Casey Schouten of the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 6’5” forward led his team to the Buckeyes Classic Championship, earning MVP honors for his efforts. He is averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per game this season. Coach Jeff Shaddock states, “Casey’s combination of work ethic and athleticism are the reason for his success in both basketball and volleyball. He is one of the most intelligent players on our team. He picks up new material very quickly and is able to make adjustments on the fly. Casey has played a major role in the Buckeyes’ success so far this year”.
In grade 12, he maintains an average of 85% and also competes in volleyball.

Madison Kinzel of the Linden Christian Wings basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 5’9” guard led her team to a first place finish at the St. Norbert and St. John’s Ravenscourt tournaments. She was named the St. Norbert Tournament MVP and has been averaging 12 points and 7 assists per game this season. Coach John Friesen states, “Madison works hard to bring the best out of the team. She enjoys distributing the ball and making everyone a better player. She is a hard worker at practice and a pleasure to coach”.
In grade 12, she maintains an average of 93%.

Andre Arruda-Welch of the Garden City Fighting Gophers basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 6’4” forward is averaging 22 points and 10 rebounds per game. He was named all-star at the BSSI tournament in Brandon, MVP of the Wesmen Classic and player of the game at the BRIT in Saskatoon. The Gophers finished 3rd at both the BSSI and BRIT tournaments while winning the Wesmen Classic. Coach Phil Penner states, “Andre is an outstanding all around player, he can defend, rebound and is an excellent offensive player. He works extremely hard and leads by example. He is well respected by his teammates and is an absolute pleasure to coach”.
In grade 12, he maintains an average of 71%, and also competes in volleyball

Celecia Luckwell of the Glenlawn Lions basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 5’8” guard has led her team to tournament victories at the Pembina Trails and River East tournaments. She averaged 17 points, 9 assists and 3 steals, while being selected MVP at River East and an All-star at Pembina Trails. Coach Bryan Kornberger states, “Celecia’s dedication and leadership skills, combined with her fine play, have helped make her teammates better”.
In grade 12, she maintains an average of 75%, and also competes in rugby and soccer.

Tyree Gordon of the Kildonan East Reivers basketball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 5’10” guard led his team to their first tournament win of the season at the Kildonan East Tip Off. He finished the tournament with 43 points including 5 three pointers in the final and a team high 15 assists in the semi-finals. He also helped the Reivers get off to a 2-0 start in the Kildonan Peguis Athletic Conference. Coach Jeremy Martin states, “Tyree is one of those true point guards that can push the ball up the court, find his teammates in transition and take the outside shot when needed. He will make other people around him better as a result”.
In grade 12, he maintains an average of 85%.

Kevin Falconer of the St. Paul’s Crusaders volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 6’3” left side led his team to the finals of the Boston Pizza “AAAA” Volleyball Championships, earning Provincial All-Star honours for his efforts. Throughout the year he also received recognition as an all-star at the St. Vital Invitational, as a league all-star for the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference, and was named the # 4 Player in the annual Winnipeg Sun Top Ten Poll. Coach Lloyd Voth states, “Kevin is a strong player, who brings his best game to important games. In the finals he had his best hitting and serving game of the year, in our biggest game of the year”.
In his grade 12 year he maintains an academic average of 75%.

Madelyn Mandryk of the St. Mary’s Academy Flames volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 5’8” setter capped off and impressive season by leading her team to win the school’s first ever Boston Pizza “AAAA” Volleyball Provincial Championship. For her efforts she was named the Dairy Farmers of Manitoba Player’s Choice Award recipient and was selected to the championship All-Star team. She was also named the #5 Player in the annual Winnipeg Sun Top Ten Players Poll. Coach Christine Rewniak states, “Madelyn is one of the hardest working players I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. Not only is she a tremendous athlete, but she is also extremely coachable, has a very positive attitude, and is a strong leader. She is a fantastic jump-setter and runs our offence with confidence and consistency. She makes smart decisions and is also a threat at the net with her attacking and blocking abilities”.

Kendra Bommersbach of the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 5’7” left side captained her team to the Kildonan Peguis Athletic Conference Championship and a spot in the Boston Pizza “AAAA” Volleyball Championships, where she led the team to a Final Four appearance. She was named the Boston Pizza Game Star in the semi-finals against Crocus Plains and was selected as a Provincial All-Star. Coach Nadia Melon states. “Kendra is a very athletic individual, who demands the best from herself. She is very coachable and is a natural leader”.
In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 87%, while also competing in Cross-Country.

