has led the Skyhawks to a 15-2 record. "Over the course of the season, Ashley has evolved into a player who leads both by example and by encouragement of her teammates," states Coach Stephen David.

Off the court, Baker is involved in student council and local community youth groups. In the classroom Baker currently leads her class with a 90% academic average

Dustin Pugh of the Boissevain Broncos hockey team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Pugh, a grade 12 student, is a 6’1” forward who scored 3 goals in the Broncos championship game against Minnedosa at the Major Pratt tournament earlier this year. In total, Pugh and linemates put up 17 points, with Dustin chipping in on 8 of them. “Dustin is very coachable athlete. He has developed into one of the top forwards in the Westman High School Hockey league, as he is a powerful skater and has a heavy shot,” states Coach Brad White.

Pugh also plays baseball and participates in senior youth group with the Manitoba Church in Boissevain. Pugh maintains an 88% academic average in the classroom.

Trevor Chartrand of the St. Laurent Hawks boy’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Chartrand is a grade 12 student who has been averaging 20 points, as well as 14 rebounds per game this season. As captain, this 6’1” post has led the Hawks to a record of 4-2. “Trevor shows a lot of leadership on and off the court. He gets the team fired up every game, while being tenacious on the court,” says coach Mark Kristalovich.

Chartrand participates in track & field, soccer, and volleyball and still finds time to coach the JV boy’s basketball team. Trevor also maintains an 82% average in the classroom.

Justin Hurd of the Teulon Saints boy’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Hurd is a 6’2” guard/post who has scored 30 or more points in all but 3 games this season, including 42 of 49 points in the Swan River final. This grade 12 athlete earned MVP honors in the Swan River tournament and was also a tournament all-star in the Niverville event. “Justin is basically unstoppable in a one-on-one situation, most teams have to play zone defense just to stop him” says coach Derek Crook.

Along with being captain of the basketball team, Justin also plays volleyball and maintains an 85% average in the classroom.

Stephanie Campbell of the Boissevain Broncos girl’s basketball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the week.

Stephanie is a grade 12 student who is co-captain of the team was just named MVP at the Bronco Invitational Tournament this weekend. This 5’8” wing averaged 16 points per game leading the Bronco’s to victory in their annual tournament, scoring 22 points in the final, while grabbing 14 rebounds. “Stephanie is an excellent captain. Jim Mourant of the Ecole Pointe des Chenes Cavaliers boys basketball team in Ste. Anne, is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week.

Mourant is a 5’9” forward who is averaging more than 25 points per game. “Jim’s leadership helps him motivate and encourage his teammates at practices and during games,” says Coach Phil Carter and Physical Education teacher Dan Brunel of the team’s captain, “he plays every game to the best of his ability.”

This grade 12 athlete competes in soccer and track and field, while maintaining a 77% academic average. He also coaches the school’s JV girls basketball team.
