Mikayla Ritchot of the Centre Scolaire Léo-Rémillard Track & Field team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’6” track athlete finished 4th in the 400M and 800M events at the Milk Provincial Track & Field Champions, posting a personal best in the 400M of 1:02.10.  This is the highest finish ever for an athlete in school history at the provincials.  Coach Alphonse Bernard states, “With strong support from her parents, Mikayla has shown a lot of discipline, dedication and organization in fitting her training for her track specialties while being a key player with her volleyball, basketball and soccer teams.”

In her grade 9 year she maintains an academic average of 90%, while also participating in cross-country, volleyball, basketball, and soccer.

Mathieu Haiart of the St. John’s Ravenscourt Eagles Soccer team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’2” keeper allowed only four goals in three play-off games to help the Eagles win the Zone 2 soccer championship. That was followed up with by helping lead his varsity rugby team to the city championship. Coach Ray Grynol states, “At 6’2” 240lbs, Mathieu is an opposing figure, and while he can physically beat you up in contact and collision sports, he does so in a jovial way. At the end of games, he shares a smile and extends a hand to opposing players and often begins a friendship.”

In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 86%, while also participating in basketball, track & field, and rugby.

Melissa Kitching of the Springfield Sabres track & field team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’6” track athlete won the Kildonan Peguis Athletic Conference (KPAC) Championship in the 200m and 400m events.  In doing so she tied the KPAC record in the 200m with a time of 24.9 seconds and broke the 33 year old KPAC record in the 400m with a time of 57.4 seconds. Coach Wayne Gluting states, “Melissa trains daily, she is very dedicated to her sport and she knows the kind of hard work it takes to succeed. All her hard work has provided her with a scholarship to a Division 1 track program next year.”

In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 90%.

Emilie Ford of the Lord Selkirk Royals track & field team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’8” track athlete won the 400m & 800m events at the Royal Rumble Meet in times of   1:07.02 and 2:41.56 respectively. Coach Scott Gurney states, “Emilie is one of the hardest working most dedicated athletes on the Track team. Her positive, enthusiastic, upbeat attitude makes her a wonderful team leader and supportive teammate.”

In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 86%, while also participating in cross-country.

Nick Doyle of the Vincent Massey soccer team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

He has 14 goals on the season, with 5 of them coming at the St. John's Ravenscourt tournament where he lead his team to victory and earned MVP honours.  Coach  John Mackinnon states "Nick does not quit and can always be counted on to give it his all until the game is over. Countless times he has provided big goals, turn the game around goals, and passes that result in goals, if he gets bogged down. A great competitor, always optimistic, despite weather conditions or the quality of the opposition, Nick is there and good to go."

In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 90%, while also participating in hockey and lacrosse.

Tia Coulter of the Crocus Plains Plainsmen basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’ post averaged 25.7 points, 5 blocks, 5 assists, 6 steals, and 13 rebounds per game this season.  She lead the team to a final four appearance where she was selected a provincial all-star.  Coach Barb Coulter states, “Tia has been on the Honor Roll for 4 years straight, she plays a variety of sports, is active in a number of charitable events, while also finding time to coach younger basketball enthusiasts.  She is a tremendous role model for our student athletes and we know she will move onto a tremendous post-secondary career.”

In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 91%, while also participating in volleyball, soccer, hockey and golf

Jessica Schmidtke of the River East Kodiaks badminton team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’6” girls singles player, recently won first place at the Maples Badminton Tournament.  Coach Jason Athayde states, “Jessica always has a calm demeanor on court.  She exhibits great sportsmanship and always rallies the points.”

In her grade 11 year she maintains an academic average of 90%.

Zach Peltz of the Vincent Massey Trojans badminton team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’9” boys doubles player, along with partner Kieran Hendrickson-Gracie, won the WWAC Badminton Championship and Maples tournament, leading the Vincent Massey badminton team to the team aggregate title in both tournaments this past weekend.  Coach Martin Balcaen states, “Zach leads our team by example with his tremendous focus, maturity, positive attitude, and commitment to excellence.  These characteristics have led him to a very successful season thus far.”

In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 86%, while also participating in soccer.

Quentin Raval of the College Louis Riel Voyageurs badminton team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

Raval, a mixed doubles player won the College Louis Riel and Gimli badminton tournaments this season.  Coach Robert Stanners states, "Quentin is a committed, analytical, and focused athlete who works well with either his partner or his coaches. He has proven to be a pressure player on a number of occasions and we look forward to his participation in the upcoming championships.

