Ashley Voth of the St. Mary’s Academy Flames girls Volleyball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Voth stands at 6”2’ and plays the position of middle. She led her Flames to first place at the Daniel McIntyre volleyball tournament last weekend, where she was named MVP. She has also earned all-star awards at two other tournaments, as well as leading her team in kill percentage. “Ashley is the complete package, she is not only a phenomenal attacker, but also an incredibly strong blocker, server, passer and defender,” exclaims Coach Christine Rewniak of her team captain, “she works extremely hard, has a very positive attitude and as our team captain is also an exemplary leader.”

This grade 12 student maintains an 84% academic average and also participates in Cross Country Running, badminton and track and field.

Michael Riggs of the Transcona Titans boys Volleyball team is this week's Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.


This grade 12 left side hitter stands at 6'1" and has earned all star honors in the U of Manitoba and the Seven Oaks tournaments. Coach Roger Labossiere says the following of his co-captain, "Michael has had an excellent start to this volleyball season with passing and strong attacking skills, which have made him very consistent. Statistically he leads his team in kill efficiency and passing."

Riggs has an 80% academic average and also competes for the basketball team.

Laura Tapley of the College Beliveau Barracudas girls Volleyball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

“Laura has an incredible drive to better herself in all areas of the game,” declares Coach Gilles Mousseau, “She is also the consummate team player by supporting and encouraging her teammates, simply a great person to coach!” Tapley stands at 5’10” and plays the position of middle hitter. Last weekend, she led her Barracudas to tournament championship in Portage, where she was named as the MVP.

This grade 11 athlete maintains a 90+ academic average, participates in cross country running and basketball. Last year she was named as the school’s student of the year for Senior 2’s.

Wednesday, June 15

Krista Stepa of the Vincent Massey Trojans girls Track and Field team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Stepa just competed in the McDonald’s High School Track and Field Championships where she won gold medals in the 1500m at 4:57.58, the 3000m at 11:07.33 and the 4 X 400m relay. She also took home a silver in the 800m with a time of 2:21.35. At her zone conference championship, she took gold in all of her events. “Krista absolutely shines academically, athletically, and as a citizen,” states Coach Joanne Goodwin, “she is not afraid of hard work. She shows remarkable dedication and perseverance in her training.”

In her grade 12 year, she maintains a 94% academic average and also competes in cross country running.

Ashley Machut-Johnston of the Glenlawn Lions girls soccer team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 athlete led her team to a silver medal finish at last weekend’s Provincial High School Urban Soccer Championships. Machut-Johnston is the assistant captain of the Lions and plays the position of defence. “Ashley is a fierce competitor and a fierce leader on the field,” says Coach Russ Harder, “she’s very strong physically and unbeatable on defence.”

Machut-Johnston also competes in Rugby and Basketball.

Dana Baker of the Sisler Spartans girls track and field team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

In her grade 12 year, Baker broke the existing 80m hurdle record at 12.44 seconds for a gold medal. She also finished first place in the 400m and anchored the 4x100m to another top spot. She capped off her medal count with a bronze medal in the javelin. “Dana has the potential to become a great multiple event athlete in the future,” quotes Coach John Iwanski.

Baker averages 80% in school and also competes for the Spartan’s soccer team.

Steven Koester of the College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens boys handball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Koester has led his Olympiens as the team captain into the second round of provincial high school handball play. He is the number two scorer on the team and is averaging approximately 6 goals per game. “Steven is a player who is very passionate about the game and a good kid to coach. He is loved by his teammates.” says Coach Chris Kaufman. In his grade 12 year, he plays both positions of wing and back and his team presently has a record of 10-1.

Koester maintains an 82% academic average in his studies and also played on the school’s championship volleyball team.

Ben Fultz of the Vincent Massey Trojans badminton team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

In his grade 11 year, Fultz took home the gold medal in boys singles at last weekend’s Provincial High School Badminton Championships in Portage la Prairie. “Ben is one of the most respectful and nice student athletes I have ever worked with”, says his Physical Education teacher, Stacy Yuel, “on the court he is a great leader with his skill and sportsmanship”. At his zone 3 championships, he also captured gold in singles play.

Fultz maintains a 96% academic average in his studies while competing in volleyball, basketball and track and field.

