Jenna Cook of the Major Pratt Trojans basketball team in Russell is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’1” forward led her team to the finals of their home tournament on the weekend averaging 15.5 points, 11 rebounds and 6.5 blocks per game. Over the season she has averaged 14.4 points, 8 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks per game. Coach Gord Nixon states, “One of only four grade twelve’s on the roster, Jenna is not only an inspiration on the court, she is a great leader for our grade nine and ten players. This weekend, she sprained her ankle in our second game, had it taped and continued to play at 100%. Probably her biggest contribution this weekend was at the defensive end of the court, rebounding and making the outlet pass”.

Hailey Tonn of the William Morton Warriors basketball team in Gladstone is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’8” guard was selected as an all-star at the Elm Creek Tournament. She is averaging 15 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals per game this season. Coach Donovan Nemetchek states, “Hailey always plays with a smile on her face, she is very competitive and has a fantastic fair play attitude. She gives a 110% on everything she does, school, extra-curricular and rodeo”.
This grade 11 student maintains an average of 88%, and also competes in volleyball, basketball, and badminton.

Tayo Dimeji of the R.D. Parker Trojans basketball team in Thompson is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’7” power forward led her team to a second place finish in the St. John’s Ravenscourt Tournament. She averaged 15 points and 17 rebounds per game and was selected to the tournament all-star team. Coach Sara Gillis states, “Tayo is an exceptional athlete who is extremely coachable and always gives 100%. Her biggest strength is rebounding. She is only 5’7” but she plays like she is six feet tall. I feel sorry for the other team when they are up against Tayo on the boards, she plays with such tenacity, she is exciting to watch. It is a pleasure to coach her”.

Chad Wallack of the Gabrielle Roy Les Roy volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’0” setter led his team to the Zone 13 championship and a bronze medal at the “AA” Provincial Volleyball Championships, where he was named an All-Star. Coach Dalain Brodeur states, “Chad is one of the most polite players and 100% a team player. He is a strong vocal presence for us on the court, in practices, and during games. He knows how to encourage teammates and make positive comments. His teammates all respect his dedication to the sport”.

Connor Vrooman of Baldur who plays for the Glenboro/Carberry/Baldur Wildcats hockey team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’0” center and his team played 5 games in 8 nights this past week winning all five. During this stretch Vrooman had 4 goals, 16 assists, and was a +11, while also winning 67% of his face-offs. Coach Corey Forbes states, “Connor is a team leader on and off the ice. Great kid, with a fantastic work ethic on the ice”.
This grade 12 student maintains an average of 70%, and also competes in cross country, track & field, baseball, and badminton.

Arnold Cook of the Mel Johnson Eagles volleyball team in Wabowden is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’9” setter led his team to victory at the Grand Rapids tournament and the Zone 11 finals, qualifying the team for the “A” Provincial Volleyball Championships in Pilot Mound. During provincials he earned player of the game honours. Coach Brenda Tozer states, “Arnold is dedicated to school and sports and is a person who has accepted and performed well as a leader in and out of the class and on and off of the court. No matter what the adversity they hit this year he kept the team going”.
In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 80%, while also competing in basketball and badminton.

Amy-Lyn Nohr of the Rivers Rams volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’4” setter led her team to a bronze medal at the “A” girls Provincial Volleyball Championships. She was named a game star and selected to the Championship All-Star team for her efforts at the Provincial Championships. Coach Mike Klassen states, “Amy-Lyn has worked extremely hard to achieve success on the court and has earned the respect of her teammates, fellow competitors, and coaches. Attending MHSAA Provincial Championships in all four years of her high school career, Amy-Lyn has been a cornerstone in the female volleyball program at Rivers Collegiate. Her dedication to her various sports teams and personal skill development has awarded her with many accolades. She has become a role model for younger athletes to look up to in our school. A quiet leader in the dressing room, Amy-Lyn leads by example and uses her unpretentious enthusiasm to motivate teammates on the court”.

Jasmine Lafournaise of the Major Pratt Trojans volleyball team from Russell is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’10” middle captained her team to 6 tournament finals winning two of them, the Rivers invitational and Beef & Barley tournament in Russell. She also led her team to a silver medal at the Provincial “AA” Girls Volleyball Championship in Teulon, where she was named a Provincial All-Star and earned player of the game honours in their match against Souris. Coach Cheri Totte states, “Jasmine has embraced her role as the captain and stepped up her level of play with each game. She leads our team in blocking and is a favorite target for our setter as she is one of the team’s most consistent hitters”.