In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 88%, while also participating in volleyball, basketball, golf, curling and soccer.

Chad Lacap of the Maples Marauders badminton team is this week’s Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School athlete of the week. 

Lacap placed 2nd in boys single, at his first event of the season, the College Louis Riel badminton tournament.  Coach Peter Serrette states, “Chad has been a strong member of our badminton program for the past three years in men's singles. Chad is an exceptional athlete, who has excelled at tennis, volleyball and football. Chad is on the Honor Roll here at Maples, and plans on attending university in the fall.”

In his grade 12 year he also participates for the school in football, volleyball, and basketball.

Stanley Bateman of the Nelson McIntyre Wolverines basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’11” guard led his team to a 26-8 season and tournament victories at the St. James Classic, Sanford Big Cat and Mac Attack tournaments.  He earned MVP honours at all three tournaments. Over the season he averaged 27.5 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists per game. Coach David Day states, “Stan has been playing varsity basketball for three years. He continues to push himself and the others around him to improve. He knows the system so well he is like a second coach in practice and on the court during the game.”

In his grade 11 year he maintains an academic average of 75%.

Elliott Taylor of the Oak Park Raiders basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’0” point guard led his Raiders team to their second consecutive Milk AAAA Basketball Championships.  He was the team’s leading scorer in the final and earned championship MVP honours. Coach Jon Lundgren states, “Elliott leads by example every game and practice”.

In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 70%, while also participating in football

Desmond O’Dell of the Lord Selkirk Royals basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School athlete of the week.  

This 6’3” wing was an all-star at the BSSI and Transcona Optimist tournaments. He averages 20 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals per game. Coach Dean Goodbrandson states, “Des is an exceptional natural athlete who came to Selkirk two years ago with limited basketball experience. His hard work and enthusiasm for the game has contributed to his rapid improvement and recent success. He may be under the radar of many college scouts, but his abilities have certainly been noticed by teams in the KPAC conference.”

In his grade 12 year he also participates in track & field and soccer.

Neesha Esmail of the River East Kodiaks basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’7” point guard is averaging 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals per game.  She has received player of the game recognition in 3 tournaments this year and has been instrumental in the Kodiaks advancement to the KPAC finals.  Coach Kristen Asmundson states, “Neesha is a very competitive basketball player.  She has a lot of responsibility as point guard of our team and has helped lead the Kodiaks to 3 tournament championships this year and big wins over highly ranked Crocus Plains and Oak Park.”

In her grade 12 year she is maintaining an academic average of 72%

Brittany Rosenfelt of the Oak Park Raiders basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’11” forward is currently averaging 20 points and 14 rebounds per game.  She has helped lead her team to victory at the Wesmen Classic and Pembina trails tournaments, as well as the final of the Piper Classic and Raider Invitational.  She was named tournament all-star at the Wesmen, Piper, Raiders and Campbell tournaments.  Coach Murray Brown states, “Brittany has had a great season after missing almost all of last season due to injury. She works hard every practice to set the tone for the team.  She is an excellent 3-point shooter and is extremely strong playing in the post.  Brittany also takes on the role of being the defensive leader of the team.”

In her grade 12 year she is maintaining an academic average of 80%.

Dror Liebenthal of the St. John’s Ravenscourt Eagles basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’3” guard was selected the MVP in both the SJR River City Shoot-out and Swan Valley Kinsmen tournament where he led his team to consecutive tournament victories.  He is averaging 28 points and 6 rebounds per game and is leading the team in scoring. Coach Darren Johnson states, “Dror has always had great shooting range and excellent body control when attacking the basket.  This season, he has worked hard to improve the defensive side of his game and as a result has become a better all-round player.”

In his grade 12 year he is maintaining an academic average of 99.5% and also competes in track & field.

Ivan Griffiths of the Kildonan East Reivers basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’11” guard led his team to victory at the Kildonan East Tip-Off, where he was named MVP, and the Lord Selkirk Tournaments.  He is averaging 23 points per game, 9 rebounds and 7 assists.  Coach Jeremy Martin states, “Ivan is a Great leader who has great skills and athletic ability.  He can easily change the course of the game with those abilities.  He has led his team to a 23 - 7 record so far this season and a top 10 ranking.”

In his grade 11 year he is maintaining an academic average of 80%.

