Kaitlin
Rempel of the Westgate Wings girls basketball
team is this week's Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School
Athlete of the Week.

This
5'10" wing has averaged 22 points, 10 rebounds
and 4 blocked shots a game over 7 games this season.
As co-captain of the Wings, Rempel led her team to a
third place finish at last weekend's St. John's tournament.
"Kaitlin leads by example and works hard in games
and practices, spending countess hours in the gym on
her own improving her game," states Coach Jennifer
How, "She makes smart decisions and has the ability
to change the game."
Maintaining an 85% academic average, Rempel also competes
in volleyball, is in the concert band and is the treasurer
on the senior student council. |

Michael
Hebert of the Nelson McIntyre Wolverines boys
basketball team is this weeks Home Run Sports Winnipeg
High School Athlete of the Week.
Standing
at 64, Hebert plays in the post/wing position
and led his team to the Tier 2 championship at the Neelin
tournament last weekend. At the tournament, he averaged
20 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 blocks and 21 points per game,
which earned him the tier 2 MVP. Mike is an outstanding
athlete who always works hard to improve his game, including
he is passionate for the game, states Coach Todd Tyler
of his Wolverines assistant captain, his on court
leadership helps his teammates raise their game to another
level.
Hebert
is a grade 12 student athlete, who also competes in intramurals.

Michael
Mallin of the College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens
boys volleyball team is this weeks Home Run Sports
Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.

This
grade 12 power hitter stands at 62 and led
his team to their second consecutive championship at
the recent Boston Pizza AAAA Volleyball
Championships. For his play, he was named the MVP of
the championship. During the regular season, Mallin
earned all-star recognition at the U of Manitoba, St.
Vital and Harry Ainley tournaments. Michael is
a genuine leader in both the physical parts of the game
as well as being a player who knows how to get the best
out of his teammates, Exclaims Coach Cam Johnson.
This Olympiens Captain also leads the team in
almost all the statistical categories as well including
19 kills in the provincial final. |
Mallin
maintains a 75% academic average and also plays on the school
basketball team.

Monica
Chernichan of the College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens girls volleyball
team is this weeks Home Run Sports Winnipeg High
School Athlete of the Week.

This
grade 12 power hitter stands at 60 and
led her team to a silver medal at the Boston Pizza
AAAA Championships last night. During
the regular season, she earned all star honors at
the Harry Ainley tournament. She has an immediate
impact on the game with her strong presence in both
front and back row, explains Coach Ashley Ragoonaden,
Monica loves everything about volleyball from
practices to competitions to most of all the teamwork.
Chernichan
maintains an 86% academic average and is involved
in the schools choir.

Kristen
Hughes of the Linden Christian Wings girls volleyball
team is this weeks Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School
Athlete of the Week.

Hughes
and her Wings are going into this weekends AAA
Volleyball championships in Ashern with the number one
raking. Kristen leads by example and she approaches
every contact as an opportunity to get better and raises
the level of her team with her excellent work ethic
and positive attitude, exclaims Coach Natalie
Reimer Anderson, She is an offensive threat because
of her ability to hit many shots but she truly dominates
as a defensive player and passer. She leads the
team in serve receive, defensive digs and is second
in service aces and kills. Hughes is 510,
and plays the position of left side hitter. |
Only
in her grade 12 year, Hughes maintains a 95% in her studies
and competes in volleyball, basketball, badminton and track
and field. She is actively involved in teaching Sunday school,
sings in the school chamber choir, plays in the school honour
band and has also performs in school musicals.

Jill
Sawatzky of the Lord Selkirk Royals girls volleyball
team is this weeks Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School
Athlete of the Week.

Sawayzky
and her Royals just captured the Kildonan Peguis conference
championships and are the defending provincial champions.
She stands at 60 and is the teams middle
player. In last Thursdays conference championship
match, she led the team with 25 kills. During the regular
season, Sawayzky earned three all star selections and
three MVP awards. Jill is an outstanding volleyball
player who is a dominant attacker and blocker,
exclaims Coach Rick Scott, she is very coachable
and always striving to become better. She respects the
game and competition, and in turn is well respected
by her teammates and fellow players and coaches. |
This
student athlete is only in grade 11 and also competes in
basketball and track and field and maintains an outstanding
95% academic average. She also helps out by scorekeeping
and officiating volleyball.

Ryan
Gilmour of the Kelvin Clippers boys hockey team
is this weeks Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School
Athlete of the Week.

This
Clipper stands at 58 and led the Kelvin
hockey team to their first tournament win in the nine
year history of their team. The tournament was the Huskies
classic and Gilmour led the team in points, including
three short handed goals. Ryan is a good leader
with outstanding speed and always the hardest working
player on the ice, promotes Coach Bruce Sirrell
of his Clippers Assistant Captain.
Gilmour
is a S3 student athlete who also competes in golf
and maintains a 75% academic average.

Kate
Langrell of the Balmoral Hall Blazers girls
volleyball team is this weeks Home Run Sports
Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week.
Langrell
is a S3 student who led her team to a silver medal
at the Western Canadian Independent Schools Tournament
in Saskatchewan on October 15. For her efforts, this
510 middle blocker, who leads the team
in blocking and hitting, was named the MVP. Kate
is a leader and she never uses sports as an excuse
for not having her homework done, says Coach
John Kerr, in my mind she epitomizes the essence
of the true athlete and she uses sport as a way of
finding balance in healthy body to the healthy mind.

Maintaining
a 92% in her academics, Langrell also competes in soccer
and track and field. She volunteers as a grade 8 volleyball
coach, referees middle school sports, competes in
mathematics competitions and is on the reach for the top
team. She is also musically inclined as a member of the
junior band and is working on her grade seven piano.

Chris Mikolowski of the St. Paul's Crusaders boys
volleyball team is this week's Home Run Sports Winnipeg
High School Athlete of the Week.

Mikolowski
leads his team in kill efficiency and blocks, while
leading the Crusaders as co-captain. Standing at 6'6",
he plays the right side position and led his team
to gold at the recent Big Spike volleyball tournament,
where he was named MVP. "Chris has developed
into a real force on the volleyball court and with
his good jumping ability, he is a tremendous blocker
and attacker," exclaims Coach Jeff McMillan,
"he has worked hard to improve his game and has
become a great leader on the court."
In
his grade 12 year, Mikolowski also maintains a 75%
academic average.

Alex
Bell of the Lord Selkirk Royals girls Cross Country
Running team is this weeks Home Run Sports Winnipeg
High School Athlete of the Week.

In
her grade 11 year, Bell took home gold in the senior
girls category in the Provincial High School Cross Country
Running Championships, last Thursday. Her time was 11:38
for the 3kms, which was 21 seconds better than
her nearest competitor. She also finished first in all
three of her KPAC zone meets. Alexs single
minded dedication to her training laid the groundwork
for her successes this season. Her confidence in her
own abilities and a determined mindset made her a tenacious
competitor in all her races. Plus, shes one of
the nicest kids Ive ever coached, remarks
Coach Scott Gurney. |
Bell
maintains a 90+ in her academic average, while competing
in volleyball and water polo. She is also involved in the
schools student council and youth in Philanthropy
committee.