Quinn Rumore of the Maples Marauders badminton team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Rumore won the silver medal in girls singles at the Junior Varsity invitational provincial badminton tournament last weekend in Carman. Her points helped her Marauders to win the aggregate title. During the regular badminton season, this girls singles competitor won medals in Gimli, Louis Riel and Seven Oaks tournaments. This past October, Quinn took bronze in the Cross Country Running provincials in the senior girls category. “Quinn is a multi-talented athlete with tremendous fitness and competitive drive. She is always willing to help her team any way she can,” quotes Coach Rae Leaden.

Rumore maintains a 90% academic average in her studies and also competes in volleyball, basketball, soccer and track and field.

Alycia Smith of the College Louis Riel Voyageurs badminton team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Smith, and her girls doubles partner Catherine Fiola, went undefeated in their regular conference schedule and also captured gold at the Gimli and Louis Riel tournaments. “Alycia is the hardest working athlete on our team,” quotes Coach Robert Stanners, “Her game has improved steadily throughout the season and she is committed to our team.”

This grade 12 athlete has a 75% academic average and coaches junior high badminton and volleyball. She also competed on the varsity girls volleyball team.

Ghislaine Bohemier of the College Louis Riel Voyageurs badminton team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Bohemier and her partner Mathiew Ledorze won the mixed doubles event at the Brandon tournament this past weekend. Last year, she was also a zone 2 champion where she finished third in the provincials. “Ghislaine is a calm performer under pressure. She analyzes the skills she needs to develop and performs them well in game situations,” quotes Coach Robert Stanners, “She contributes a lot to our team morale.”

Chislaine has an 86% academic average and also coaches junior high badminton. This grade 12 athlete also competes in volleyball and will competing in this summer’s Francophone Games in Winnipeg.

Marc Martin of the Glenlawn Lions boys basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Martin has received numerous all stars throughout the year and he scored 34 points and 13 rebounds in the provincial quarter final to allow his Lions to advance to the Final Four. The Lions lost in the “AAAA” Provincial semi final to the eventual champions, College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens. This grade 12 forward stands at 6’2” but has been averaging 13 rebounds and late in the season. “Marc has been asked to do different things for us throughout the year and he has responded to the chamllenges, one of those areas he shines in is rebounding,” quotes Coach Minich Nowrang of his Co-captain.

Martin also competes in track and field while maintaining an 81% academic average. As well, Martin sings in his church’s choir and regularly serves Mass.

Andrea Weessies of the Immanuel Christian Falcons girl’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the week.

Weessies, a 5’8” guard/forward led her team to an undefeated regular season by going a perfect 10-0. This grade 12 student was also a huge reason that the Falcons won a tournament in Killarney earlier this season. Weessies and her teammates will also be participating in this weekends “AA” provincials in Ste.Anne, representing Zone 12. “Andrea has shown her ability to encourage her teammates. She has filled in whatever position required; moving from her natural forward position to guard, to replace an injured player. She works hard in practice, trying to improve her skills at every opportunity”, says Coach Shawna Gortemaker.

Weessies, along with being the co-captain of the basketball team, was captain of the volleyball team as well. Weessies, is involved in the schools soccer and track teams. Off the court, Weessies is Student Council President and maintains an 87% academic average.

Stephane Phaneuf of the St.Paul’s Crusaders hockey team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the week.

This grade 12 student led the WHSHL in scoring this season with 63 points. Phaneuf a 5’10 left-winger also led the Crusaders to the WHSHL championship leading the way by putting up 16 points in 5 games. In the 2nd game of their semi-final series versus Oak Park Phaneuf registered 3 goals and 4 assists in a 7-2 victory. “Stephane is a tremendous leader and an unbelievable player. He continuously works hard and has an uncanny scoring touch. He is a fiery, competitive nature, yet is very humble with all of his success,” notes Coach Andrew Harder.

Off the ice, Phaneuf is involved in the community as a Christian service volunteer and maintains an 80% average in the classroom.

Jon Boville of the Linden Christian Wings boy’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the week.

Boville, a 6’0” guard, recently led the Wings to a tournament victory at the Swan River Kinsmen Tip-off. On top of leading his team to victory, this grade 12 student was also named MVP of the tournament. “Johnny is a very valuable player, who brings intensity and determination to every game. With his amazing quickness he is able to lock down an opponent on defence or break a game wide open on offence,” states Coach Nick Janzen.

Boville is also involved in volleyball, badminton and track. He helps coach the schools grade 7/8 girl’s basketball teams, and officiates basketball in the community. Boville maintains a B average in the classroom.

Brad Naron of the Garden City Fighting Gophers boy’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the week.