Brooke Huculak of the Elton Sabres volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’10” left side led her team to the final of four tournaments this year, earning all-star recognition at the Vincent Massey Classic tournament. She leads the team in kills, attack percentage, passing percentage, and digs. She was also instrumental in the Sabres winning the Zone 7 Championship, qualifying them for provincials and a chance to repeat as Provincial Champions. Coach Jeff Maxwell states, “Brooke has been a great volleyball player since she entered our school. This year she has taken her game to a new level. She is using a number of different shots to score and she is our best defender. Brooke’s greatest strength is her ability to elevate her performance in big games.”

Trent Hill of the Rorketon Rockets volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’11” setter led his team to the Zone 8 championship along with four tournaments victories at the Gilbert Plains, St. Jean, Swan River and Rorketon tournaments. Coach Dave Sigvaldason states, “Trent leads by example on the court as he demonstrates hard work and intensity at all times. He is the type of player that would make any sacrifice for the success of the team. Trent is a well respected teammate because of his hard work and dedication to the team”.

Kieran Enns of the Mennonite Collegiate Blues volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’6” middle has led his team to victory at the St. James, Mennonite Collegiate and Elton tournaments. He leads his teams in kills and blocks. Coach Bernie Rempel states, “Kieran is a quiet individual who lets his play do the talking. Always with a positive attitude, Kieran leads his team with both his frontcourt and backcourt play. He is one of the best all-around players in the province.”

Sarah Gobin of the St. Claude Olympiens volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’7” left side has been a force for the Olympiens, leading them to victory at the Treherne and MacGregor tournaments and 3rd place at the Portage tournament, where she was selected as an all-star. Coach Courtney DeSpiegelaere states, “Sarah is a natural leader. She works hard and pushes her teammates to step it up at every practice. Her passion for the sport is contagious and many of her teammates look up to her. Sarah hits the ball hard, passes very well and has a nice jump serve.”

Michael Fochtberger of the Garden Valley Zodiacs soccer team in Winkler is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’9” midfielder led his team to gold at the Provincial Rural Soccer Championships in Winkler, earning MVP honours. He also led his team to victory earlier in the year at the Stonewall tournament and at the Zone IV Championships. Fochtberger had 13 goals in 19 games this season. Coach Lorne Warkentine states, “Michael is the quite leader of the team who has patiently helped the coaching staff draw out the best from his teammates throughout the season. This talented athlete is very humble and a pleasure to coach.”

Breanne Sytnyk of the Shoal Lake Sharks volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’0” middle has led her team to three tournament victories this year at the Grandview, Glenboro, and Rocanville (Saskatchewan) tournaments. She is averaging 8 kills and two service aces a game. Coach Scott Martin states, “Breanne is a very coachable athlete who works hard each practice to become a better player. As co-captain she is a stabilizing force on the floor for our younger players during games. She exhibits a real joy for the game that keeps our team energized and focused.”

This 5’3” left side has led her team to the finals of two tournaments. Winning the Wawanesa tournament and ending up a finalist at the Glenboro tournament. Coach Chris Obach states, “Jillian is a very coachable and hard working individual who teammates look to for strong leadership both on and off the court. The reasons for her success as an athlete, in school, and in life are due to her willingness to learn and her unparalleled work ethic.”

Blake Small of the Treherne Tigers volleyball team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 6’1” left side has had strong start to the volleyball season leading the Tigers to two tournament titles at the Treherne and Elm Creek tournaments. He earned MVP honours for his efforts at the Elm Creek tournament. Coach Darrel Van Den Bussche states, “Blake has become the true leader of the team. He has organized extra morning practices and even instigated and organized a volleyball clinic held at Treherne in August. His will to win is contagious and has the Treherne Tigers excited to compete in this year’s volleyball season.”

Ainslie McConkey of the Stonewall Rams soccer team is this week’s Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
This 5’5” goalie has captained her team to two tournament victories this year at the Winkler and Stonewall tournaments. She has yet to allow a goal in tournament play earning 6 shut outs so far. Coach Charlie Cooke states, “Ainslie has a calming presence about her. We have a number of new players this season, and players playing new positions, and she directs the defence so she can make the save.”