Sam Guertin of the St. Paul’s Crusaders hockey team is this week’s Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’1” right wing led his team to their second consecutive win at the Tournament of Champions.  He was the tournaments leading scorer, earning him tournament MVP honours. Coach Andrew Harder states, “Sam is a great leader, not only for our hockey team, but as the student body President as well.  He is a well rounded player, works extremely hard and is very coachable.”

In his grade 12 year he is maintaining an academic average of 85%.

Levi Bergen of the Westgate Wings basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’5” post and captain for the Wings is averaging 23.5 points per game, is the team’s leading rebounder and team leader in foul shooting percentage at 75%.  He was MVP at the Swan Valley Tournament and named to the all-star team at the Edward Schreyer, St. James and Sanford tournaments.  Coach Karl Wiebe states, “Levi is a very talented basketball player.  He shoots well both outside and inside as a post.  He leads by example, both physically and emotionally, and is unflappable in tough situations.  He inevitably commands attention from the opposition through his strong and consistent play.”

In his grade 12 year he is maintaining an academic average of 73%

Tyler McGurry of the Springfield Sabres hockey team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’1” forward for the Sabres lead his team to victory at the Motor City Invitational in Detroit.  He was named to the WHSHL Elite team and currently has 6 goals and 8 assists for 14 points in 17 games this season. Coach Severyn Wojcik states, “Tyler is a hard working individual who loves the game of hockey as he is always the first player on the ice for practice. Tyler is a quiet leader that is well respected by his fellow teammates and coaches and is an integral part of our team.”

Kyle Queijo of the Daniel McIntyre Maroons basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’11” guard and captain for the Maroons is averaging 25 points per game and 8 assists.  At the BSSI tournament in Brandon he was awarded a tournament all-star. Coach Carey Lasuik states, “Kyle’s maturity level this year has not only improved his court play, but it has also allowed him to be a better person in school and with his teammates.  Kyle is one of those rare players that can see the game develop before it happens.  His court knowledge and ability to see the floor benefits the entire team.”

In his grade 12 year he is maintaining an academic average of 72%.

Brittany Koop of the River East Kodiaks basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’11” guard led her team to their first tournament victory of the year at their home tournament.  She scored 20 points in the finals and earned MVP honours for her efforts.  Coach Kristen Asmundson states, “Brittany is off to a great start in her grade 12 year.  She has shown strong leadership, hard work and versatility, playing 3 different positions very well for the Kodiaks so far.”

Jamieson Taylor of the Shaftesbury Titans hockey team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’0” goalie has backstopped the Titans to eight wins this season.  In a five game span he allowed only two goals posting a 0.8 GAA, and recording one shut-out.  Coach Eugene Kaminsky states, “Jamieson is a quiet leader who has the respect of his teammates for his ability to compete for every puck that is played around his net.  Shaftesbury has arisen from a school which had two victories last year to 8 in 10 games, with much of that success being attributed to Jamieson.  His talent has forced his own teammates to become better players during practice.”

In his grade 12 year he is maintaining an academic average of 65%.

Daniel Popel of the St. Paul’s Crusaders hockey team is this week’s Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’1” defenseman for the crusaders led his team to victory at an invitational tournament in Anaheim, California.  He scored the winning goal in the championship final in overtime and was named the tournament MVP.  Coach Andrew Harder states, “Daniel has a great attitude and always gives 100% effort.  He is a physical force on the ice, and is a gifted offensive minded defenseman”.

In his grade 12 year he is maintaining an academic average of 80%.

Josh Simard of the Springs Christian Academy Eagles volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’0 setter led his team to Springs Christian Academy’s first ever Provincial Championship at the ‘AAA’ Volleyball Provincials held in Virden this past weekend.  He was also recognized for his efforts by being named the Provincial MVP.  Coach Richard Wiebe states, “Josh was willing to do whatever it took for our team to be successful. Whether that meant he was left side for us, right side for us, or a setter for us, Josh was willing to ignore personal glory/stats to ensure our team had the best chance of victory. Josh’s decision making makes him a fantastic setter.  He ran our offense to perfection at this year’s ‘AAA’ provincial championship. He also motivates our team and was a calming influence for the rest of the guys on the team”.

In his grade 12 year he is maintaining an academic average of 80% and also participates in basketball.