Kenny Rooney of the College Jeanne Sauvé Olympiens volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 6’5” middle had 25 kills while leading the Olympiens to the South Central Athletic Conference volleyball championship and a spot in the BOSTON PIZZA “AAAA” Volleyball Provincials. Coach Cam Johnson states, “Kenny is co-captain of the team and is one of our most consistent players. This year, Kenny was asked to expand his game by staying on the court as a passing and defensive player as well as anchoring the middle position at the net. As a 6’5” middle he became a consistent passer, a great digger and always a positive and competitive presence on the floor. “

Brendan Thielmann of the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 6’1” left side lead his team to the Kildonan Peguis Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the BOSTON PIZZA AAAA Provincial Volleyball Championships. He has also helped lead his team to tournament victories at the U of M, U of W, Spruce Grove (Alberta), Lord Selkirk and Mennonite Brethren tournaments. Coach Tim Au states, “Brendan has a great attitude and is a leader both on and off the court. He is instrumental to our team’s success because of his work ethic and never say die attitude. Brendan has great all around skills and is a complete player”.

Jeff Bernier of the Linden Christian Wings volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 6’1” left side helped led his team to the championship at the annual Spartan Dig tournament in Brandon. He averaged 8 kills, 2 stuff blocks and 2 services aces per match and was named the tournament MVP. He has also led the Wings to an undefeated record in league play this season. Coach Manfred Glor states, “Jeff leads by example and possesses excellent volleyball acumen. He is able to plan the best attack and helps his teammates to succeed. Jeff has put in a lot of extra time to become the volleyball player that he is today.”

Ben Ryan of the Westgate Wings cross-country team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 5’8” runner led the Westgate Varsity Boys to their 2nd straight Cross Country Championship, while also winning the individual gold for his category. Coach Doug Durksen states, “Ben is a team leader and has helped encourage all of our other athletes. He has helped run practices and helped to organize and run a weekend training camp. He is a role model for our junior high runners and he takes this seriously. Ben is willing to offer guidance based on his triathlon background which has helped team members immensely.”

Erin Teschuk of the St. Mary’s Academy Flames cross-country team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 5’6” runner led her varsity girls cross country team to the provincial title, while also winning gold as the individual overall champion. Coach Demetro Danyluk states, “Erin is an excellent team member, willingly shares her knowledge with our inexperienced runners to help them prepare for races. Has encouraged other St. Mary’s girls to join track and cross country. She is successful because she is very coachable, works on her mechanics and understands the pains and gains of putting out extreme efforts in training and races.”

Michael Bommersbach of the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 5’11” setter has led his team to tournament victories at the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, Spruce Grove (Alberta), and St. Vital tournaments. For his efforts, he was recognized as tournament MVP at this past weekend’s St. Vital Invitational. Coach Tim Au states, “Michael is a leader on our team. While not the loudest athlete, he always leads by example. As a setter, Michael always makes great plays from any type of pass. Michael can be defined as someone who has competitive greatness that all his teammates benefit from.”

This 6’3” middle blocker for the Crusader’s led his team to a 3rd place finish at the U of W tournament, where he was named a tournament all-star. He has also helped his team go undefeated thus far in the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference. Coach Lloyd Voth states, “Jordan is a skilled confident player who brings a positive attitude to the court.”

Turner Johnson of the Springs Christian Academy Eagles volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 6’2” left side has captain his team to two straight tournament victories and a 15-0 start to the season. Coach Richard Wiebe states, “Turner has it all. I knew within 5 minutes from meeting him that he would be our team captain and he has been a fantastic leader for us. Turner is a fantastic passer and defender. There really is no weakness in his game. He is an all around player and in my opinion deserves this week’s athlete of the week award.”

Alicia Ogoms of the St. Mary’s Academy Flames volleyball team is this week’s Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week.
This 6’5” middle was instrumental in St. Mary’s victory at the Crocus Plains tournament. She was the team’s top blocker and server and had a kill percentage of 50%. The flames are also currently undefeated in league play. Coach Christine Rewniak states, “Alicia is a physically gifted athlete who is always striving to improve her game. She is extremely dominant at the net, and has become a more aggressive blocker and attacker. She is our team captain, is composed under pressure, and is a leader both on and off the court.”
In her grade 12 year she maintains an academic average of 82%, while also participating in basketball and soccer.