Naron is a grade 12 student, who has been averaging 21 points and 5 steals per game. This 6’0” guard has been selected a tournament all-star on two occasions this season, at the Miles MacDonell tournament and this past weekend at the St.Vital event. “Brad is a great shooter, he is extremely quick and has great anticipation on defence. He leads by example and is always positive with his teammates,” notes Coach Phil Penner.

When he’s not playing basketball, Naron participates in the schools volleyball and track programs. Naron is also a member of one of our provinces provincial youth soccer teams. In the classroom, he maintains a 70% academic average.

Sarah Reilly of the Dakota Lancers girl’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the week.

Reilly, a 5’11” shooting guard has been averaging 20 points, 17 rebounds and 5 assists per game this season. Reilly, a grade 12 student recently led her team to an upset victory over the #2 ranked Glenlawn Lions. “Sarah is the consummate team leader, she is always putting in extra time at improving her game. Our team depends on Sarah to be a scorer, playmaker and rebounder,” states Coach Ray Houssin.

Off the court, Reilly volunteers at the South Winnipeg YMCA, teaching basketball and is a member of the schools “Black and Gold Society”. Reilly maintains an 85% academic average.

Laura Churley of the Vincent Massey Trojans girl's basketball team in
Winnipeg is this week's Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the week.

Churley, a grade 12 student, led her team this past weekend to the championship at the Maple Leaf Classic, in Brandon. Including the Leadership award she received this weekend, this 6'0" post has also won the Players Choice award at the John Taylor tournament and was named a tournament all-star at the Pembina Trails event. "Laura by far is the most positive leader on and off the court. That combined with her amazing work ethic are a big reason why she is our team captain," says Coach Stacy Yuel.

Churley maintains an 87% academic average.

Ashley Morris of the John Taylor Pipers girl’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter High School Athlete of the week.

Morris is a 5’5” point guard who has been averaging 18.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4 steals and 3.9 assists per game this season. This grade 12 student, in her second season as team captain has scored in double figures in all 18 games she has played. “There is not a easier player to coach in the province. She is the hardest working player on the floor in every practice and game. Other coaches continually approach us after games and comment, not only about her talents on the court, but also about her tremendous work ethic,” says Coach Susie Laping.

Morris maintains an 85% academic average, while also participating in volleyball, badminton, cross-country and handball. Off the court she is involved in student council, peer tutoring and is on the schools honour roll.

James Mcgill of the Silver Heights Huskies boy’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

Mcgill is a 6’0” guard who has been averaging 19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists per game. This grade 12 athlete is the team captain and has led the Huskies into the number eight position in the MHSAA top ten rankings and a big reason that they’ve won 6 straight. “James is a great leader on and off the court. He is an outstanding player at both ends of the floor and contributes in all aspects of the game,” states coach Kirby Schepp.

James maintains an 80% average and also plays on the volleyball team.

Kait Flett of the Miles MacDonell Buckeyes girl’s basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the week.

Kait is a grade 12 student who has been named MVP at both the Garden Valley and Miles Macdonell tournaments, as well as earning all-star status at the Pembina Trails event. This 5’9” guard who is also captain of the team, has averaged 26 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals per game. “Kait has all the tools to be a great player. She is a terrific leader on and off the court and has a desire to be successful,” states Coach Chris Chartier.

Flett maintains an 80% average, while participating in volleyball and cross-country.

Kyle Backlund of the St.Norbert Celtics boy’s varsity basketball team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the week.

Backlund is a 6’7” post who has been averaging 25 points and 14 rebounds per game. This past weekend, the grade 12 student led his team to the championship at the Portage Collegiate Tournament, where they posted a record of 4-0. He has also been selected player of the game in 5 out of the 9 games the Celtics have played. “Kyle has really come into his own this year and is a true force inside. Kyle dominates the rebounding with authority,” says Coach Raffael Borelli.

Kyle also played on the volleyball team and is a participant in the student leadership program at St.Norbert Collegiate, while maintaining a 60% average.

Joe Mulvenna of the Shaftesbury Titans boys hockey team is this week’s Pacesetter Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This grade 12 centre, stands at 5’10” and weighs 175 lbs. He has led his team to an 11-3 record in the Coca Cola division, and leads the division with 19 goals and 15 assists. “Joe is our captain and he leads the team through hard work on the ice. He is a quiet individual that is turning heads, not just in high school hockey but in other leagues as well,” quotes Coach Eugene Kaminsky.

Mulvenna has a 75% academic average.