Sarah Wiebe of the Westgate Mennonite Collegiate volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’8” left side is team captain and leads her team on and off the court. She was named MVP of the Stonewall tournament and has helped lead her team to a Top 10 ranking.  “Sarah is a consistent player on the court and helps to motivate the team to elevate their play.  She always strives to better her play”, says Jen How.

In her grade 11 year she maintains an academic average of 81% while also participating in Basketball and Soccer

Christina Souza of the Vincent Massey Trojans volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.

This 5’9” setter led her team to a 2nd place finish in the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference and was named a divisional all-star. Coach Jocelyn Duncan states, “Christina is an incredible athlete who demands a lot of herself and her teammates. She has a naturally competitive attitude that shines in her obvious desire to play”.

Dylan Keats of the College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’0” captain and setter for the Olympiens led his team to top 5 finishes at the U of M and St. Vital Invitational tournaments and to the tournament championship at the Vincent Massey Showdown in Brandon.  He was recognized for his efforts at the Vincent Massey Showdown by being named the tournament MVP. Coach Cam Johnson states, “Dylan is a quite leader who has steadily improved year to year and certainly throughout this season to date.”

In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 80%, while also participating in hockey.

Danika Picklyk of the St. Mary’s Academy Flames volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’11” left side and captain for the Flames led her team to the St. Vital Tournament Championship, where she was named tournament MVP.  A week earlier at St. Mary’s home tournament she was named a tournament all-star on route to leading her team to a second place finish.  Coach Christine Rewniak states, “Danika is the complete player. She is not only a dominate force offensively, but also passes and defends extremely well. She has a great attitude and a very strong work ethic. As team captain, she leads by example and is always trying to improve her game.”

In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 89%.

Taylor Pischke of the Fort Richmond Centurions volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’1” left side and captain for the Centurions has led the team to victory at the Boston Pizza Big Spike Invitational and Springfield tournaments.  In addition, she also helped her team to a third place finish at the West Winnipeg Invitational.  She leads her team statistically in all categories and has an attacking average of 72%.  Coach Kristin Shiach states, "Taylor is an extremely skilled volleyball player. She is one of the most gifted athletes I have ever seen for her age group. Her ability to use many different shots when attacking is one of her best qualities as a volleyball player. She also had a great Cross Country season this year at FRC. She has a very bright future ahead of her!"

In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 94%. She also competes in basketball, cross country and track & field

Kaitlyn Corbin of the Sturgeon Heights Huskies volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’6” left side hitter has been an integral part in the Huskies success this season.  She helped lead her team to a tournament victory at the Seven Oaks tournament and to the tournament finals at the Vincent Massey tournament in Brandon.  She led the team in kills at both tournaments, and in digs at the Vincent Massey tournament.  Coach Peter Roadley states, “She leads by example, never complains and will work as hard as anyone in practice.  A natural leader!”

In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 83%.

Carly Vanderhooft of the Miles MacDonell Buckeyes volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 5’9” setter led her team to victory at the Royal Rumble tournament held in Selkirk.  Coach Nadia Melon states, “She is a very consistent player, who brings leadership and intensity to every game.  Very athletic and is able to stay calm under pressure situations, two great qualities to have in a setter.”

In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 88%, while also competing in cross country running, basketball and soccer.

Evan Alexander of the St. Paul’s Crusaders volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’2” right side captained his team to the U of M tournament championship with a victory over John Taylor in the finals.  Coach Lloyd Voth states, “Evan works hard every practice, pushing himself and his teammates to improve.  Whether he is on the court or off the court, he provides a positive energy which the team is able to feed off of.”

In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 75%.

Garrett Armstrong of the John Taylor Pipers volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.

This 6’4” right side hitter and captain led his team to a second place finish at the Maples tournament.  He led the Pipers with 45 kills, and 5 stuff blocks in the tournament. Coach Ryan Vermette states, “Garrett is a very technical player. He is able to continually improve his skill set as a volleyball player through advice from his coaches without the fear of failure. As the captain of our team the other players feed off of his natural leadership ability on and off the court.

In his grade 12 year he also participates in badminton and beach volleyball.

Shane DeRooy of the Lord Selkirk Royals volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School athlete of the week. 

This 6’4” left side hitter and co-captain for the Royals led his team to the University of Winnipeg Invitational this past weekend.  He led the team with 51 kills and was named the tournament MVP.  Coach Jim Schreyer states, “Shane is a go to guy for the Royals this year, a natural competitor”.
